Mary Ellen Davis

Althea H. Jenkins,executive director of ACRL, has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the American Association of Higher Education (AAHE). She is one of 21 trustees that are responsible for the policies and directions of the AAHE. Jenkins will serve a four-year term.

Lou Albert, vice-president at AAHE, hailed the appointment as a benefit to both

AAHE and ACRL. “We are excited about Althea’s appointment to the Board and feel that it sends a strong signal to the faculty and administrative members of AAHE about the importance of libraries and to librarians about their involvement in the broader higher education spectrum.”

Jenkins sees a number of opportunities for joint activities between the associations, commenting, “This brings librarians, faculty, and academic administrators together face-to-face to address issues of mutual interest. I am looking forward to working with AAHE’s Board, staff, and members to strengthen these relationships in the higher education community.”

Jenkins’s career is distinguished by a breadth of experience in library and information professional, higher education, and notfor-profit association management. Prior to joining ACRL in 1991, Jenkins served as library director at New College of the University of South Florida, the honors liberal arts college of the State University System of Florida. She is a former library director of the Miami-Dade Community College System and a county school librarian. She holds a doctorate in higher education from Nova University and an MLS from Florida State University.

Pat Stenstrom,library and information science librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), received the 1997 Distinguished Service Award presented by the UIUC

Library School Alumni Association (LSAA). The award recognizes her service to the LSAA. She served as its first vice-president in 1988, president in 1989, and past-president in 1990. She has also served on the nominations and awards committees.

Barbara J. Ford

Barbara J. Ford,executive director of the Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries and president of ALA, was named the 1997 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the University of Illinois (UI) Library School Alumni Association. Ford was given the award during the UI Library School

Alumni Association reception at the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco in June. Ford also is a past-president of ACRL and has served on the ALA Council. She has authored many publications on topics including access to government documents, reference services, and information literacy. Her 1997-98 presidential theme, “Libraries: Global Reach, Local Touch,” seeks to promote library enhancements for local communities as well as programs and activities focusing on global issues.

R. N. Sharma

Ravindra N. Sharma,director of the Drain-Jordan Library of West Virginia State College, received the John Ames Humphrey/OCLC/Forest Press Award for his significant contribution to international librarianship. The award, which includes $1,000, was presented at the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco. Joyce C. Wright, chair of the award subcommittee, said, “Dr. Sharma’s contributions to international librarianship are numerous and diverse. He is a scholar, librarian, and activist whose work on library development in south Asia has had a profound impact on the literature of international librarianship. He is truly a tireless leader.” Sharma has been active in both ALA and ACRL. He has authored more than 200 articles, edited and authored nine books, and currently serves as the editor of Library Times International and as an associate editor of International Leads.

Appointments

Prudence Ward Dalrymplehas been named the dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at Dominican University (formerly Rosary College). Dalrymple comes to Dominican from ALA, where she was the director of the Office for Accreditation. Prior to that, she was assistant professor at the GSLIS at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She also practiced as a health services librarian for more than ten years in both clinical and academic libraries. She received her A.B. from Clark University, her MLS from Simmons College, and her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her publications have focused on user interaction with information retrieval systems and LIS education.

Nancy E. Gwinnhas been appointed director of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, a 17-branch system with more than one million volumes and facilities in the Republic of Panama, New York City, and Washington. Since 1984, Gwinn served as the libraries’ assistant director for collections management. Gwinn is the author of the widely quoted history “The Smithsonian Institution Libraries: A Foot in Three

Nancy E. Gwinn

Camps.” She is recognized for her leadership in film-based preservation of library resources, the application of electronic information technologies, and building collaborations and partnerships in collection development and preservation. Before joining the Smithsonian, Gwinn had worked at the Library of Congress, the Council on Library Resources, and the Research Libraries Group. A Fulbright scholar, she has a doctorate from

George Washington University, an MLS from the University of Michigan, and an undergraduate degree from the University of Wyoming.

Ray Metz

Ray Metzhas been appointed associate vice president for Information Service and Resources at Bucknell University. This newly created position is responsible for library services, academic and administrative computing, instructional media services, and campus communications. Prior to this appointment he had been the interim director of the University Library and director of Library Information Technologies at

Case Western Reserve University. He is a former member of the ACRL Board of Directors as well as an active member of CAUSE, Educom, and OhioLINK.

John H. Pollitzhas been appointed director of the O’Keefe Library at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. Previously, he was assistant library director for automated services at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Kathleen Schulzhas been appointed director of the library at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Schulz came to Wittenberg in 1984 as a reference librarian; she later served as humanities librarian and, since 1995, has been acting library director. She earned her BS from Ohio State University, her MLS from Kent State University, and her M.Hum. from Wright State University.

Michael G. Snyderis the new executive director of the Cleveland Area Metropolitan Library System (CAMLS). For the past three years he was director of the Milwaukee County Federated Library System. Prior to that he served as director at public libraries in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He was director of the North Central Library Cooperative in Mansfield, Ohio, from 1981 to 1985.

Michael Borriesis now cataloger in the Technical Process Center in the Office of Library Services at the City University of New York.

Kathryn Brazeehas been appointed assistant reference librarian/government documents at the University of San Francisco.

Yvonne Carignanis now head of the Preservation Department at the University of Maryland at College Park.

Marsha S. Clarkhas been named head of Technical Services in the Technical Process Center in the Office of Library Services at the City University of New York.

John Creechhas been named assistant head of Referenœ/electronic resources librarian at Central Washington University.

Jean E. DeLauchehas been appointed Golda Meir Library development officer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Eugene Dickersonis now head, Selection and Bibliographic Unit, Serial Records Section, National Library of Medicine.

Arthur Downinghas been named chief librarian at Baruch College, City University of New York.

Robert E, Duncanhas been appointed reference/instruction librarian at the Skillman Library, Lafayette College, in Easton, Pennsylvania.

Kuang-yao Fanhas been named curator of the East Asia Collection at the University of Maryland at College Park Libraries.

Joseph Garityis the new coordinator of library research and instruction at the University of San Francisco.

Charles Gilreathhas joined the faculty at Texas A&M University as associate university librarian for Advanced Studies at the Sterling C. Evans Libraries.

Luanne M. Goodsonhas been appointed head, Database Quality Control Section, at WLN.

Carol G. Hixsonis now head of the Cataloging Department at UCLA’s University Research Library.

Gerald V. Holmeswas appointed information specialist, Reference Unit in Library and Information Services, at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Diane Hudsonhas been appointed assistant undergraduate librarian at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Carol Hughesis now head of Information, Research, and Instructional Management (IRIS) at the University of Iowa.

Laurel Jizbais the new head cataloger at Portland State University.

Jayne Kittermanhas been appointed public services librarian at Lamar University-Orange.

Liz Lanehas been appointed director of the New York State Library’s Research Library Division.

Donna McCurleyhas been named assistant head of the Cataloging Department at the University of Maryland at College Park.

Shane Nackerudhas been appointed assistant undergraduate librarian at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Daphne D. Qianwas named systems librarian at D’Youville College in Buffalo, New York.

Renulfo (Rue) Ramirezis now assistant head librarian, Electronic Information Programs Division, at the University of Texas at Austin.

Elizabeth A. Robinsonis now principal rare book cataloger at the Henry E. Huntington Library in San Marino, California.

Kenneth Schlesingerhas been appointed public access librarian at Hostos Community College, City University of New York.

Randall Southeris now assistant reference librarian at the University of San Francisco.

Kristine Stacy-Batesis now engineering and collections reference librarian at the Iowa State University Library.

Ramona H. Thisshas been appointed information services manager at Tompkins-McCaw Library, Virginia Commonwealth University’s health sciences library.

Jian Wanghas been named catalog librarian at the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Mardigian Library.

Shelly Warwickhas joined the faculty of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Queens College, City University of New York.

Retirements

David Curry,head of the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences at the University of Iowa Libraries, retired June 30, 1997, after 21 years in the position. Prior to his appointment at the Hardin Library, he served as engineering librarian and mathematics librarian from 1972 to 1975.

Fred Dugan,cataloger at the University of Texas at Austin, retired May 1, 1997, after more than 35 years of service.

William D. Moritzrecently retired after 31 years of service to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Golda Meir Library. Since 1971, he served as the library’s associate director, with two years as acting director during that time. From 1966 to 1967 he served as interlibrary loan librarian. After that, until 1971, he was administrative assistant to the director.

Nancy Ballard Walshretired after a diverse career including serving for ten years as the library director at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

John Womack,bibliographer for serials, English literature, and economics for the Collections and Information Resources Division at the University of Texas at Austin, retired April 30, 1997, after more than 35 years of service.

Deaths

Lester Eugene Asheim,83, retired William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), died in July. Asheim had also served on the faculty of the Graduate Library School at the University of Chicago, 1948 to 1961 and 1971 to 1974, where he was dean from 1952 to 1961. He directed ALA’s International Relations Office from 1961 to 1966 and its Office for Library Education from 1966 to 1971. In 1975 he joined the faculty of UNC-CH, where he taught until his retirement in 1984. Often cited as his most important work, Asheim’s 1954 article “Not Censorship but Selection” studies the distinction between selection and censorship. Asheim received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Solomon Behar,formerly humanities librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, died unexpectedly in May. He joined the library in 1961 in the Gifts Division of the Acquisitions Department. In 1969 he became head of the Protest Literature Collection, and in 1973 he was a founding member of the Collection Development Office.

Hisayo Murakami,68, program manager of the Gordon W. Prange Collection at the University of Maryland, College Park, died in June after undergoing surgery. Since 1994, Murakami had managed the Prange Collection, a collection of Japanese-language publications for the immediate postwar years (1945-49) of the Allied occupation of Japan. She played key roles during the visits to the Prange Collection by former Japanese prime minister Noboru Takeshita and by Shin-ichiro Ogata, librarian of the National Diet Library of Japan. ■
