Rachael K. Anderson, director of the University of Arizona (UA) Health Sciences Library, has been elected chairperson of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Board of Regents. A member of the Medical Library Association’s Academy of Health Information Professionals, Anderson was also chairperson of the NLM Biomedical Library Review Committee (1987-88). Before joining UA, Anderson was director of Columbia University’s Health Sciences Library.
Kathleen DeLong, education librarian at the University of Alberta (UA), Edmonton, has been elected to a two-year term as director-at-large of the Canadian Association of College and University Libraries (CACUL), a division of the Canadian Library Association. A graduate of UA, DeLong worked for a decade in UA’s Herbert T. Coutts Education Library before being named its head in 1989. She has a long record of service with the Greater Edmonton Library Association, the Library Association of Alberta, and the Bibliographic Committee of the Pacific Northwest Library Association.
Charles R. McClure, professor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies, will serve as the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCIS) distinguished researcher until December 1993. McClure, who began serving in August, will examine the impacts of networking on libraries and information services, and will focus on development of strategies and policies for the effective use of library and information networking capabilities. Reed Reference Publishing, New Providence, New Jersey, has appointed 13 library professionals as members of its Library Advisory Board. Selected for their extensive background and experience, the appointees will serve as advisors, report on the latest industry trends, and offer suggestions on the development of new products and services. Included in the 13 appointees are these college and research librarians: Elizabeth Futas, Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston; Michael Hood, the National Library of Canada, Ottawa; October R. Ivins, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge; Abby Kratz, the University pf Texas at Dallas; Linda L. Lester, the University of Virginia, Charlottesville; Susan Neuman, the University of Pittsburgh; and Louise S.
Robbins, the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Margo Young, science and technology librarian at the University of Alberta (UA), Edmonton, has been elected first vice-president/presidentelect of the Canadian Association of Special Libraries and Information Services, a division of the Canadian Library Association. Young, a graduate of UA and Simmons College, worked in Alberta and British Columbia university libraries before being named to head UA’s Science and Technology Library in 1981. She has served as both president and publications editor of the Western Canadian chapter of the American Society for Information Science.
Appointments
Susan Macall Allen, head of special collections at the libraries of the Claremont Colleges, California, has been named director of library and media services at Kalamazoo College, Michigan. Allen holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and St. John’s College, and is a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has been active in ACRL, especially the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, and in the California Academic and Research Librarians Association, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Society of California Archivists.
Edward D. Gartenhas been appointed dean of libraries and information technologies at the University of Dayton, Ohio.
Daniel Lewishas been named librarian of the Francis Bacon Library of Claremont, California. He previously served as assistant librarian there.
Eugenia V. McKeehas been named director of the Maryville University Library, St. Louis, Missouri. A professor of librarianship at
Maryville, McKee has been with the institution since 1976 and served as interim director of the library during the 1992-93 academic year. Her other professional activities include teaching at the University of Missouri at Columbia, Washington University, and Texas Woman’s University, and she chairs the Continuing Education Committee of the Reference and Adult Services Division of ALA. McKee holds an A.B. from Kenyon College, a B.S. in management from Maryville, an MLS from the University of Missouri at Columbia, and a Ph.D. in library science from Texas Woman’s University.

Daniel Rubeyhas been appointed chief librarian at Lehman College, the City University of
New York, the Bronx. He joined the library in 1985 as reference librarian and has assumed positions of increasing responsibility since then, including acting chief librarian. Rubey holds an MLS and a Ph.D. in English literature from Indiana University, Bloomington.
He has published widely in scholarly literature, art, and film journals.

Robert D. Stueart, dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College, Boston, has been named professor and director of the University Library and the Regional Documentation Centers at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand. He will assume his new responsibilities in July 1994. During the last decade Stueart has consulted for governments and international foundations in many Asian countries, and in 1991-92 was a John F. Ken-nedy international scholar in Thailand. Recently he has been working with the Harvard-Yenching Institute, the Asia Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, and the U.S. Information Agency in developing programs, workshops, and seminars in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Laos, and Vietnam.

Retirements
Marian Armstrong, assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Library and Information
Science, Bloomington, recently retired after 35 years of service. Armstrong has been active in many organizations over the years including the Association of Indiana Media Educators, the Indiana Library Federation, and the Indiana Library Trustees Association. She served as secretary-treasurer of the Chi Chapter of Beta Phi Mu library honorary society from 1979 to 1991 and received its Service Award in 1992.
Tommy Clark, assistant director for user services at Valdosta State University, Georgia, retired June 30 after 27 years of service in Odum Library.
Roman Drazniowsky, curator of the American Geographical Society (AGS) Collection at the Golda Meir Library, University of Wisconsin (UW)-Milwaukee, and editor of Current Geographical Publications, retired July 1 after 31 years of service. A native of Ukraine, Drazniow-sky holds a Ph.D. from Innsbruck University and taught cartography at Columbia University in New York. His association with the AGS dates back to 1962, and he played a vital role in transferring the society’s library and map collections to UW-Milwaukee in 1978. An internationally recognized expert in cartography, Drazniowsky received the AGS’s Charles P. Daly Medal in 1978 and a citation from the Special Library Association’s Geography and Map Division in 1979. He has been an honorary member of the Societe de Geographie (Paris) since 1982.
Shirley F. Harperretired on June 30 from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) at Cornell University where she has served as director of the Martin P. Catherwood Library since 1975. A graduate of the University of Chicago (UC) Graduate Library School, Harper had previously been head of the Industrial Relations Center Library (later the A. G. Bush Library) at UC beginning in 1949. She has been active in the Special Libraries Association serving as the division liaison officer and chairman of the personnel committee. She co-authored, with Thomas L. Whisler, Performance Appraisal: Research and Practice (Holt Rinehart, Winston, 1962); edited the Public Sector Labor Relations Thesaurus (1977); and compiled the ILR Thesaurus (1981).
Elisabeth Janakiev, head of the Catalog Department at Northwestern University (NU), Evanston, Illinois, retired July 16 after almost 40 years of service. Janakiev was born in Switzerland and educated at Gambach College, Raeber College, and the University of Zurich. She joined NU in 1954 as a cataloger, assumed the position of rare book/senior monographic cataloger in 1961, became principal cataloger and assistant head of the Catalog Department in 1970, and has been head of the department since 1989- She recently served as cochair of the NOTIS transition, a mulityear transfer of the library’s NOTIS system from in-house equipment to hardware at the University Computer Center.
