Duncan Aldrich,librarian at the University of Nevada, Reno, has been selected chair of the Depository Library Council (DLC) to the United States Public Printer for the 1999-2000 term. DLC advises the Public Printer on matters pertaining to the Federal Depository Library Program. DLC consists of 15 members appointed by the Public Printer, serving three years each. Duncan will be in his third (or senior) year, which means he will graduate from DLC in the year 2000.
Scott Devine,chief conservator for the Texas Tech Libraries, traveled to Florence, Italy, last spring to study the impact of the 1966 Florence floods on library preservation. Devine, whose trip was funded by a grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, conducted his research project at the National Library and the State Archives in Florence.
Jim Ginther,assistant archivist for manuscripts at the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library at Texas Tech, participated in an international exchange in the spring that involved traveling to the Linen Hall Library in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Ginther, whose trip was funded by the British Council, the Texas Tech Vietnam Center and the Texas Tech Libraries, learned about similarities and differences in the development and maintenance of archival collections.
SOLINET has elected its new Board and OCLC Users Council. The Board of Directors includes Stella Bentley, dean of libraries at Auburn University, and Merryll S. Penson, associate university librarian for Public Services at the University of Georgia. The delegation to the OCLC Users Council includes Larry P. Alford, senior associate university librarian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Jesse B. Arnold, director of Library Services at Alcorn State University. The Board of Directors also elected the following officers: Chair, Barbara J. Brown, university librarian at Washington & Lee University; Vice-Chair, Lee C. Van Orsdel, director of libraries, University of Montevallo; Treasurer. Rhoda K. Channing, director, Wake Forest University Library; Secretary, Waltrene M. Canada, director of Library Services at North Carolina A&T State University.
Appointments
Richard AmRhein
Richard AmRheinhas been appointed university librarian at Valparaiso University (VU). AmRhein came to VU from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where he has been associate dean for Technical and Automation services in Library Affairs since 1997. Prior to that, he served as head music librarian (1992-94) and head of technical services (1995-96) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. From 1984 to 1991, he served on the staff of the Laurie Music Library at Rutgers University. AmRhein is active in ACRL, currently serving as chair of the editorial board for CHOICE magazine and recently served as cochair of the Contributed Papers Subcommittee for ACRL’s 9th National Conference in Detroit. He is also this year’s jury chair for the ALA Spectrum Initiative Scholarship Program.
Steve Crandallhas been named the director of Alfred University’s (AU) Herrick Library. A 1976 graduate of AU’s College of Business, from 1977-90, Crandall held positions of increasing responsibility in the library, receiving tenure in 1984 and a promotion to assistant director in 1990. From 1991 to 1994, he coordinated the installation of the FLORIS automated library system, and in 1995 he was promoted to associate director. During the 1998-99 academic year, he served as interim director of the library.
Mark Herringhas been appointed dean of Dacus Library at Winthrop University. He had been dean of Library Services at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma, since 1992. During his career he taught courses relating to teacher certification, written grant proposals, and worked in libraries at King College in Bristol, Tennessee, Vanderbilt University, and the public library of Nashville and Davidson County in Tennessee. Herring is president-elect of the Association for Library and Learning Center Directors (ALLCeD) and has served as president of the College and University Division of the Oklahoma Library Association and as the Intellectual Freedom chair of the Tennessee Library Association.
L. Suzanne Kellerman
L. Suzanne Kellerman,preservation librarian and head of the Penn State University (PSU) Libraries Preservation Department, has been appointed Judith O. Seig chair for Preservation. She has been with the PSU libraries since 1985 and was named its first preservation librarian in 1990. Kellerman has provided national leadership in Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) preservation projects funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the National Agricultural Library. On the state level, Kellerman is a founding member of the Pennsylvania Preservation Consortium, which drafted the first statewide preservation plan.
Frances O’Brien,former deputy university librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), has been appointed dean of West Virginia Libraries. Before joining the library at UIUC, O’Brien was director of Administrative Services at Virginia Polytechnic Institute Libraries. She began her library career as a cataloger at the University of Tennessee Library in 1973From there she became assistant director of the Cataloging Department at the University of Georgia. Between 1984 and 1989 she was a personnel officer, first at the University of Delaware Library and then at Virginia Tech. A member of ALA, O’Brien has served on many committees related to library affairs and has been the coauthor of numerous publications related to library personnel issues.
Marietta A. Plank,former director of Technical Services at the University of Maryland Libraries, College Park, has been appointed executive director of the Chesapeake Information and Research Library Alliance (CIRLA). Nine ARL libraries in the District of Columbia, Delaware, and Maryland belong to CIRLA. The executive director will provide management to increase levels of cooperation among members.
Peggy D. Rudd,chief of the Bureau of Library Development at the State Library of Florida, Tallahassee, has been selected by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission to head the agency as director and librarian.
Keith W. Russellhas been appointed dean of libraries at the University of Kansas (UK). He had been deputy director of the National Agricultural Library (NAL) since 1995. He joined NAL in 1984 and held several positions there, including associate director for public services. Prior to joining NAL, Russell worked as a program associate for the Council on Library Resources in Washington, D.C., head science and engineering librarian at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and in positions at the University of Texas, Austin, and the Houston Academy of MedicineTexas Medical Center libraries. UK Provost David Shulenburger said Russell “exhibits qualities of vision and collaborative ingenuity, which will be so important as libraries adapt to new information technologies, while maintaining traditional values of service and unimpeded access to information.”

Tiffini Travishas been appointed psychology and communications librarian at California State University in Long Beach.
Steven Weisshas been appointed sound and image librarian in the Manuscripts Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Heather Whippleis now electronic resources librarian at the Reed College Library.
Retirements
Yoshi Hendrickshas retired after nearly 30 years of service to the University of Nevada in Reno (UNR). She joined the faculty in 1970 as assistant catalog librarian and served as head of that department from 1978 to 1993In addition to her career in the catalog department, Hendricks devoted many years of service to UNR’s Japanese culture and education programs, serving as Tottori English Language Institute coordinator since 1975. She also taught Japanese culture and language classes from 1977 to 1989, until the Foreign Languages Department hired a full-time Japanese language instructor. As emeritus faculty, Hendricks will continue her work with Japanese student organizations.
Hwa-Wei Leehas retired, after 40 years of service in the library profession and 21 years at Ohio University (OU), as dean of university libraries at OU. In recognition of his achievements, OU’s Board of Trustees adopted a resolution naming a new library building the Hwa-Wei Lee Library Annex. The Board also conferred on Lee the title dean of libraries emeritus. Under his leadership, the
OU Libraries have experienced growth in every facet of its operations, programs and endowments, and has become one of the top 121 research libraries in the United States and Canada. During Lee’s administration, an international librarian exchange program was developed and OU became a depository for four countries.

Susan Quinlan,librarian, retired December 1998, after 31 years of service to San Francisco State University.
Marianne Scott,National Librarian of Canada, has retired. Having held the position since 1984, Scott was praised by Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, who cited Scott’s tireless work “at the forefront of the national institution” as well as her “international reputation for the work she has done to promote the role that libraries play in our society.” During Scott’s 15 years at the helm, the National Library has strengthened its Canadiana collections and ensured their preservation for future generations; established partnerships and formed networks to deliver programs and services; and widened the library’s outreach, including the establishment of the Friends of the National Library of Canada.
Harriet Talan,librarian, retired June 1998, after 29 years of service to San Francisco State University.
Deaths
Margaret Hayes Grazier,nationally renown librarian and educator, died on July 9, 1999. In 1965, she became a professor in the Library Science Program at Wayne State University, where she served until retiring in 1983.
Margaret H. Grazier
After retiring, Grazier served as a volunteer librarian in the Detroit Garden Center at the Moross House in Detroit. She has written numerous articles and has spoken on the role of school media specialists and the special challenges of school libraries. She has held office in ALA, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and the Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME). She received the AASL 1986 President’s Award for outstanding contributions to school librarianship and school library development and the MAME 1987 Outstanding Meritorious Service Award. Grazier also won the 1998 Bookwoman of the Year award, presented by the Detroit Chapter of the Women’s National Book Association.
Sheila Knights,librarian emerita of the J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State University, died on July 2, 1999. Knights joined the university in October 1955 as a reference librarian in the Humanities and Language Arts Department. She was later responsible for the General Reading Room, which housed current periodicals, a browsing collection, and some university archival materials. When the library reorganized, Knights became the head of the Periodicals Department, which she led until 1983. In 1986, she became a member of the Reader Services Department, where she served at the Reference Desk, coordinated Information Desk service, oversaw gifts to the library, and worked with donors and the Friends of the Library. She retired in December 1995, after 40 years of service. ■
