Mohammed M. Amanhas resigned from his position as dean of the School of Information Studies (SOIS) at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee (UWM) after 22 years of service. He will continue to work in SOIS as senior professor. Aman was the dean of the Palmer Graduate School of Library and Informa- tion Science at Long Is- land University (1976- 79) and director of the Division of Library and Information Science at St. John’s University (1976- 79) before joining UWM. During his tenure at SOIS, the school has grown to nearly 500 students and 23 faculty and staff, has grown in national and international stat- ure, and has obtained millions of dollars in grants and contracts from local, national, and international funding organizations. Aman has published more than 12 books and nearly 100 articles and technical reports, his most recent publications being Gulf War in World Litera- ture, 1990-2000 and T¡oe Use of the Internet in Libraries and Information Centers. He has also received many awards, including the Award of Appreciation from the Trejo Foster Founda- tion (2001) and the Wisconsin Librarian of the Year (1998) award from the Wisconsin Li- brary Association.
Mohammed M. Aman
Bradley Baker,dean of libraries and learning resources at Northeastern Illinois University, has been named the 2002 recipient of the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Demco Award. The award was created by the Illinois Library Association to recognize and encourage statewide resource sharing and multitype library cooperation.
Candace Benefiel,senior humanities reference librarian at Texas A&M University Libraries, has received the Distinguished Achievement Award in Librarianship from the Association of Former Students.
Judith Bird,member of the State University of New York-Farmingdale staff since 1968, has received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship. Bird was cited for her acquisitions and collection management in the school library. She has worked with the Long Island Resources Council to develop and coordinate acquisitions and share resources with other Long Island, New York, libraries, and she has successfully lobbied for additional funding for SUNY libraries.
William J. Crowe,Spencer Librarian at the University of Kansas (KU), has been named the first recipient of the Gretchen and Gene A. Budig Distinguished Library Award. Crowe joined KU as dean of libraries in 1990, was named vice chancellor for information services in 1996, and served in both capacities until 1999 when he was appointed Spencer Librarian. He also serves as chairman of the board of trustees for OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. Crowe has been a member of ALA since 1971 and has chaired or been a member of various committees in ACRL, the Library Administration and Management Association, and the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services.
Larry Hardesty,library director at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, has been named a distinguished alumni of the University of Nebraska- Kearney (UNK). Hardesty earned a master’s degree in history from UNK in 1971. He was president of ACRL (1999-2000), was named ACRL Academic Research Librarian of the Year (2001), and is serving as chair of the 2003 ACRL National Conference.
Maureen Pastine,Temple University librarian, has received a Fort Hays State University (FHSU) Alumni Achievement Award. She earned a degree Maureen Pastine in English from FHSU in 1967. In 1971 she became reference librarian and later chair of the refer- ence department at the University of Nebraska- Omaha. She worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, San Jose State University, and Southern Methodist Uni- versity, before taking her current position at Temple University in 1997. Pastine earned the second Distinguished Alumni Graduate Library School Award from Emporia State’s School of Library and Information Management.

Helen H. Spaldingwas the featured speaker at the Rededication Ceremony for Booth Library at Eastern Illinois University on September 18. Spalding is ACRL president and associate director of libraries at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Joan Winters,retired systems administrator, and Louise Addis, retired associate librarian, both of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, are the recipients of the Society of American Archivists 2002 Distinguished Service Award. Winters and Addis participated in the working group that created the first Web server in the United States.
Appointments
Michele V. Cloonanhas been appointed dean of the Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Cloonan has been chair of UCLA’s information studies department for five years, has been associate professor since 1995, and has been a faculty member since 1991- Among the professional positions she has held are curator of printed books at Smith College Libraries and preservation librarian at Brown University Libraries. Cloonan has written numerous books and scholarly articles in the fields of preservation and publishing history. She has won awards and honors from the Newberry Library, the Bibliographic Society of America, and the Virginia Center for the Performing Arts. She is the former chair of ALA’s Library History Roundtable and has been a grant reviewer for the National Endowment for the Humanities since the 1980s.

Robert Capuanois the new serials librarian at Washington University-St. Louis.

Deaths
Darrick Hart,30, preservation archivist and assistant conservator at the Arthur E. Holman Jr. Conservatory Laboratory at the University of South Carolina-Columbia, died September 30.
Julieann V. Nilson,whose employment with Indiana University (IU) Libraries spanned four decades, died on October 25 from complications of cancer. She was employed by IU as a cataloger, department head in acquisitions, and most recently as the librarian for Latin American, Iberian, and Chicano-Riqueño Studies. Nilson was a founding member of the Midwest Organization of Libraries for Latin American Studies, and she hosted their annual meeting in Bloomington, Indiana, in 2001. Her professional affiliations include ACRL, Library and Information Technology Association, Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, Indiana Library Association, and the Indiana University Librarians Association. She devoted her recent professional activity to SALALM (Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials). ■
