Ann-Christe Galloway

Carolyn Argentati

Carolyn Argentati,Donald E. Moreland associate director of public services at the North Carolina State University Libraries, has been named a 2003 Frye Leadership Institute Fellow. The Frye Leadership Institute pro- vides an intensive two- week residential program held in early June for fac- ulty, librarians, and uni- versity information technology professionals who aspire to more significant leadership roles.

Bessie King Hahn,Brandeis National Women’s Committee university librarian and assistant provost for libraries at Brandeis University, will be appointed the first university librarian emerita for the university. Hahn has served as university librarian at Brandeis since 1981.

Gail McMillan,director of Digital Library and Archives at Virginia Tech’s (VT) University Libraries, and Anita Puckett, codirector of South Atlantic Humanities Center at VT, have received a $60,000 Virginia Tech ASPIRES grant. The grant will be used to develop locally and distribute regionally state-of-the-art software for creating re- searcher-friendly databases of manuscript and archival finding aids by adapting XML open source technologies.

Appointments

Joan D. Ruellehas been named university librarian at Wyndham Robertson Library at Hollins University. Ruelle previously served as coordinator of user education at the university library and coordinator of user services for the science and engineering libraries at the University of Virginia.

Gary E. Strong,director of the Queens Borough Public Library in New York since 1994, has been appointed UCLA’s university librarian, effective September 1. Prior to joining Queens Borough Public Library, he worked as California State Librarian for 14 years. From 1973 to 1980, Strong served as associate director, director, and deputy state librarian of the Washington State Library. Strong created the California Research Bureau, a public policy research organization.

Laurie L. Thompsonhas been named director of the library at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Thompson was most recently the director of libraries at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University at Syracuse. Her prior experience as a medical librarian includes appointments at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the National Library of Medicine, and Hawaii Medical Library. She has worked as a consultant and instructor and has published extensively on various aspects of health sciences libraries.

Fernando Acosta-Rodriguezis now librarian for Latin American Studies, Latino Studies, and Iberian Peninsular Studies at Princeton University Library.

Duncan Alfordhas been appointed social science reference librarian at Princeton University Library.

Paul Beavershas been named director of information services within the Wayne State University Library System.

Jennifer Blockhas been named interlibrary services/document delivery librarian at the Princeton University Library.

Crystal Galehas been appointed faculty resources reference librarian at Southwest Missouri State University’s Duane G. Meyer Library.

John Hernandezhas been appointed social science reference librarian at the Princeton University Library.

James Knowltonis now catalog librarran at the D’Amour Library at Western New England College in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Amos Lakoshas been appointed head of the UCLA reference and instructional services department.

Heather Moulaisonhas been named a cataloger at Southwest Missouri State University’s Duane G. Meyer Library.

Clayton Reddingis now metadata librarian at the Princeton University Library.

George Thompsonhas been appointed reference/humanities librarian in the Meriam Library at California State University-Chico.

Kyle Winwardhas joined Duane G. Meyer Library at Southwest Missouri State University as assistant collection development librarian.

Retirements

Gale Reeserhas retired after 38 years at the David O. McKay Library at Brigham Young University-Idaho. During his tenure at Brigham Young, Resser did original cataloging and reference work. He also served as the technical services department chair for 17 years and was the library director for five years.

Deaths

Anne M. Buck

Anne M. Buck, 63,university librarian at the California Institute of Technology (CIT), has died. She joined CIT in 1995 after having worked in corporate re- search and academic en- vironments since 1977. From 1991 to 1995 she was university librarian at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where she directed the revitalization of the Van Houten Li- brary and moved into a new four-story facility. Previously she served in several positions at Bellcore (1984-89), a telecommunications research and development consortium, and held several positions at AT&T Bell Laboratories (1977-84). She started her library career in 1974 as the director of the Dunbar

Public Library in West Virginia. Buck was an active member of ALA and the American So- ciety for Information Science. She was vice president of the Engineering Information Foundation and a member of the advisory board for the Carnegie Mellon University Li- braries. She was named Alumna of the Year in 1996 by the University of Kentucky School of Library and Information Science.

Sylvia Murphy Williams,Illinois Library Association president and director of the Dundee Township Library District, has died. Prior to joining the Dundee Township Library District in 1995, Williams worked at the Pa- latine Public Library District (1990-95) and DePaul University (1980-90).

Elizabeth A. Windsor

Elizabeth Arnold Windsor,93, retired head of the reference department at the Iowa State University Li- brary, has died. She had a long career of librar- ian positions in Charles- ton and Rochelle, Illi- nois, and Muskegon, Michigan. Windsor re- tired from Iowa State in 1974. She was a mem- ber of many organiza- tions including ALA, where she was a council member and on the Board of Directors of the Reference and User Services Association; director of the Iowa Library Association (1966- 67); and ACRL. ■
