Appointments

Yolanda Cooper has been promoted to dean and university librarian for Emory University. Cooper has served as Emory’s university librarian since 2014. Prior to joining Emory, Cooper served as acting dean and university librarian at the University of Miami Libraries. Her background also includes work with research library systems at the University of Virginia and Indiana University-Bloomington.

Andrea Falcone has been appointed dean of the library in the W. Frank Steely Library at Northern Kentucky University.

Jennie Pu has been appointed dean of college libraries at Hudson County Community College.

Claire Stewart is the new dean of University Libraries at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She will also hold a continuous appointment as professor in the libraries. Stewart was the associate university librarian for research and learning at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Prior to working at Minnesota, Stewart held several positions at Northwestern University over a 21-year period, including director of the Center for Scholarly Communication and Digital Curation and head of Digital Collections. She provided leadership, directed projects, and offered services and support in areas that included research data management, digital humanities, and digital publishing. Stewart has written about and given presentations on data management, curation, and preservation in journals, online publications, and at conferences. She is active in the Big Ten Academic Alliance and is chair of the Geoportal Strategic Leadership Group. She has also served on committees and working groups focused on digital library initiatives and data storage. She was also an Association of Research Libraries Leadership Fellow (2016–17).

Tom Walker has been selected as the associate dean of the Wayne State University School of Information Sciences. Walker joins the School of Information Sciences after serving most recently at Long Island University, where he was the interim dean of the libraries and associate dean and director of the Palmer School of Library and Information Science. Walker spent a large part of his career at the School of Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). After gaining tenure and promotion, he left for an opportunity to direct the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Southern Mississippi, but returned to UWM four years later. At UWM, Walker participated in campuswide governance groups and projects related to assessment, curriculum, tenure and promotion, and marketing. Between 2013 and 2016, he was the executive director of the Wisconsin Center for the Book, an affiliate program of the Library of Congress. The author of more than 100 publications ranging from short journal articles about aspects of the history of libraries to longer treatments of topics in knowledge organization, scholarly communication, and historical bibliography. Walker has presented at conferences and workshops in England, Scotland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, China, Kuwait, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Canada.

Shali Zhang was named dean of libraries at Auburn University in February 2019, where she is responsible for the leadership and administration of the University Libraries. Prior to this post, Zhang was dean and professor at the University of Montana (2012–19). Zhang also held leadership positions at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro as assistant dean for Collections and Technical Services (2005–12), Wichita State University Libraries as head of Technical Services Division (1999–2005), and at other institutions.

Erika Bailey has been named data and digital scholarship librarian at the University of Washington-Tacoma.

William E. Baxter has been appointed assistant director of collections at the Smithsonian Libraries.

Rebecca Carlson is now health sciences librarian and liaison to the School of Pharmacy for the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill University Libraries.

Nadia Clifton has been named special collections engagement librarian for the Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill University.

Amanda Clossen has joined the Duquesne University Gumberg Library as the head of teaching and learning.

Lilly Cook has been appointed assistant to the dean in the W. Frank Steely Library at Northern Kentucky University

Christina Cortland is now library software applications developer at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill University.

James Cox has been appointed director of patron services at Hudson County Community College.

L. Blue Dean has joined the University Libraries at the University of North Carolina -Chapel Hill as executive director of library development.

Diane Dias De Fazio has been appointed curator of Rare Books & Book Arts in Special Collections at the University of Iowa Libraries.

Jackie Fleming accepted the visual literacy and resources librarian position with the Indiana University Libraries-Bloomington.

Christine Forbes has been named specialist librarian at the Monmouth University Library.

Hannah Gunderman is the new research data management consultant at the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries.

Sarah Hicks has joined the Duquesne University Gumberg Library as the scholarly communications and systems librarian.

Matt Jansen is now data analysis librarian at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill University Libraries.

Jasmine Kirby has joined the Carnegie Mellon University Qatar Library as instruction and engagement librarian.

Jill Liebisch has been appointed library education advisor/recruiter in the W. Frank Steely Library at Northern Kentucky University.

KT Lowe has been appointed assistant librarian for instruction at Indiana University East.

Ron McColl has been named special collections librarian at West Chester University of Pennsylvania.

Katy Miller is the new student success/textbook affordability librarian at the University of Central Florida Libraries.

Katherine O’Clair has been appointed department head for academic services at Robert E. Kennedy Library at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

Melody Rood has been named the new student success librarian in Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

Aaron Smithers has been appointed special collections research and instruction librarian in the Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill.

Beth South has been appointed assistant librarian for access and technical services and will continue in her role as archivist for Indiana University East.

Lynn Warner has been named instructional services librarian in the W. Frank Steely Library at Northern Kentucky University.

Andrew Weaver is now media preservation librarian at the University of Washington-Seattle.

Sarah Wright is now School of Medicine librarian and clinical team lead in the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill University.

Retirements

Margaret “Meg” Scharf, associate director, Communications, Assessment, and Public Relations, has retired from the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries. Scharf joined the UCF Libraries in 1984, helping to develop the Library Information Network and Exchange (LINE) program. She then moved to the Reference Department, later becoming head, while teaching popular library instruction classes and developing collections for business and hospitality. Scharf was promoted to associate director for Public Services in 1999; she assumed her current role in 2012, reporting to Director Barry Baker. During her nearly 35 years at UCF, Scharf has been an active member of many professional organizations, including ALA, the Florida Library Association, and the State University Libraries, serving on myriad committees and subcommittees. She has presented at such diverse venues as EDUCAUSE Conferences and the Lilly Conference on Higher Education in England. She held the position of regional reporter for the ACRL Newsletter, Florida chapter, and served as editor of Internet Reference Services Quarterly and as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Academic Librarianship. She also served as a member of the Central Florida Memory project, an online repository of images and stories about the area’s history. Within UCF, Scharf served on or chaired numerous committees, including the Advisory Board for the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning and the Quality Enhancement Advisory Plan Committee. She also worked closely with Student Accessibility Services to improve library services for students with disabilities. She was instrumental in redesigning the main floor of the Orlando campus library to include more space for group and independent learning, and in planning InSTALLments, the quick-read newsletter posted inside the library bathrooms.
