Ann-Christe Young

Jeff Barry,head of systems development, and Stuart Frazer, social sciences reference librarian, were both named Librarian of the Year at Old Dominion University Library. Carole Ray, office services specialist to the administrative services librarian, was named Support Staff Member of the Year.

Cathy Nelson Hartman,of the University of North Texas Libraries, Denton, and Tommie Wingfield, Marie Irwin, Rachel Robbins, and James Stewart, of the University of Texas at Arlington, are the recipients of the 1998 AMIGOS Fellowship Program awards. Hartman received funding for her project Digitizing Historical Publications: Enhancing the Official Electronic Collection of the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. The other recipients received funding for their joint project, Teaming Computing and Library Professionals to Support Distance Learning Students: Looking at University of Texas System Institutions. AMIGOS is one of the nation’s largest library resource sharing networks and consists of over 600 libraries located primarily in the southwestern United States.

Susan Phillipswas elected chair of the Board of Trustees for the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council, Inc. Phillips is currently associate director of Technical and Networked Services at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin General Libraries. She also serves as director of the UT System Digital Library and has been associated with the TexShare Library Resource Sharing Program since 1994.

Wei Chi Poon,Asian American Studies librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, was awarded the Distinguished Lifetime Service Award by the Association for Asian American Studies. She has been recognized for her development of the Asian American Studies Library at Berkeley, for her groundbreaking publications on Asian American Studies collection development (especially A Guide for Establishing Asian American Core Collections), and for her mentorship and guidance of new scholars. Poon received a master’s in librarianship from California State University in San Jose.

Keir Reavie,librarian at Wayne State University’s (WSU) Shiffman Medical Library, was presented the Professional Achievement Award. The award, given by the WSU Academic Staff Professional Development Committee, recognizes demonstrated leadership and significant accomplishments in professional organizations. In the last year, Reavie created, planned, and coordinated a library/ information component within a new required course for first-year medical students. In 1996 he created the first Web site on the WSU campus for the Detroit Community AIDS Library. Nancy Adams, Librarian I at the Shiffman Medical Library at WSU, was presented with an Outstanding Contributor Award. The award recognizes significant accomplishments during 1997-98, emerging leadership/scholarship, and junior academic staff. Adams initiated, developed, and wrote a proposal to the WSU Institute for Chemical Toxicology to develop a training program for primary health care providers to learn to use toxicology and environmental health databases from the National Library of Medicine.

Appointments

Theresa S. Byrdhas been appointed director of libraries at Ohio Wesleyan University. Byrd comes from the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Virginia, where she served as director of the Library, Instructional Support and Media Services, the Media Processing Center, and the Microcomputer Center. Byrd also served as chair of the steering committee of the Virtual Library of Virginia Project. She received a bachelor’s from Shaw University, an MLS from North Carolina Central University, an M.Ed. from Virginia Commonwealth University, and an Ed.D. from the University of Virginia.

Bernard Dumouchelhas been appointed director general for the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI) for the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). Dumouchel has more than 28 years of experience in library services. He joined NRC in 1987, first as director of resource development, where he was responsible for acquisitions, cataloguing, and CISTI’s branch libraries across Canada. In 1993, he assumed responsibility for Document Delivery Services and Electronic Information Services and became director of operations. In 1969, he received his bachelor’s and BLS from the University of Ottowa and an MLS from the University of Western Ontario.

William Maeshas been appointed Dalhousie University (DU) librarian. Maes joins DU after a long career in academic libraries in Western Canada, most recently as director of the Office of Library and Information Services at the University of Regina (UR). A native of Calgary, Alberta, Maes holds a bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, and a master’s degree from the University of Calgary (UC). He earned his MLS from the University of British Columbia in 1975. Maes began his career as a librarian with Parks Canada in Calgary in 1975. After four years he joined the UC as North Studies librarian, followed by an appointment two years later as assistant area head and head of public services with the UC medical library. In 1990 he became university librarian at the UR, and in 1993 his role expanded to include senior administrative responsibility for computing and audiovisual services. He was also involved in the development of the Internet in Saskatchewan and the rest of Canada, serving on the Board of Directors of CANARIE and CANet.

Judy Rudnerhas been hired as director of libraries for Western University (WU) of Health Sciences. She is in charge of WU’s medical libraries, including the Resource Center at WU’s Chico campus. Rudner most recently was administrator of Library Services for First Consulting Group in Long Beach. She also worked as assistant librarian for the Research Library at Baxter Healthcare Corporation, as well as in the biomedical libraries at UCLA and the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Rudner holds an MLS from UCLA and a bachelor’s degree from UCI. She will earn an MBA from UCI in June 1999. She is a member of the Medical Library Association, the American Management Association, and the American Society of Information Science, among others.

Frank R. Allenwas named associate director of administrative services at the University of Central Florida Library in Orlando.

Ven Bascohas been appointed reference librarian at the University of Central Florida Library in Orlando.

Penny Beilehas been appointed reference librarian at the University of Central Florida Library in Orlando.

Navjit Brarhas been appointed assistant dean for Access and Bibliographic Services at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo.

John Gause Jr.has been appointed government documents librarian at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Carl Joneshas been appointed head of the library systems office at the MIT Libraries.

Elisabeth Kaplanhas been appointed collections archivist in the special collections department at Iowa State University Library.

Thomas Kennyhas been appointed associate librarian and head of reference services at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Joan Koliashas been appointed information technology librarian for collection services at the MIT Libraries.

Mary Margaret Lowehas been appointed assistant director of the Ensor Learning Resource Center at Georgetown College.

Nina Davis-Millishas been appointed information technology librarian for public services at the MIT Libraries.

William G. Murrayis the new director of systems services at the university library of the University of South Alabama, Mobile.

Jonathan E. Rothmanhas been appointed senior systems librarian/analyst in the University of Michigan Library Systems Office.

Joan Schuitemahas joined the Cudahy Library of Loyola University in Chicago as head of cataloging.

Karen A. Reiman-Sendihas been appointed social work librarian and manager of the Comprehensive Information Resource Center at the University of Michigan.

Miya Shimadahas been appointed Japanese materials librarian in the University of Michigan Asia Library.

Venta Silinshas been appointed reference librarian at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Susan Stekelhas been appointed archives and information specialist and library liaison for Northern Micrographics, Inc. in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Ju-yen Tenghas been appointed public services and cataloging librarian at the East Asian Library of the University of Washington, Seattle.

Jeff Trzeciakhas been appointed assistant director of Library Information Systems for the Wayne State University Library Systems.

Sheila Yehhas been appointed systems developer for the Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK).

Retirements

Elese Colvinhas retired after 28 years of service from the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). After Colvin came to the United States from Bermuda, she gradu- ated from the Univer- sity of Nebraska in 1969, and joined the staff at UWM Library as Bindery Supervisor that same year. In 1974, she completed her MLS at the University of Mary- land, College Park, and returned to the UWM Library as personnel as- sistant and later as per- sonnel librarian. Since 1990, Colvin has been responsible for administering all levels of the personnel system, including students, academic staff, library faculty, and classified employees.

Elese Colvin

Edmund G. (Ted) Hamann,director of Saw- yer Library at Suffolk University in Boston, retired in June, closing out a professional ca- reer of 42 years. Hamann held positions at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, the University of New Hampshire, Cornell Uni- versity, and Harvard College. Among his fond memories are typ- ing mimeograph stencils for printing catalog cards and listening to quarrels among profes- sional colleagues at the dawn of computer cata- loging about what color subject headings should be. Hamann will keep busy in his new avocation, promoting alternative means of transportation (especially bicycling) as a means of mitigating horrendous traffic congestion in our cities.

Edmund G. Hamannn

Joan M. Hood,director of development and public affairs at the University of Illinois Library Friends at Urbana-Champaign, has retired after 20 years of service. In 1978 Hood was hired half-time as coordinator of Library Friends. Her immediate goal was to change the locally focused group into one with a more national outlook. In 1979 Library Friends made its first nationwide solicitation to 25,000 alumni, which resulted in a doubling of income to $20,000. At the same time, armed with a three-year grant from the Howe Foundation, Library Friends launched “Friendscript” to keep in touch with these do- nors on a regular basis. In 1981 her position be- came full-time when public affairs was added to her duties. Since then, Hood has been in- volved in revamping the annual report, establish- ing the first national committee in 1984, and completing the $4 mil- lion NEH Challenge Grant project. She was a founding member of Friends of the Library USA and Development Officers of Research Academic Libraries. She has been a consultant to many libraries throughout North America as they were setting up their own develop- ment offices, and to libraries in Australia in 1991 and in Russia from 1993 to the present.

Tom Jennings,deputy chief librarian of the Hunter College Libraries at the City Univer- sity of New York, has retired after 25 years of service.

Minja Leehas retired after 27 years of ser- vice at Baruch College Library at the City University of New York.

Marilyn Lutzkerhas retired from the John Jay College Library at the City University of New York.

Jasper G. Schad,dean of libraries at Wichita State University, has retired after 27 years in that position. Prior to that he served at Cali- fornia State University, Northridge, for ten years, holding various positions, including head of collection de- velopment and associ- ate director. Active pro- fessionally, Schad has served ALA and ACRL in a variety of ways, having been chair of ACRL’s Standards and Accreditation Committee, a member of the Choice Editorial Board, the chair of ALA’s Committee on Standards, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Library Administration and Management, and the chair of the Best of LRTS Award Committee.

Deaths

William Clifford Lowe,retired associate director for reference services at the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries, died May 17 from cancer. Lowe graduated from Colgate University in 1952 and received his master’s in 1960 from SUNY-Geneseo. After serving in the Korean War, in 1953 he began working as a research engineer for the Xerox Corporation in Webster, New York. He later served as research librarian for Xerox until 1966. In that year he was employed by North Carolina State University as director of the Technical Information Center at the library. In 1972 he was promoted to assistant director for reference services. He was active in the profession and served as president of the Western New York and North Carolina chapters of the Special Libraries Association. He retired in 1989. Memorials may be made in his name to Hospice of Wake County, 4513 Creedmore Road, Raleigh, NC 27612.

Pat Wilson,electronic resources librarian at Western Carolina University in Cuilowhee, North Carolina, from August 1996-November 1997 died May 18, 1998, after a seven- month battle with cancer. Wilson previously worked as a reference librarian at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland, from 1988-1996 and at Keystone State College in La Plume, Pennsylvania, from 1986-1988. A 1985 graduate of the School of Library Science at Louisiana State University, Wilson worked at the Evansdale Library at West Virginia University in Morgantown prior to her degree.
