This is an illustration by Ferdinand Bauer from Flora Graeca, a ten-volume work by John Sibthorp, published in London (1804-1840). It is the largest and one of the rarest such works ever undertaken, with fewer than 50 works printed. This copy is from Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden Library. It is one of the works featured in the exhibition "The World From Here: Treasures of the Great Libraries of Los Angeles," at the UCLA Armand Hammer Museum until January 13. The show brings together almost 400 rare books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, etc. from 32 different library collections in Los Angeles County. The photographer was Paula Goldman.
