Pam Spiegel

Carol A. Hert,assistant pro- fessor at the Indiana Univer- sity School of Library and Information Science, was the winner of the American So- ciety for Information Science (ASIS) 1995 Doctoral Forum Award presented in October. Hert’s research, “Exploring a New Model for the Under- standing of Information Re- trieval Interactions,” was chosen for its importance to information science, the quality of its literature review, the appropriateness and soundness of the research methodology, its analysis of results and conclusions, and its clarity of presentation.

Toni Olshen,associate university librarian at York University, was named by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) as visiting program officer with its Diversity Program. Olshen will concentrate her research on diversity issues in both large academic and public libraries in Canada. Beginning in November 1995 and going through May 1996, she will work with Kriza Jennings, ARL’s program officer for diversity and minority recruitment, to incorporate the Canadian research library perspective into ARL’s program.

Appointments

Shirley K. Baker

Shirley K. Baker,dean of University Libraries at Washington University (WU) in St. Louis, has been appointed to the newly created position of vice-chancellor for infor- mation technology at WU, as she continues in her position as dean, which she has held since 1989. In her new post, Baker will have respon- sibility for planning and coordinating the elaboration of the information infrastructure at WU. She previously served as associate director of

Shirley Bakerlibraries for public services at MIT, and as a librarian at Johns Hopkins University and Northwestern Univer- sity.

Christopher Millson- Martulahas been named director of the library at Lynchburg College’s Knight- Capron Library. Millson- Martula joins Lynchburg from Arizona State Univer- sity West, where he served as assistant director for administrative services and associate librarian.

Cerise Oberman

Cerise Oberman,director of libraries at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, has been named dean of library and information services, and her respon- sibilities have been ex- panded to encompass computing systems and support services. Accord- ing to E. Thomas Moran, vice-president for aca- demic affairs, the promo- tion will allow the col- lege to take advantage of Oberman’s “extraordinary talent and leadership qualities” to com- bine library and computing resources for “maxi- mum efficiency and effectiveness.”

Jay Starratt

Jay Starratt,director of technical and automa- tion services at Southern Illinois University (SIU) at Carbondale, has been named dean of Lovejoy Library at SIU at Ed- wardsville. Starratt has been at SIU-Carbondale since 1987, serving first as assistant director of li- brary services. Before that he served as assis- tant director for admin- istrative services and chair of the Circulation Services Department at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He re- ceived his MLS from Emory University.

Larry E. Sullivanhas been named chief librarian at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He formerly served as chief of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress, and, before that, as chief librarian at Lehman College.

Connie Capers Thorsonhas been appointed director of the Pelletier Library at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Before joining Allegheny, Thorson worked at the University of New Mexico General Library in Albuquerque for 16 years, serving first as head of acquisitions and then as head of reference. A member of ALA, ACRL, the Modern Language Association, and the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, Thorson received, in 1994, the first Lifetime Achievement Award given by the South Central Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.

Ann J. Wolpert,executive director of library and information services at the Harvard Business School, has been appointed director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries. Wolpert joined Harvard in 1992 after 16 years at Arthur D. Little (ADL), Inc., serving as technical information specialist, manager of the Research Library, and director of the Cambridge Information Center. She also was an ADL consultant in library planning, publishing, and information technology from 1982 to 1992. From 1967 to 1976 she served as the librarian at the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

Mary Antheshas been named science librarian at Wichita State University.

Therese Bakerrecently became interlibrary loan librarian at Western Kentucky University.

Judy Bowenis the new reference librarian at Prestonsburg Community College, Kentucky.

Jean Brunsdalehas joined the General Reference and Documents Department at Illinois State University, Normal.

Sue Burchhas been named assistant director/administrative librarian at the University of Kentucky Law Library.

Frederick Burchstedhas been appointed reference librarian in Harvard University’s Wid- ener Library.

Jo Burgessrecently became assistant librarian, assistant head of preservation, and head of the Conservation Section in the Preservation Department at Indiana University-Bloomington.

Beverly Carveris the new head of electronic resources and reference services at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Beau David Caseis now classics, German, linguistics, and Romance languages librarian at Ohio State University.

Juliet Casperis the new assistant librarian, electronic services and reference librarian in the Law Library at Indiana University-Bloomington.

Dig Chinnhas joined the staff at the Bibliographic Center for Research in Aurora, Colorado, as project manager of cataloging services.

Mary-Beth Clarkis now information access librarian at the International University of Japan.

Leslie Conniffis the new project archivist in the University Archives and Records Center at the University of Louisville, Kentucky.

Jim Cunninghamhas joined the Illinois State University staff as systems development librarian.

Dennis Dillonhas been named head librarian in the Electronic Information Services Office at the University of Texas at Austin.

Beth J. Doddis now curator of the Architectural Drawings Collection in the Architecture and Planning Library at the University of Texas at Austin.

Ada Ducashas been appointed head of the Neil John Maclean Library at the University of Manitoba.

Sidney Enghas been appointed acting chief librarian at Borough of Manhattan Community College.

Martha Fleminghas been named training librarian at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Wayne R. Wheelerhas been named systems librarian at Luzerne Community College in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania.

Marjorie V. Whitehas been appointed social sciences librarian at Millersville University of Pennsylvania.

Tom Williamshas been appointed director of the Biomedical Library at the University of South Alabama in Mobile.

Lisa Woodis now audiovisual archivist, Special Collections, at the University of Kentucky.

Ted M. Wygantis now public services librarian/evening supervisor at Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky.

Retirements

Elizabeth Baker,section chief of the Music Library at Eastern Kentucky University since 1969, retired in June.

Maynard Brichfordhas retired as university archivist at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign.

Hans Burndorferretired at the end of December from the University of British Columbia (UBC). Burndorfer began as a reference librarian at UBC in 1964, then was appointed the library system’s first official bibliographer in 1965. He became head of the Music Library in 1967, and later added new responsibilities as head of the Fine Arts Division (1985), Maps, and Special Collections and Archives (1992).

Diane Carothershas retired as head of the Communications Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

George Crabbretired in September after a 30- year career at Eastern Kentucky University as section chief of cataloging and reference.

Norma Jean Gibson,reference librarian at the University of Kentucky, retired in July.

Glenn Gritzmacherhas retired as education librarian at Illinois State University.

George N. Hartjeretired in August after 31 years as director of libraries and head of the Division of Libraries and Museums at Northeast Missouri State University. A 1950 graduate of the University of Illinois Graduate Library School, Hartje worked at the University of Illinois, Washington University, and St. Louis Public Library before joining Northeast. An active member of ALA committees, he also served as president of the Missouri Association of College and Research Libraries and the Missouri Library Association.

June Martin,coordinator of public services at Eastern Kentucky University, retired last spring after 24 years of service.

Margaret Myers,director of ALA’s Office for Library Personnel Resources, retired in October after 21 years of service. In November she left for a two-year Peace Corps assignment in Botswana, where she will help develop community libraries. ALA executive director Elizabeth Martinez said of Myers, “In many ways, she has been the voice for librarians in speaking for equal pay and status for women.”

Mimi Penchanskyhas retired as reference librarian from Queens College Library, New York.

Paul Perkushas retired as director of the Central Office Library and Archives at the City University of New York.

Carol Robertsonhas retired as agriculture librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign.

William Rorickhas retired as music reference librarian at Queens College, New York.

Lois Schneiderhas retired as head of information services at Queens College, New York.

Sara Scottretired in July after 20 years as humanities catalog librarian at Western Kentucky University.

Raman Venkataramanretired at the end of December from the University of British Columbia (UBC) after 20 years of service. Venkataraman joined the Science and Engineering Division at UBC Libraries in 1975, shortly after receiving his MLS from the University of Western Ontario.

Deaths

Edward H. Baldridge,head cataloger at Miami-Dade Community College, died October 28, 1995, at the age of 51. Baldridge joined Miami-Dade in 1989 following service with Manatee Community College, Charlotte-Glades Library System, and the Free Library of Philadelphia. A member of ALA and ACRL, Baldridge most recently served on the Community and Junior College Libraries Section’s Library Resources Review Committee.

Goldia Hester,reference librarian and classics and archaeology bibliographer at the University of Texas at Austin (UTA), died at the end of August. Her career with the UTA General Libraries spanned 30 years. She received the General Libraries Librarian Excellence Award in 1982. ■
