Pam Spiegel
David Cobb,head of the Harvard University Map Col- lection, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Massachusetts Archives Ad- visory Commission by Will- iam Galvin, Secretary of the Commonwealth.
David Farneth,director of the Weill-Lenya Research Center in New York City, is the new editor of the Music Library Association’s Index/Bibliography Series. Farneth currently edits the Kurt Weill Newsletter, writes a column for Metrobeat, and has written ar- ticles and compiled bibliographies on Kurt Weill and La Monte Young.
Evan Ira Farber
Evan Ira Farber,Earlham College librarian emeritus, was awarded an honorary doctorate of letters by Indiana Uni- versity East in Richmond during commencement ceremonies in May. Dur- ing his 32 years as chief librarian at Earlham, Farber shared the full re- sources of the Earlham library with IU East stu- dents and faculty. He also advised the IU East administration and fac- ulty on building a stu- dent-friendly library when IU East moved to its own campus. Farber served as president of ACRL in 1978–79. He received ACRL’s Aca- demic/Research Librarian of the Year Award in 1980 and the Miriam Dudley Bibliographic In- struction Librarian Award in 1987.
Ernie Ingles,chief librarian and executive director of learning systems at the University of Alberta, has received the 1996 President’s Award of the Library Association of Alberta in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the library community. Ingles was honored particularly for his work in the creation and direction both of the NEOS Library Consortium of more than 20 institutions in the Edmonton area, and of the Alberta Library initiative (a.k.a. Libraries A.S.A.P.), which is working to create the Alberta Library, a multitype li- brary consortium intended to provide equal access to information throughout the Province of Alberta.
Donald A. B. Lindberg,di- rector of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) since 1985, has won a Silver Award from the U.S. Na- tional Commission on Li- braries and Information Sci- ence (NCLIS). As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, the commission chose 25 Silver Award win- ners to honor individuals with noteworthy and sustained contributions to libraries and infor- mation services at the national, state, and/or local levels. Lindberg is recognized as one of the world’s leading figures in biomedical com- munication. His nominator noted that he has led the NLM in improvements that are contrib- uting to faster and more accurate diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illness.
Judith J. Field
Judith J. Field,a senior lecturer in the Wayne State University Library and Information Science Program, was recently elected the 1996-97 president-elect of the Special Libraries Associa- tion (SLA). Field has been a full-time faculty member at Wayne State since 1991. She has been involved in SLA for 24 years, and has held lead- ership positions at both the chapter and division levels. In 1994 she was named an SLA Fellow, one of the association’s highest honors.
Charles R. McClure,distinguished professor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies, was honored in May by the Graduate Alumni of the Rutgers University School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies as the 1996 recipient of its annual Distinguished Alumnus Award. The award cites McClure’s achievements as researcher, educator, scholar, and librarian, and the impact on librarianship of his record of publication, which includes more than 25 books and hundreds of articles, papers, and reports.
Philip Schreur,head of music technical services at Stanford University Music Libraries, is the new editor of the Music Library Association’s Music Cataloging Bulletin. Schreur received the LAUC-D Research Award in 1989; the Ingolf Dahl Memorial Award in Musicology in 1986; a Newberry Library Fellowship in 1984; and a full Fellowship at Stanford University from 1981 to 1985.
Thomas J. Waldhart,professor in the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Kentucky, received the 1996 Helen M. Eckard Award from the Federal-State Cooperative System (FSCS) for Public Library Data, a joint program of the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. The award honors innovative and exemplary uses of national public library statistics. Waldhart was cited for his landmark study “Resource Sharing by Public Libraries,” which was published in the July/August 1995 issue of Public Libraries and responds to Thomas Ballard’s claim that public library expenditures on networking have been a poor investment.
Diane Parr Walker,music librarian and coordinator for the Fine Arts, Music, and Education Libraries at the University of Virginia, is the new vice-president/president-elect of the Music Library Association (MLA). Bonna Boettcher, head of the Music Library and Sound Recordings Archives at Bowling Green State University, is the new executive secretary. And the three new members-at-large are Mimi Tashiro, music bibliographer and assistant head of the Stanford University Music Library; Calvin Elliker, head of the Music Library at the University of Michigan; and Marjorie Hassen, head of the Music Library at the University of Pennsylvania.
Appointments
George M. Needham,executive director of the Public Library Association (PLA), a division of ALA, has been appointed state librarian for Michigan by the Legislative Council. Before join- ing PLA in 1993, Needham served as director of member services for the Ohio Library Asso- ciation (1990–92), director of the Fairfield County District Library in Lancaster, Ohio (1984–89), and in numerous positions with the Charleston County Library in South Carolina (1977–84). He received his B.A. and MLS de- grees from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1976 and 1977. In 1985 he received a certificate in the Advanced Library Manage- ment Program at Miami University in Ohio.
Jane Richards
Jane Richardshas been appointed library di- rector at Wesleyan Col- lege in Macon, Georgia. Before that appointment, she served as administra- tive librarian for automa- tion and technical ser- vices at the DeKalb County Public Library in Georgia; as head of tech- nical services at the At- lanta campus of Mercer University; as head of technical services at Clayton State College; and as catalog librarian at Georgia State University.
William A. Richards
William A. Richardshas been promoted to executive director of in- formation services at Georgia College in Milledgeville due to a re- organization that consoli- dated Computing Ser- vices, Media Services, Libraries, and Institu- tional Planning and Policy Analysis within a new department called Information Services. He has served as director of libraries and information services at Georgia College since last fall. Richards has previously served as library director at North Georgia College (1990–95), director of library and archives at the Atlanta History Center (1984–89), and in several positions at Georgia State University (1979–84). He is currently president of the Society of Georgia Archivists.

Michael Yorkhas been named director of the Susan Colgate Cleveland Library-Learning Center at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire. York most recently served as library director at the University of New Hampshire (UNH)-Manchester. Before that he served as interim university librarian at UNH-Durham, and in library positions at Castleton State College and Ithaca College. Professionally active, York has served as president of the New England Library Association, chair of the New Hampshire State Library Advisory Council, and chair of the New Hampshire College and University Council Libraries Committee.

Retirements
William Abrams,serials cataloger at Portland State University, retired June 30. Abrams had been in charge of serials cataloging since 1962.
Martha J. Baileyrecently retired as professor of library science and life sciences librarian at the Purdue University Libraries after 25 years of service. Before joining Purdue, Bailey worked as a librarian for Union Carbide Corp. and for E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co.
Joan Carrutherswill retire this summer from York University where she has served since 1966 in positions of reference librarian and bibliographer, head of Scott Library reference, and assistant director for Scott Library.
Judith Hardywill retire this summer from York University where she was a member of the original library staff on the Glendon campus. She left the libraries briefly in the ’60s and returned in 1967 to serve as reference librarian and social sciences bibliographer for psychology, so- ciology, and anthropology.
Stanley M. McDonald Jr.retired at the end of May after 25 years as director of library ser- vices at Framingham State College in Massa- chusetts. McDonald began his career in the Concord (MA) Free Library in 1960, then served as reference librarian and assistant director of the Wellesley (MA) Free Library through 1970. He has also pursued a career as a jazz musi- cian and is considered a leading exponent of the late master of the soprano saxophone, Sid- ney Bechet.
Eldon Tamblyn
Eldon Tamblyn,head cataloger at Portland State University’s Branford Price Millar Library since 1967, retired in early June. Tamblyn be- gan his career in 1961 as a cataloger at the Univer- sity of North Carolina, then served as a librar- ian there. In 1962 he joined Duke University as Slavic cataloger, then became head Slavic cata- loger at Stanford Univer- sity in 1964. As head cataloger at Portland State, he guided the Cataloging Section through many major changes, including the adoption of the Western Library network bibliographic utility. Tamblyn voluntarily indexed C&RL and C&RL News for ACRL from 1975 to 1995. In June 1995 the ACRL Board issued a resolution hon- oring Tamblyn’s efforts, saying, in part: “the members of ACRL recognize his significant con- tribution in providing access to C&RL and C&RL News; and express their deepest appreciation for his extraordinary service.”
Deaths
Myrle Bogle,director of library services at San Juan College (SJC) in Farmington, New Mexico, died suddenly in her home in early January. Bogle joined SJC in 1993 after serving at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas. She received her B.A. from the College of Idaho in 1968 and her MLS from Texas Woman’s University in 1988.
Edwin R. Harris,recently appointed dean of library and instructional services at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, died May 16 from heart disease. He was 51. Harris joined Ferris’ staff in 1989 as department head of library systems and operations and served as acting dean since 1994. A member of ALA, Harris was also a member of the American Society for Information Science and the Michigan Library Association.
Arlene Tichy Mosel Thomas,librarian and author of children’s books, died May 15 at the age of 74. A librarian and associate professor emeritus at Case Western Reserve University School of Library Science, Thomas was the author of Tikki Tikki Tembo and The Funny Little Woman, a 1973 winner of the Caldecott Medal for illustrators of children’s books and an honor book in the Hans Christian Andersen international children’s series.
Dennis V. Thomison,associate professor of librarianship and reference librarian at the University of Southern California’s (USC) Doheny Reference Center, died April 12 of AIDS complications. He was 59. Thomison received a B.A. in history from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Clair in 1960 and a Ph.D. in library science from USC in 1973. He was the author of many books including The Black Artist in America: An Index to Reproductions (1991). His ethnic studies Web project (http://www.usc.edu/Library/Ref/ Ethnic/index_old.html), an electronic research site devoted to ethnic America with particular emphasis on Los Angeles, has drawn considerable attention both in America and abroad. ■
