Commission publishes annual report

The 1992/93 Annual Report of the Commission on Preservation and Access, in addition to documenting accomplishments and listing publications, committees, task forces, board members, and staff, also includes a short essay by Commission President Patricia Battin. The essay, “From Preservation to Access—Paradigm for the Future,” presents Battin’s vision of preservation in the virtual library with the thesis that “in the digital world, preservation is access, and access is preservation.”

AMIGOS distributes information on A/V preservation

The AMIGOS Preservation Service (APS) is offering copies of handouts distributed at the May 1993 American Library Association Institute, “The Magnetic Media Challenge: Preservation of Audio Tape & Videotape in Libraries and Archives.” The handouts include two bibliographies, storage and handling recommendations, disaster preparedness guidelines, sample documentation data sheets, and some vendor-supplied materials. APS is also distributing a handout titled “Preservation Basics and Standards for Audio & Video Tapes,” which was developed by its Field Services Officer Ann Massmann.

AMIGOS reports on SAA annual meeting

AMIGOS Preservation Service (APS) is distributing copies of a report on the Annual Meeting of the Society of American Archivists (SAA), which was held in New Orleans from September 1-5, 1993. The report, prepared by APS Field Services Officer Ann Massmann, provides a summary of activities at preservation-related sessions.

Geoscience Information Society publishes papers on preservation

The Geoscience Information Society has published “Preserving Geoscience Imagery” as volume 23 of its Proceedings. The volume contains 19 papers on a variety of topics including digital imagery, photographic collections, preserving high-use geoscience literature, strategies for preserving personal professional photo and slide collections, federal initiatives to preserve images on laser disc, and basic preservation techniques employed at the U.S. Geological Survey Field Records and Photographic Libraries.

ALCTS bylaws fail to pass membership vote

The Executive Board of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) submitted new bylaws to a membership vote in September. The bylaws would have completely reorganized the assocaition, eliminating the present sections and creating divisionwide interest groups and forums. ALCTS announced the results of the vote on November 1. Of the 1,546 votes cast, 35% were in favor of the bylaws and 65% were against. ■
