Ann-Christe Young

Robert Curtis,head of the Maxwell Music Library at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, Bonnie Jo Dopp, curator of Spe- cial Collections in Performing Arts for the Performing Arts Library at the University of Maryland in College Park, and Ned Quist, head librarian of the Arthur Friedheim Library at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, have been elected members-at- large for the Music Library Association.

Leonard Kniffel,editor of the ALA publi- cation American Libraries, was named the recipient of the 1998 Distinguished Alumnus Award for Wayne State University’s Library and Information Science Program. Prior to assuming the editor’s duties in 1996, he served as American Libraries acting editor, managing editor, and associate editor. Before joining American Libraries, Kniffel worked in the main branch and the Down- town Business and For- eign Language Collec- tion of the Detroit Pub- lic Library, where he had experience in liter- ary and community programming. He is a cofounder of the Poetry Resource Center of Michigan and edited its monthly Newsletter and Calendar. Kniffel has also taught workshops and courses on writing at the University of Michigan, Oakland University, and Wayne State. In the 1970s he founded Fallen Angel Press, a small literary publisher.

Deborah Herman-Morgan,assistant head of the Allen Memorial Library at the University of Hartford, Philip Ponella, head of public services for the Sibley Music Library at Eastman School of Music, and Kristina Shanton, a librarian at the music library of the University of Illinois, received the Music Library Association’s (MLA) Walter Gerboth Award. The Gerboth Award is presented to members of the MLA who are in the first five years of their professional library careers to assist research-in-progress in music or music librarianship.

Appointments

Robert L. “Jay” Jordanhas been named president and chief executive officer of OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. in Dublin, Ohio. He is the fourth president in OCLC’s 31-year history, succeeding K. Wayne Smith, who is stepping down after nearly ten years. Jordan previously served as president of new business development for the Information Handling Services (IHS) Group, an international publisher of electronic information databases, in Englewood, Colorado. Jordan has held several key positions during his 23-year career with IHS Group: vice president of U.S. sales; executive vice president of sales and marketing worldwide; president of IHS Engineering; and most recently, president of new business development and president of software, standards and print products. Jordan has served as a director of the Association for Information and Image Management and is currently director of the Information Technology Industry Council, the Information Industry Association, and the Colorado Center for the Book. He has also been active with the Standards Engineering Society, the Standards Publishing Advisory Board, and the 1991 White House Conference on Libraries and Information Services. Jordan graduated with a bachelor’s in English Literature from Colgate University in 1966. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969.

Gloriana St. Clairhas been appointed university librarian at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She joins CMU from Penn State University, where she served as interim dean of the university libraries. She also served as interim associate clean for planning and administrative services for the Paterno/Pattee Library and was asso- ciate dean for informa- tion access services from 1990-96. St. Clair was also the assistant director at Oregon State University and head of acquisitions at Texas A&M University. Currently she is editor of the Journal of Academic Librarianship; previously she served as editor of College and Research Libraries, ACRL’s research journal. She was also a member of the Publications Committee and the board of C&RL News. She currently serves on the ACRL Budget and Finance Committee and was a member of the Ad Hoc Task Force on Redefining Scholarship. She is the secretary/ treasurer of ALA’s Library Research Round Table. She was a board member of the Pennsylvania Academic Libraries Connection Initiative. St. Clair is the author of many articles and editorials.

Drew Beisswengeris the new music cataloger at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield.

Dea Bornemanhas been appointed an assistant professor in the Acquisitions and Collection Development Department of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield.

Beverly Bylhas been named director of university libraries development at Indiana University Libraries in Bloomington.

Christina E. Carteris now head of the reference department in the Zimmerman Library at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Susan Curtishas been named head of the science and main reference departments at the University of Georgia Libraries in Athens.

Paul R. Dempseyhas been appointed head of reference, Loop Campus Library, at the DePaul University Libraries in Chicago.

Charles Eglestonhas been appointed cataloger of medieval and renaissance manuscripts at the Pierpont Morgan Libraiy in New York City.

Diane Garnerhas been appointed social sciences librarian in the Harvard College Library.

Robert Jameshas been appointed circulation librarian for the Walter Clinton Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Judy Kellyhas been appointed director of virtual library design and director of virtual library development for the University of Georgia Libraries in Athens.

Karen Letarteis the new cataloger at Southwest Missouri State University Libraries in Springfield.

Maija M. Lutzhas been appointed librarian of the Tozzer Library at Harvard University.

Mary Ann Mahoneyhas been appointed chemistry librarian for the University of California Library in Berkeley.

Patrick Newellhas been appointed special assistant to the University Librarian for Strategic Projects at the California Digital Library.

John Oberjoins the California Digital Library as the assistant director of education and communications.

Melissa J. Oleenhas been appointed assistant reference librarian at the Walter Clinton Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Tammy Stewarthas been appointed an assistant professor in the Government Documents Department of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield.

Ed Summershas accepted the position as electronic resources cataloger at Old Dominion University Library in Norfolk, Virginia.

Hugh T. Terryis now serials librarian at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

Michelle Turveyhas been named a cataloger at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield.

Jerilyn Veldofhas been appointed distance learning and instruction librarian and faculty liaison at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

Jane Williamshas been appointed director of office planning, research and grants at the University of Maryland Libraries, College Park.

Retirements

Emmy Millsis retiring from the Walter Clinton Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro after 30 years of service. Mills first worked in Jackson Library as a staff member in the circulation department before taking time off to earn her MLS at the University of Illinois, Urbana. She returned to Jackson Library in 1972 as a special collections librarian.

Martha Ransley,head circulation librarian of the Walter Clinton Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), has retired after 32 years. She began her career as a library assistant in the circulation department, left to complete her MLS degree at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, returned as assistant catalog librarian in 1973, and became assistant circulation librarian later that year. She was head circulation librarian from 1991 until her retirement. She served as executive officer of the Academic Cabinet at UNCG from 1984— 86.

Don E. Wood,director of systems and budget services at the Morris Library at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (SIUC), has retired after 28 years of services. Wood joined the SIUC Library as serials librarian in 1970. In 1994 he headed the systems department while continuing his duties as head of the serials department and liaison to the mathematics department. In 1997, Wood was named director for systems and budget services. Before joining SIUC he was head of the serial division, ac- quisition department at Ohio State Univer- sity Libraries. He has been actively involved with the Illinois Li- brary Computer Sys- | terns Organization, and he was the 1997 recipient of SIUC Li- brary Affairs Outstanding Faculty Award.
