Susan A. Matson,assistant professor and assistant cataloging librarian, has been named the 1998 recipient of the Library Affairs Outstanding Faculty Award. She joined the Library Affairs faculty in 1978 as assistant serials librarian. She earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1972 and her MLS in 1977.
Appointments
Millicent “Penny” Abellhas been named acting interim university librarian of the University of California (UC) Berkeley Libraries after having been named university librarian emerita upon retirement from the Yale University Library in January 1995. Prior to her appointment at Yale, Abell served for eight years as university librarian at UC San Diego and in administrative positions at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the University of Washington. She has been active in national library activities: a founding member of the Commission on Preservation and Access and the Digital Preservation Consortium, president of ACRL, chair of the Center for Research Libraries, and an executive committee member of the Research Libraries Group. Abell has served as a consultant advising university administrators and librarians at numerous institutions, including Columbia, Harvard, Toronto, Michigan, Northwestern, New York University, and the New York Public Library.
Adrian W. Alexanderwas appointed executive director of the Big 12 Plus Library Consortium. Alexander was director of strategic development at the Faxon Company, Inc., a serials management services com- pany. He also served as head of the Faxon Institute, a continuing education and research arm of the com- pany. He has spent al- most 13 years in the serials industry in a va- riety of sales, market- ing, and strategic plan- ning roles. At Faxon his primary focus has been in the academic library market. Alexander has an MLS and a Certifi- cate of Advanced Study in library administration from the Univer- sity of North Texas, where he also worked as a reference librarian/bibliographer and head of administrative services. He is an ac- tive member of the ALA and serves on the editorial board of Serials Review. The Big 12 Plus is a regional consortium of research libraries in the greater Midwest with com- mon interests in programs related to infor- mation access, document delivery, distance learning, new information technologies, and cooperative collection development.
Adrian W. Alexander
Richard M. Cochranhas been named dean of Library and Instructional Services at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. He was most recently dean of the library at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, and previously served as library direc- tor at three colleges in Vermont and Ohio. While in New Jersey, Cochran served as presi- dent of the Central Jersey Regional Library Cooperative, president of the Council of New Jersey College and Uni- versity Library Directors, and was a member of the Board of the New Jersey Library Asso- ciation. He earned a B.A. from the University of Maryland, an M.Ed. from Boston University, an MSLS from Wayne State University, and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.
Richard M. Cochran
Peter S. Grahamwill become university li- brarian at Syracuse University, effective Sep- tember 1. He is currently the associate uni- versity librarian for Technical and Networked Information Services at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey—a position he has held since 1987. In 1995, Graham estab- lished university-wide online access to major citation and full-text da- tabases. From 1989 to 1992, Graham served as associate vice president for information services at Rutgers. In this position he created a unified University Comput- ing Services by combining and reorganizing previously separate academic and adminis- trative computing groups. Graham received an MLS from Indiana University, a bachelor of philosophy degree in English Renaissance literature from Oxford University, and a mas- ter of arts degree with honors in English Renaissance literature from Columbia Uni- versity. Graham is a member of the advisory board of Book Arts Press at the University of Virginia; a member of the governing bodies of the Bibliographical Society of America and the ALA; and a member and chair of the gov- erning board of the Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities, a joint organization of Princeton and Rutgers universities.

Shirley Leunghas been appointed univer- sity librarian at Hong Kong Baptist Univer- sity. Leung has been at the University of California, Irvine, for 14 years, where she served as assistant university librarian for technical services, associate uni- versity librarian for re- search and instructional services, and, most re- cently, interim univer- sity librarian. From 1992-93, she was se- lected to be an American Council on Education Fellow and served as an intern in the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost at Arizona State University. Leung received a B.A. in History from Lake Erie College, an MLS from the State University of New York at Albany, and an M.A. in Political Science from the State University of New York at Binghamton. Active in a wide range of campus and professional organizations, she currently cochairs the Invited Papers Subcommittee for the 9th ACRL National Conference.
Shirley Leung
Greg Pronevitzhas been appointed the first regional administrator for the Northeast Massachusetts Regional Library System in North Andover. Pronevitz previously directed the Library Technologies Department at OHIONET for eight years. His professional experience also includes positions at the Ohio State University Libraries, Chemical Abstracts Service, and the Center for Research Libraries. He holds a master’s decree from the State University of New York at Albany School of Library and Information Science and has a bachelor’s in Russian language and literature. Pronevitz was an active member of the Academic Library Association of Ohio, where he was a past-president and board member. He has held committee positions with the ALA, Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies, and Interlibrary Cooperation and Networking Section.
Stephen R. Shorbhas been appointed library director for the Manchester Community-Technical College in Manchester, Connecticut. He was previously head of learning resources at the Higher Colleges of Technology located at Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. He began his library career as reference librarian at Southwest State University in Minnesota and has worked as a computer marketing manager for IBM and Hewlett-Packard. His undergraduate degree and MLS are both from the University of Iowa.
Pamela Snelsonhas been named college librarian at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Snelson was previously associate librarian at Drew University with responsibilities for automation and public services. A 1975 graduate of Drew, Snelson went on to earn her MLS from Rutgers University in 1976, her MA in political science from Drew in 1980, and her Ph.D. from the Rutgers School of Com- munication, Informa- tion and Library Stud- ies in 1993. Snelson has served on numerous committees of ACRL, chairing the College Li- braries section and the editorial board of C&RL News, and was re- cently elected vice president of the PALINET board of trustees.

Debra Curriehas been appointed collection manager for agriculture and environmental sciences at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Carol Doylehas been appointed head of Government Documents & Map Libraries in the Henry Madden Library at California State University in Fresno.
