Rutgers offers preservation institute
The Professional Development Studies program of the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies at Rutgers University is offering a three-session Preservation Management Institute as a continuing education opportunity. Participants will attend 13 days of classes during one year. Sessions will be held November 16-20, 1998, April 14-16, 1999, and September 27-October 1, 1999, in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Between sessions, participants will develop preservation management and disaster plans specifically designed for the institutions where they work.
Evelyn Frangakis of the National Agricultural Library is the institute’s director and other faculty includes: Meg Bellinger, Preservation Resources, Inc.; Mindell Dubansky, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Debra Hess Norris, University of Delaware; Thomas Parker, Pest Control, Inc.; Steven Puglia, National Archives and Records Administration; Millie Suter, Ocker & Trapp Bindery; and Christine Ward, New York’s Archival Services and Records Administration.
The $1,995 registration fee covers classes, handouts, field trips, lunches, and coffee breaks. Participants representing institutions with strong collections in New Jersey history may be eligible for a scholarship. CCAHA publishes brochure on salvage of photographs
The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) has published Disaster Recovery: Salvaging Photograph Collections by Debra Hess Norris, director of the Winterthur/ University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation. This six-page brochure details recovery options, special considerations and salvage priorities, initial steps before salvage begins, and recommendations for air drying or freezing photographs that have suffered water damage. There is also a chart indicating which salvage method is appropriate for each of the 24 different photographic processes. Although primarily devoted to the salvage of photographs damaged by water, it also mentions damage from smoke and soot. ALCTS publishes audio preservation bibliography
The Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) of the ALA has published Audio Preservation: A Selective Annotated Bibliography and Brief Summary of Current Practices. This bibliography covers general works, media and formats, storage and handling, disaster response, reformatting and re-recording, technical studies, and bibliographies for all types of audio media. NEDCC fall program schedule
The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) is offering three of its popular programs again this fall. “Preserving Diversity Through Photographs” will be held October 7 at the Rhode Island Historical Society in Providence (fee $30). “Reformatting for Preservation in a Digital World: To Film or To Scan” will be held October 27-29 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (fee $250). “School for Scanning: Issues of Preservation and Access for Paper-Based Collections” will be held December 7-9 at Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre in New Orleans (early registration fee $255).
