Pam Spiegel

Margaret Harter,head of information services at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Repro- duction, has been awarded the 1995-96 Herbert F. and Virginia White Professional Development Award by the Indiana University Libraries.

The $2,500 award will en- able Harter, who has been involved in online searching for 10 years, to lead a major revision and update of the Kinsey Institute’s unique thesaurus of subject terms, the only comprehen- sive thesaurus of sexuality research. Herbert White was dean of the Indiana School of Li- brary and Information Science from 1980 to 1990.

Michael Shumate,cata- loger in the Special Collec- tions Library at Duke Uni- versity, was named winner of the “Best of the Net 1995” award by America Online for the best literature site (amateur division) on the World Wide Web. Shumate maintains a site for hyper- text fiction called “Hyperi- zons.” The award citation describes the site as being “chock full of resources on postmodern fiction and its computerized cousin, hypertext fiction.” You can explore the site at http://www.duke.edu/ ~mshumate/hyperfic.html.

John V. Richardson Jr.,associate professor in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California- Los Angeles, was one of two fellows for the Association of Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) Russia Project this spring. Richardson lectured at the Moscow Academy of Culture and the St. Petersburg Academy of Culture on the history and teaching of general reference work, the architectural logic of question answering, and knowledge-based or expert systems. The other fellow was Barbara Moran, dean of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina, who lectured on management at the St. Petersburg Academy of Culture.

Charles Schultz,professor and William P. Clements archivist at Texas A&M University, has been named the first recipient of the Irene B. Hoadley professorship in academic librarian- ship there. An archivist who specializes in American maritime history, Schultz will use the $7,000 stipend to complete and publish a manuscript about life on board ships during the 1849 gold rush. At Texas A&M Schultz has served as university archivist (1971–1993) and as Clements archivist, charged with overseeing the papers of former Texas governor William P. Clements. The Hoadley professorship is named to honor former library director Irene B. Hoadley’s two decades of service.

Appointments

Robin B. Fogel

Robin B. Fogelhas been promoted to library director at the State Uni- versity of New York, State College of Optom- etry’s Harold Kohn Vi- sion Science Library. She had served as assistant li- brarian there since 1994. A graduate of Queens College, where she re- ceived her MLS, Fogel is a summa cum laude graduate of the Univer- sity of Connecticut. She formerly served as reference librarian at New York Medical College.

Paul Gherman,director of libraries at Kenyon College, has been named university librarian at Vanderbilt University effective July 1. Gherman’s previous positions include special assistant to the president and director of libraries at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and various positions at Iowa State University, Pennsylvania State University, and Wayne State University. “Paul Gherman is exceptionally knowledgeable about and committed to all aspects of library development, from collections of major works to the most advanced uses of information technology,” said Vanderbilt pro- vost Thomas G. Burish.

John D. Gaboury

John D. Gaboury,dean of libraries at Missis- sippi State University (MSU), Starkville, has been appointed assistant vice- president for library ser- vices and information technology at William Paterson College in New Jersey. Before joining MSU in 1991, Gaboury served as university li- brarian at Radford Uni- versity (1988–1991) and at Northeastern Univer- sity in Chicago (1985– 1988). He also served in library positions at Niagara County Community College, Greenfield Community College, and the University of South Florida, among others. He was cochair of the Mississippi Libraries State- wide Information Network Task Force, and was serving as president of the Mississippi Library Commission’s Advisory Committee when he accepted the position at William Paterson.

Carol Hammond

Carol Hammondhas been appointed direc- tor of the International Business Information Centre at the American Graduate School of Inter- national Management in Glendale, Arizona. She previously served as head of technology sup- port and development; head of library research, development, and exter- nal relations; and head of research and informa- tion access services at Arizona State University West. Before that she held positions at Gonzaga University and UCLA’s College Library. A fre- quent contributor to library literature—including C&RL, C&RL News, and Research Strategies— Hammond currently serves on the Editorial Board of Reference Services Review.

R. N. Sharma

R. N. Sharmahas been appointed director of the Drain Jordan Library at West Virginia State College. He previously served as director of the World Institute of Library and Information Science (U.S. office); director of libraries and associate professor of history at the University of Evansville; assistant director for pub- lic services and collec- tion development at the University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh; head librarian at Pennsylvania State University-Beaver Cam- pus; reference librarian at Colgate University; and assistant librarian at the College of the Ozarks. An active professional, Sharma has chaired and served on many committees of ALA, ACRL, and the Asian/Pacific American Librar- ians Association. He is editor of Library Times International, associate editor of International Leads, and serves on the editorial boards of other library journals.

Dawn Bastianis now head of bibliographic record services at Northwestern University.

Robert L. Byrdhas been named acting university librarian at Duke University.

Carole Bellhas been appointed head of serials and acquisitions services at Northwestern University.

Pam Burtonis now head of the Systems Department at East Carolina University.

Danielle Clarkeis now public services librarian at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Laura Cohenhas been named network services librarian at the University at Albany, State University of New York.

Joan E. Congeris now evening reference librarian at Southwest Texas State University.

Ralph E. Daltonhas been named documents librarian at Southwest Texas State University.

Mary Karen Delmontis now archivist and special collections librarian at Buffalo State College.

Sue Watermanis now resource services librarian for German and Romance languages and literatures at Johns Hopkins University.

Erwin Wodarczakhas been named records analyst/archivist at the University of British Columbia Libraries.

Anna Wuhas been appointed head of public services at the Seeley G. Mudd Science and Engineering Library at Northwestern University.

Patrick Yotthas been named social science data services coordinator at the University of Virginia Library.

Ann Stonehas retired from the Duke University Libraiy after 36 years there, during which she served for 20 years as undergraduate librarian, and 16 years as personnel librarian. An active participant and leader of library personnel groups in ALA, Stone also had a leading role in creating Duke’s Librarians Assembly in 1970, and served as its first president.

Paul A. Zadnerhas retired as associate librarian in the Information Services Department at Buffalo State College. During his 23 years at Butler Library, Zadner also served as head of public access.

Retirements

Bruce K. Andrew,information services librarian and head of readers’ services at Buffalo State College, recently retired after 30 years of service. Andrew was the 1990 recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librari- anship.

Miles M. Jacksonretired in January after 21 years as professor and dean of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Jackson previously served as library director at Hampton University, Atlanta University, and the Free Library of Philadelphia, and territorial librarian in American Samoa. A senior Fulbright professor at the University of Tehran in 1968-69, Jackson served as president of the Association for Library and Information Science Education in 1989-90.

Leszek Karpinskirecently retired from the University of British Columbia (UBC) Libraries after 26 years of service. Karpinski joined UBC in 1969 as a cataloger, then moved to the Humanities Division in 1971 to become reference librarian. In 1985 he assumed responsibility for Western European languages bibliography as well. Jocelyn Godolphin, humanities division head at UBC, called Karpinski “a package of talent that the UBC Library will not see again.”

Sister Martin Joseph Joneshas retired after 26 years of service to Buffalo State College. Jones established the Archives and Special Collections area 20 years ago. In 1987 she received both the President’s and the Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Librarianship.

Deaths

Maud D. Cole,retired keeper of rare books at the New York Public Library (NYPL), died March 8. Before joining the NYPL, Cole served for nine years at the Library of Congress, for one year in the Gifts and Exchanges Department, and thereafter as reference librarian and cataloger of atlases in the Map Division. Active in many professional organizations, including the Special Libraries Association (SLA) and the American Bibliographical Society, Cole served as secretary of ACRL’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Section from 1977 to 1979.

Barbara Hycnar,associate university librarian/head of technical services at Northwestern University’s Law Library since 1980, died January 3. Active on libraiy committees, Hycnar served on the NOTIS Network Advisory Committee, the NOTIS Transition Team and its subgroups, and the Cataloging Policy Committee.

Florence Klemm,retired librarian at the U.S. Air Force Academy Library in Colorado Springs, died in December at the age of 53. A graduate of Harding College and the University of Denver, Klemm served for 25 years as a reference librarian specializing in English, music, foreign languages, philosophy, and fine arts. After her health deteriorated, she was medically retired from government service in 1993, then was honored with the Department of the Air Force’s Award for Exemplary Civilian Service. ■
