Marianna Tax Choldin,Mortenson distinguished professor for international library programs and director of the University Library’s Mortenson Center for International Library Programs, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, has been elected vice-president/president-elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. She will serve as vice-president during the 1994 calendar year, president during 1995, and immediate past-president during 1996.

Donald C. Davidson,director of the library at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from 1947 until his retirement in 1977, was honored in September when the university’s board of regents voted to name the library the Donald C. Davidson Library. During his tenure, Donaldson planned and oversaw the construction of more than 260,000 square feet of library space, and took the library from 50,000 volumes to more than 1.3 million. He continues to reside in Santa Barbara today.

Charles H. Davis,dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, from 1979 to 1986, was named professor emeritus on October 1. Davis will continue in his current position as visiting scholar and adjunct professor at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Trudy Huskamp Peterson,acting archivist of the United States, was elected president of the International Conference of the Round Table on Archives (CITRA) at its 29th meeting, held in Mexico City in September. Peterson is both the first American and the first woman to hold that post. As president she will preside over round tables in Greece (1994) and the U.S. (1995) and will serve on the executive committee of the International Council on Archives (ICA). Peterson has served as acting archivist since March 1993 and has been with the National Archives since 1968. She also served as president of the Society for American Archivists from 1990-1991.

M. Rocky Ralebipi,director of library and audiovisual services at the College of St. Catherine, St. Mary’s Campus, St. Paul, Minnesota, has been elected to the board of directors for the James J. Hill Reference Library in St. Paul. An independent, privately endowed institution, the James J. Hill Reference Library provides business information to the public through its collections, including the nationally known James J. Hill and Louis W. Hill papers. Ralebipi will serve a three-year term on the 25-member board.

Appointments

Jean Willoughby Ashton,director of the New-York Historical Society Library, became director of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at

Columbia University at the beginning of September. A librarian at the Historical Society since 1984 and director since 1990, Ashton taught English in the 1970s at Long Island,

Hofstra, and New York universities, and the College of New Rochelle. She graduated from the University of

Michigan in 1959, earned a master’s in English literature at Harvard University in 1961, and a Ph.D. in American literature at Columbia in 1970. She is the author of Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Reference Guide (G. K. Hall: 1976).

John S. Cloustonhas been appointed chief librarian of the Lester A. Wemple Library at King’s College, London, Canada, which is affiliated with the University of Western Ontario.

Tina C. Fuis the new director of library services at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic. Before joining Eastern, Fu served for 24 years in various capacities at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh: as reference librarian, public service librarian, collection development officer, assistant director of public services, and full professor of library information studies. She holds a B.A. in English from National Taiwan Normal University, an M.A. in English from Marquette University, and an MLS and Ph.D. in library science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Paul M. Ghermanrecently assumed duties as director of libraries at Kenyon College in Gambler, Ohio. Gherman is the former special assistant to the vice-president at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University w’here he worked on the Blacksburg Electronic Village Project. He had earlier served as director of libraries at Virginia Tech, as assistant director for administrative services at Iowa State University, and as personnel officer at Pennsylvania State University. A board member of the Online Computer Library Center, Gherman sits on ALA’s Telecommunications Subcommittee, and has served as chair of the Library Administration and Management Association’s Library Organization and Management Section and of the Association of Research Libraries Scholarly Communications Committee. He received his B.A. from Wayne State University and his MLS from from the University of Michigan.

Michael Kellerhas been named director of the Stanford University Libraries, California. Keller has been associate university librarian for collection development at Yale University since 1986. Before that he served as music librarian and senior lecturer in musicology at Cornell University from 1973-81 and head of the Music Library at the University of California-Berkeley from 1981-86. Keller holds a bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College and an M.A. and MLS from the State Universities of New York at Buffalo and Geneseo respectively. He is coauthor with the late Vincent Duckies of the 4th edition of Music Reference and Research Materials (Schirmer/Macmillan, 1988).

John Kondelikis the new director of libraries at Albion College, Albion, Michigan. After receiveing his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida and Florida State University, Kondelik worked at Eckerd College Library for eight years. He then became director of libraries at Olivet College from 1974–81, and the dean of libraries there from 1981–83. In 1984 he was named director of the Irwin Library System at Butler University. A member of ALA, ACRL, and the Association for the Study of Higher Education, Kondelik received his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1993.

J. Philip Mulvaneyhas been named director of libraries at Northern State University, Aberdeen, South Dakota. He previously served as adjunct associate professor of library science at Catholic University of America, collection development and management services librarian at Mary Washington College, and in library-related positions at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Juniata College, and St. John’s University. A member of

ALA and the Association for Library and Information Science Education, Mulvaney earned his bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University, his master’s from the University of Toronto, his MLS from Rutgers University, and his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh.

Lance Query,assistant university librarian for planning and administration, is now dean of the University Libraries at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. Query also serves as professor of library science and teaches Latin-American history. He began his new duties at the end of August.

Trish Ridgeway,head of technical services at the Handley Library in Winchester, Virginia, has been appointed director there. Before joining the Handley Library, Ridgeway was reference librarian and coordinator of bibliographic instruction at the University of Pennsylvania, and head of the Reference Department and Public Services Division at the Winthrop College Library in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Radford College, her MLS from Florida State University, and her master’s in English from Winthrop College. Ridgeway is a member of the Virginia Library Association, ALA, and ACRL. She is the editor of Improving Teaching and Training in Libraries and Improving Reference Management.

Helena Rodrigueshas been named dean of libraries at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. Rodrigues has served as bibliographic control librarian at Roger Williams University, catalog librarian at Brown University, technical services librarian at Rhode Island State Library, and preliminary cataloger at the Library of Congress. She received her B.A. in Spanish/education from Salve Regina University and her M.S. and D.A. in library information science from Simmons College. She is a member of ALA, the New England Library Association, and the American Society for Information Science.

Clarence Toomer,director of library services at Greensboro College since 1988, has been named director of library services at Pembroke State University in Pembroke, North Carolina. Toomer received his B.A. in sociology from Livingstone College, his MLS from North Carolina Central University, and his doctorate in adult and higher education from North Carolina State University at Raleigh.

Thomas Wildinghas been appointed director of libraries at the University of Texas at Arlington. Currently senior associate director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries, Cambridge, Wilding has also served as administrative librarian and assistant to the director at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, Washington. He holds an A.B. in English literature from Georgetown University and an MLS from Simmons College. Professionally active, Wilding was recently elected section chair of an ALA division and was appointed to a Library Administration Management Association Task Force on Leadership Strategies.

Karin Wittenborg,associate university librarian for collection development at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has been appointed university librarian at the University of Virginia’s Alderman Library, Charlottesville. At UCLA Wittenborg also had responsibility for the special collections program and the East Asia Library. Before that, she held positions as chief reference librarian and curator of the social sciences collection at Stanford University. She received her MLS from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her B.A. from Brown University.

Anthony M. Angilettahas been appointed director of collections for the Stanford University Libraries, California.

Lynne U. Turmanhas been appointed manager of information and instructional services at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond.

Teri Weilhas been appointed visiting minority librarian at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Jean Whelanhas been appointed engineering librarian at the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries.

Song Yangis now circulation and computer services librarian at Wheelock College, Boston.

Florence McKennarecently retired as head of the GSPIA/economics librarian at the University of Pittsburgh Libraries.

Eleanor Pinkhamretired July 31 after almost 30 years of service at Kalamazoo College (KC), Michigan. Pinkham joined KC in 1964 and was named library director in 1971. In 1982 she became director of library and media services. She also served as curator of the A.M. Todd Rare Book Room ‘and of the college’s art collection. Pinkham received the Michigan Library Consortium’s Distinguished Service Award in 1982; was elected president of the Michigan Library Association in 1984; was recognized as Michigan’s Librarian of the Year in 1986; and was elected chair of ACRL’s College Libraries Section in 1987.

Donald L. Saporito,director of the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) Libraries, retired October 1, 1993. He joined USL in 1978 from Dartmouth College, where he was chief of processing and automation services. Under his leadership, the USL Libraries implemented an online integrated library automation system (DOBIS), acquired a CD-ROM network, added a third floor to the Dupre Library, and underwent an extensive library expansion project.

Dale Winkelshas retired as Slavic materials cataloging librarian at the University of Pittsburgh Libraries.

Lisa Woohas retired as East Asian librarian at the University of Pittsburgh Libraries.

Deaths

Jane W. Johnson,academic librarian at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, died last April at her home in Richmond. Johnson was an active member of ACRL’s Education and Behavioral Sciences Section (EBSS) and its Social Work/Social Welfare Committee, and worked on the section’s publications. W. Porter Kellam,director emeritus of the University of Georgia (UG) Libraries, Athens, died on August 29. He was 87 years old. Kellam earned a bachelor’s degree from Duke University in 1928, and an MLS from Emory University in 1931. He began his career as a librarian at the University of North Carolina and served as the head librarian at North Carolina State University, West Virginia University, and the University of South Carolina. Following graduate study at the University of Illinois, Kellam was appointed director of libraries at UG in 1950 and stayed in that position until his retirement in 1973. Professionally active, Kellam served as editor of Southeastern Librarian, and president of the Southeastern Library Association, the West Virginia Library Association, and the Georgia Library Association.

Orlin C. Spicer,former librarian at J. Sterling Morton High School and Junior College, Cicero and Berwyn, Illinois, died September 8 at the age of 83. Spicer began his career in 1942 at the University of Missouri (UM), served as librarian at Monticello College from 1943-45, and returned to UM as assistant to the librarian and head of circulation from 1945—47. He was librarian at Illinois Wesleyan University from 1947–51, then served as librarian at Morton for 20 years. A life member of ALA, Spicer was treasurer of the Illinois Library Association and taught as a guest faculty member at the George Peabody and North Carolina Library schools. A graduate of Whitworth College, he also held degrees from Gonzaga University and George Peabody College. ■
