Ann-Christe Galloway

William Baker,English and American Literature and Language Specialist at Northern Illinois University (NIU), has been awarded a NIU Presidential Research Professorship. He will hold the title of presidential research professor for four years and then the title of distinguished research professor.

Sheri Downer,interim dean at Auburn University Libraries (AU), has received the Alabama Library Association’s Distinguished Service Award. Over the course of her 25-year career at AU, Downer has made many contributions to the AU Libraries, the Alabama Library Association, and other Alabama library associations and projects. She recently helped write and obtain an Institute for Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant for the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries, and she was instrumental in developing and funding the Alabama Virtual Library.

Three Wayne State University librarians— Cindy Krolikowski, Fran Krempasky, and Vanessa Middleton—participated in the Michigan Library Association Leadership Academy, a three-day intensive program designed to develop the leadership abilities of individuals within the library workplace.

Appointments

Fiona Blackhas been appointed acting director of the School of Library and Information Studies at Dalhousie University.

Steve LaBashhas been appointed interim director of the University of Baltimore’s Langsdale Library.

John M. Unsworthhas been named dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Unsworth is currently associate professor of English and the director of the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities at the University of Virginia-Charlottesville. He will begin his new duties as dean on August 16, 2003.

Michael Austinis now assistant processing archivist at Harvard University Library.

Richard Bleilerhas been promoted to university associate librarian as the humanities reference librarian/liaison for English and German at the University of Connecticut Libraries.

Kathryn E. Boydhas joined the University at Albany Libraries SUNY as head of acquisitions.

Katie Bradyhas joined Temple University Libraries as electronic resources librarian.

Terry Catapanois now the special collections analyst/librarian in the Libraries Digital Program Division at the Columbia University Libraries.

Linda L. Chenowethhas been appointed reference librarian at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.

Rajwant Chilanahas joined the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign as South Asian Studies librarian in the Asian Library.

Tamar Evangelista-Doughertyhas been appointed project archivist for the David Dinkins Papers in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University.

Stephen Fairfieldhas been promoted to university librarian II as the reference librarian/liaison for computer sciences, engineering, mathematics, and statistics at the University of Connecticut Libraries.

Jeffrey Garretthas been appointed assistant university librarian for collection management at Northwestern University Library.

Joshua Garrishas accepted the position of reference librarian at the University of South Carolina’s Thomas Cooper Library.

Tony Harvellhas been named head of acquisitions at the University of California-San Diego.

Karrie Petersonhas been appointed head of government information services at the North Carolina State University Libraries.

Tracey Rudnickhas been named university librarian III as music and dramatic arts librarian/ liaison to music and dramatic arts at the University of Connecticut Libraries.

Penny Scott has been appointed general reference librarian at the Gleeson Library/Geschke Center at the University of San Francisco.

Jill Sextonis now systems librarian: integrated library system at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Laura Smarthas been named electronic resources catalog librarian at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona.

Carol Spectoris now government information reference librarian at the Gleeson Library/ Geschke Center at the University of San Francisco.

Carla M. Summershas been named head of special collections at the University of Central Florida-Orlando.

Irina Tarsishas been appointed curatorial assistant in printing and graphics arts at the Harvard College Library.

Michelle Williamsis now serials cataloger at the Harvard University Library.

Rutherford Witthushas been named university assistant librarian at the University of Connecticut Libraries.

Milton Wolfhas been named head of collection management at the University of Central Florida-Orlando.

Retirements

Jan Keller,dean of learning resources at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California, is retiring in June 2003 after 34 years of service to the college. When Keller began his career at the college, he served as reference librarian and became dean in 1977. He has been active in regional and statewide library/learn- ing resources organizations and is a member of ACRL.

Deaths

Francie Davis,reference librarian at Dowling College, passed away unexpectedly. She joined the Dowling Library Faculty in September 1995 as electronic resources librarian and library Web master. From 1997 to 2001, Davis served as departmental coordinator. During her eight years in the library, Davis was instrumental in revolutionizing Dowling’s access to electronic resources by making them accessible online remotely. She was also active in regional library professional organizations, serving as chair of the Long Island Library Resources Council Annual Conference Committee, copresident of ACRL’s Greater New York Metropolitan Area Chapter and cochair of the chapter’s ACRL/ New York Symposium Committee. ■
