Ann-Christe Young

Cerise Oberman,dean of library and infor- mation services at Plattsburgh State Univer- sity of New York (SUNY), has been promoted to the rank of Distin- guished Librarian by the SUNY Board of Trust- ees. Oberman joined Plattsburgh State in 1988 as director of libraries with the academic rank of librarian. In 1995 she was promoted to dean of library and information services. Active in ALA, Oberman was selected in 1999 as Librarian of the Year by the Eastern New York Chapter of ACRL. Oberman has published numerous books and papers, and has presented at regional, state, and na- tional conferences and institutes. She has been active on several SUNY committees, regional and local organizations, and library groups. She is also active with numerous committees on the Plattsburgh State campus.

Appointments

Donald Dyal,director of Cushing Memorial Library and associate university librarian at Texas A&M University Libraries, will become dean of the University Libraries at Texas Tech in Lubbock on December 1, 2001. Dyal, who holds the Mary and Mavis Kelsey Endowed Professorship, began working at Texas A&M University in 1973 as assistant acquisitions librarian. In 1977 he became the second special collections librarian, multiplying its volumes tenfold to 150,000 volumes. Under Dyal’s leadership eight collections grew into 250 collection areas covering history, literature, art, natural history, science fiction, and nautical archaeology, as well as British authors Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, and Matthew Arnold.

Sharon Hugehas been appointed library director at the Lancaster branch of Ohio University.

Louis A. Pitschmannhas been appointed dean of libraries at the University of Alabama. Pitschmann had been associate director for collection development and management at the University of Wisconsin at Madison (UWM) since 1986, where he oversaw areas of collec- tion development, pres- ervation services and fa- cilities, and user ser- vices. For the past two years he has served as co-chair of the Association of Research Libraries’ German Resources project. He is also active on various ALCTS Collection Management and Development Section committees. Prior to joining UWM, Pitschmann served in a number of positions, including deputy collections librarian at Cornell University. Pitschmann has published monographs and articles on collection devel- opment and Germanic languages and linguis- tics.

Dennis C. Tuckerhas been named director of libraries at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Prior to this position, he was director of Tucker & Associates Library Consulting Services and an adjunct faculty member of the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University. Tucker was also a school library consultant and member liaison at Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority (INCOLSA) in Indianapolis. For four years, he was director of Project Hi-Net, a $2 million grant to improve automation in 31 high schools in Indianapolis. He worked at the University of Notre Dame and was library director at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana. Tucker is a member of ALA, where he serves on several committees. Tucker was a monthly columnist for American Libraries. His most recent publications are “Library Relations and Collection Shifts” (Information Today, 1999) and “Research Techniques for Scholars and Students in Religion and Theology” (Information Today, 2000).

Mary Marshall Clarkhas been appointed director of Columbia University’s Oral History Research Office.

Walter Cresslerhas been appointed science librarian at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Craig Dowskihas been named senior assistant librarian in Central Technical Services at the University of Buffalo, SUNY.

Michael Fosmirehas been appointed science librarian at Purdue University Libraries in West Lafayette, Indiana. He continues as Physics and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences librarian.

Brook Freemanis now assistant life sciences librarian at Purdue University Libraries in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Renee Gearyhas been named reference and instruction librarian at Ohio University Libraries.

Jan Guisehas been appointed coordinator of reference and instruction at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.

Jane Kinkusis now Mathematical Sciences and General Sciences librarian at Purdue University Libraries in West Lafayette, Indiana.

John R. M. Lawrencehas been selected as associate director for Administrative and User Services at J.Y. Joyner Library of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.

Judith Marleyhas been hired as music/dance theater librarian at the Hamon Arts Library in the Central University Libraries of Southern Methodist University.

Jacquelyn McFaddenis now reference librarian and coordinator of document retrieval at the Ida Jane Dacus Library of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Terry Metzhas been appointed college librarian and associate vice president for Technology and Information Services at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts.

Shelley Myerhas been appointed assistant librarian in the Central Technical Services at the University of Buffalo, SUNY.

Retirements

Judy Daso,head of Documents Collection at Ohio University, has retired.

Richard L. Funkhouserhas retired after more than 44 years of service to the Purdue University Libraries in West Lafayette, Indiana. Funkhouser served as engineering librarian, mathematical sciences and geosciences librarian, and science librarian. He retired August 31, 2001, as mathematical sciences librarian.

Anne Goss,director of Health Sciences Library at Ohio University, has retired.

Roberta Kramer-Baker,Instructional Media Librarian, has retired from Purdue University Libraries in West Lafayette, Indiana on August 31, 2001. Kramer-Baker served the university for over 27 years.

Charles B. Osburnretired as dean of libraries at the University of Alabama on August 16, 2001. Under his leadership, three new libraries were constructed, two integrated library systems were implemented, a successful capital campaign was completed, and an annual giving program and library leadership board were established. Following a year’s leave, Osburn will return as professor in the University of Alabama’s School of Library and Information Studies. ■
