Nicholas C. Burckel, associate dean for collections and services at the Washington University Libraries, St. Louis, has been elected vice-president/ president-elect of the Society of American Archivists. His term as vice-president began in September, and he will assume the presidency in fall 1996.
Wilfred W. Fong, assistant dean of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Library and Information Sciences, was elected president of the Chinese American Library Association. In addition to memberships in ALA and the American Society for Information Science (ASIS), Fong acts as editor of the Journal of Library and Information Science.
E. J. Josey, professor emeritus of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh, recently received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Clark Atlanta University. The citation read in part, “Josey has helped raise consciousness of libraries and their role in society and the contributions made by African Americans to that role.”
Sul Lee, dean of University Libraries for the University of Oklahoma, has been named editor of Haworth Press’ quarterly journal Collection Management. Lee is currently editor of Haworth’s Journal of Library Administration and is executive editor for library and information science for Haworth Press as a whole.
John V. Richardson Jr., an associate professor in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, received Indiana University’s 1995 Louise Maxwell Award, given annually to recognize outstanding achievements made by an alumnus in the field of library science. A 1978 IU graduate, Richardson has mentored over 800 graduate students at UCLA, 40 of whom published articles or book chapters which were the result of his direction.
Victoria Steele, acting associate dean for library advancement and external relations and head of special collections at the University of Southern California, has been named a 1995–96 Fulbright Scholar to the United Kingdom. She will be affiliated with the University of London, working with senior library officials to create a development program for the library there. Steele is the author of the award-winning book Becoming a Fundraiser: The Principles and Practice of Library Development (ALA, 1992).
Mary I. Piette, reference librarian at Utah State University, Logan, began a one-year leave of absence in September to serve as librarian at the Synol of the Nile Schools in Cairo, Egypt. While there, Piette will be developing skills in cross-cultural education and visiting libraries in the Middle East.
Nolan F. Pope, associate director for automation in the General Library System at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been elected to a second three-year term on the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) Board of Directors. Pope is a member of ALA, the American Society for Information Science (ASIS), and the Special Libraries Association.

JoAnn Arnold is the new director of Specker Library at Calumet College of Saint Joseph in Hammond, Indiana.
Janis R. Deitch has been appointed director of the library of the Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. She most recently served for 14 years as information specialist for the American Sterilizer Company. She is a member of the Special Libraries Association, the Medical Library Association, and the North Carolina Special Libraries Association for which she chaired the Public Relations Committee in 1994/95.
Larry Hardestyhas been named college librarian at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. He served as director of library services at Eckerd College since 1983Before that he served as head of the Reference Department at DePauw University (1975–1983) and as a reference librarian at the University of Nebraska-Keamey (1973– 1975). An active member of ACRL, Hardesty has served on the Board of Directors and on the Standards, Planning, and Publications committees. He is currently chair of the College Libraries .Section and on the editorial board of C&RL.

Karen Hornyhas been appointed dean of library services at Southwest Missouri State University (SMSU). She joins SMSU from Northwestern University, where she was assistant university librarian since 1971. Active in many professional associations and advisory groups, Horny currently serves on an ad hoc committee for the White House Conference on Library and Information Services,
Marilyn J. Martinhas been appointed dean of library services at Rowan College of New Jersey. Martin previously served as director of learning resources at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas; reference librarian at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington; and cataloger at St. Martin’s College in Lacey, Washington.
David L. Pappashas been appointed library director for the Edmund Stanley Library at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. For the past three years Pappas has served as campus librarian for Washington State University (WSU) at Spokane and as director of the Cooperative Academic Library, a joint-use library serving WSU, Eastern Washington University, and the Spokane County Medical Society.
Cynthia Potterhas been named director of the Eunice and James L. West Library at Texas Wesleyan University (TWU). Potter joined TWU in 1988 as reference librarian. She was named head of reference and circulation in 1989, and interim director in 1994. She is a member of the Alliance for Higher Education North Texas Council of Library Directors and the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council.
Edward A. Scotthas been named director of libraries at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. Scott formerly served as director of the library at Furman University, and as director of the libraries at Keene State and Castleton State Colleges.

Philip Tompkins
Mountain Community College in Phoenix, has been named executive director of libraries at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Tompkins previously served as deputy university librarian and associate dean of libraries at the University of Southern California, chief librarian at Brooklyn College, and associate director of libraries at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Jerome Yavarkovsky,director of the New York State Library, has been named university librarian at Boston College. He previously served in a variety of positions at Columbia University Libraries (1969–83), and was dean of libraries at Adelphi University (1983–85). A member of ARL, Yavarkovsky currently serves on the Journal of Library Administration editorial board and on the OCLC Online Computer Library Center Research Libraries Advisory Committee.

Retirements
Jean Almand,science librarian for more than 20 years at Western Kentucky University, retired last December. She received the Margie Helm Award for Outstanding Performance in 1994 when the Science Library merged with Helm-Cravens Library.
Thomas V. Atkinshas retired from his position as chief librarian of Hunter College Library, New York City.
Maidel K. Casonretired at the end of July after nine years at the University of Delaware Library in Newark. Cason most recently served as assistant director for library administrative services, and also served as acting assistant director of libraries for public services, and as personnel librarian. She also worked at Northwestern University as African documents librarian and as cataloger and reference librarian in the Transportation Library.

Richard M. Cheski,state librarian of Ohio, retired at the end of September after 17 years of service there. Cheski previously served as director of the Colorado State Library and assistant commissioner of library services in the Colorado State Department of Education. He was also director of several public libraries. A past-president of the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), Cheski is past-chairman of the State Information Policy Consortium.
John R. Clunehas retired from his position as chief librarian of Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, New York.
Michael J. Costinretired as senior sublibrarian at the University of Hong Kong at the end of July after nine years of service. Before that he held a similar post at the Chinese University of Hong Kong for 11 years. He also served at the Library of Congress Office in New Delhi, Northwestern University, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the Library of Congress in Washington.

Dorothy Grayrecently retired as senior reference librarian at the University of Louisville.
Janet Hodgsonrecently retired as associate archivist at the University of Louisville.
Lina M. Lowryhas retired from her position as chief librarian of the Borough of Manhattan Community College, New York.
James P. Miller,director of library services at Somerset Community College in Kentucky, retired in February after 25 years of service there.
Thomas A. Souterretired at the end of August as dean of library services at Troy State University in Alabama, after ten years of service. Souter began his career in the Florida State University Library in 1957. From I960 to 1962 he was head librarian at the New Mexico Military Institute, then went to Indiana University in 1962 as head of the library’s Circulation Department, then assistant director for general services. In 1975 he joined Virginia Tech, where he was associate director of libraries for ten years.
Deaths
Norman B. Brown,professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), died in July. Brown began his career as reference and acquisition librarian at Union College, then joined the UIUC Library in 1953, where he served as assistant reference librarian and documents bibliographer until 1958. He then became a member of the Serials Department, and continued as the serials acquisition librarian and assistant serials librarian for 20 years. After that he served as head of the Collection Development Division, head of the Collection Development and Preservation Department, and assistant director for bibliographic services and preservation. He retired in 1989 as the assistant director for special collections and preservation.
Mary Ann Griffin,director of the Falvey Memorial Library at Villanova University since 1984, died August 14 at the age of 49. She previously served as director of the Xavier University Library from 1979 to 1984. Professionally active, Griffin served at various times as president of the Delaware Valley Chapter of ACRL, president of the board of PALINET, and president-elect of the Academic Library Association of Ohio.

Dorothy M. Gropp,88, a retired librarian, died July 18 in Greenbelt, Maryland. She began her career as a cataloger at McKenzie College in Sao Paulo, Brazil and later helped compile surveys of libraries for the Middle American Research Institute at Tulane University. She retired from the American Meteorological Society as chief cataloger and later worked for the National Council on the Aging, where she was acting librarian.
Christine Longstreet,former head of reference services at the University of Chicago (UC) Libraries, died August 19 at the age of 81. Longstreet was Army librarian at Winter General Hospital in Topeka during World War II. She also served as a librarian at Baker University, the University of Maryland, and the Art Institute of Chicago before joining UC in 1956. She retired from there in 1979. Professionally active, Longstreet served as president of the Chicago Library Club, and held several offices in the Chicago branch of the American Association of University Women.
Miranda Hsu-Yung Pao,59, professor of information and library studies at the University of Michigan (UM), Ann Arbor, died in August. Bom in Shanghai, China, Pao joined the UM faculty in 1986 and rose to international stature as a distinguished scholar in the fields of bibliometrics, information retrieval, and evaluation of information systems. Her numerous awards include a National Library of Medicine Medical Informatics Fellowship, and the Lazerow Lecturer Award from Texas Women’s University. She was the only scholar in the field of information and library studies to win the National Library of Medicine Research Career Development Award.
Beth Janet Shapiro,Rice University vice-provost and university librarian, died of cancer August 3 at the age of 49. Shapiro began her career in 1972 as urban policy and planning librarian at Michigan State University (MSU), where she advanced through a number of positions to become deputy director of the MSU Libraries in 1988. She joined Rice in 1991 to become the first woman to hold the position of university librarian. A member of ALA, Shapiro was also a member of the Association of Research Libraries and the American Sociological Association. Her book, Selection of Library Materials in Applied and Interdisciplinary Fields, was published by ALA in 1987.
