NY publishes color photograph guide

The New York State Program for the Conservation and Preservation of Library Research Materials, pait of the Division of Library Development in the New York State Library, has published Storage Guide for Color Photographic Materials by James M. Reilly. The 48-page guide explains the color stability of photographic materials, causes of image fading, and how proper storage can postpone that degradation. An accompanying “wheel” describes environmental conditions that affect color photographs. The conclusions and recommendations included in the guide are based on extensive accelerated aging tests, which were designed to investigate the effects of storage conditions on image fading.

The cost is $20 for orders prepaid to the University of the State of New York, and order forms are available at http://www.nysl. nysed.gov/libdev/storage.htm. The cost is $25, plus $3 shipping and handling, for orders paid by credit card to the Image Permanence Institute; phone: (716) 474-5199.
