Mary E. Edsall, librarian and archivist at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been elected president of the Congress on Research in Dance located on the campus of the State University of New York College at Brockport.

Hal Hall,director of Education and Media Services at the Texas A&M University Library and Irene B. Hoadley/Friends professor, received the Pilgrim Award from the Science Fiction Research Association. He received the award for his lifetime contributions to the academic study of science fiction. He began publishing the annual Science Fiction Book Review Index in 1971 and his Science Fiction and Fantasy Research Index will move to the Internet in a seachable form.

SOLINET has elected the following to its Board of Directors for 2000-02: Jerry W. Stephens, University of Alabama at Birmingham (vice president/president elect); Frances N. Coleman, Mississippi State University; Janice R. Franklin, Alabama State University; Loretta O’Brien-Parham, Hampton University; and John A. Pritchard, Mississippi Library Commission. The following were elected as delegation to the OCLC Users Council: Emma Bradford Perry, Southern University and A&M College; Jennifer Cargill, Louisiana State University; and Jerry W. Stephens, University of Alabama at Birmingham. In addition, the following officers were elected to SOLINET: Rhoda K. Channing (chair), Wake Forest University; Stella Bentley (vice chair), Auburn University; Merryll S. Penson (treasurer), University of Georgia; and Lorraine D. Summers, State Library of Florida.

Appointments

Kristine Brancoliniwas named director of the Indiana University (IU) Digital Library Program. This program is a university-wide collaboration of IU Libraries, the Office of the

Vice President for Information Technology, and academic researchers led by the School of Library and Information Science. The collaboration capitalizes on IU’s extensive holdings of scholarly material to make these available in digital form (see http://www. dlib.indiana.edu/).

Brancolini joined the IU Libraries in 1983 as Media and Reserve librarian in the Undergraduate Library. In 1985 she was appointed librarian for Film Studies and head of Media and Reserve Services. Brancolini joined the IU Digital Library Program in 1997 as chief planner and has served as acting director since 1998.

Frieda Patrick Davisonis now dean of the library at the University of South Carolina, Spartanburg. She was director of library services at Mississippi University for Women from 1993 to 2000. From 1989 to 1993, she served as assistant director for Reader and Technical Services at San Francisco State University. Prior to that position, she served in positions at Columbia University’s Health Sciences Library, East Tennessee State University’s Medical Library, and the University of Kentucky. Her book, The Honαker Family in America, was published in 1998 and she is writing a novel about coal mining in Southwest Virginia.

Charlotte Slocumwas appointed college librarian at Beloit College. Slocum had been head of the technical services department at DePaul University in Chicago. Prior to this position she was acquisitions and collection development librarian at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, for ten years. She has been consultant at a number of institutions and has chaired and participated in numerous professional organizations, primarily in the area of databases and the management of information resources and technology.

Wilbur Stoltis now director of libraries at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

Michelle Beattiehas been appointed clinical medical librarian at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Hi Hua Chuahas joined the staff of the University of South Carolina’s Thomas Cooper Library as electronic government information librarian.

Deborah Clantonhas accepted the position of assistant head of the business library at the University of South Carolina.

Jane Costanzahas been appointed technical services librarian at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Carol Crawfordis the new laboratory director and senior conservator at the University of South Carolina’s Conservation Laboratory.

James D. Foxhas been appointed director of special collections and archives at the University of Oregon.

Ann Hartnesswas named acting head librarian of the Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin.

Phil Hoehnis now the map librarian for the David Rumsey Collection in San Francisco.

Kristina Howardis now manager of access services at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Samir Iskenderovhas been appointed manager of digital support at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Michael Kaminskiis now reference librarian at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Barbara MacAlpineis now reference librarian at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

William G. Murrayhas been appointed head of the automation department at the Nimitz Library of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Maren Niemeierhas been appointed digital services librarian at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

Allison Pirrihas been appointed reference/social sciences librarian in the University of Washington Libraries at the Cascadia Community College/University of Washington Bothell Campus Library.

Deborah P. Robinsonhas been appointed head of the Electronic Resources Program in the Nimitz Library of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Steven Shapirois now electronic resources librarian at Montclair State University in New Jersey.

Todd Spireshas been appointed acquisitions librarian at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Tess Tobinhas been appointed administrative and personnel services librarian in the Ursula C. Schwerin Library at New York City Technical College, CUNY.

William Vincentiis now reference librarian at Montclair State University in New Jersey.

Robert T. (Bob) Wolfkillhas been appointed coordinator of gifts of library materials at the University of Texas at Austin.

Stephen Wynnhas joined Truman State University, in Kirksville, Missouri, as cataloging librarian.

Retirements

Narindar Aggarwal,associate Asian librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, has retired after 36 years of service.

Nancy Anderson,mathematics librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, has retired after 32 years of service.

Madhavaro Balachandran,professor and commerce librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has retired after 28 years of service.

Richard Bopp,assistant map and geography librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has retired after 22 years of service.

Jane Garner,head of Manuscripts and Archival Processing, Benson Latin American Collection, retired after 36 years with the University of Texas at Austin.

Jean Geil,music special collections coordinator at die University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has retired after 29 years of service.

Nelson J. Gilmanhas retired from his position as director of the University of Southern California University Health Sciences Libraries and the Norris Medical Library after 29 years of service.

Marcy Joncich,reference librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has retired after 29 years of service.

Robert Jones,cinema studies and theater librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, has retired after 30 years of service.

Barbara Loomis,assistant engineering librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, has retired after 30 years of service.

Lois Pausch,geology librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has retired after 28 years of service.

Walter Stubbshas retired as the documents librarian/assistant social studies librarian at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), after 32 years of service to Morris Library. Stubbs joined the library’s faculty in 1968 as assistant social studies librarian and became the documents librarian in 1974. He was active on several library committees, the Illinois Documents Coordinating Council, and had given presentations on government publications and the Internet. In 1985, Greenwood Press published his book entitled Congressional Committees, 1789-1982: a Checklist.

Deaths

Alma Bennett,retired head of the Social Science department at the University of Missouri-Columbia (UMC), has died. In 1941, Bennett began working as an extension librarian for Emporia State University. Six years later, she became social science librarian at UMC, later becoming head of the social science department at UMC, and retiring in 1975. She was a member of the ALA.

Jack Dalton,dean of the School of Library Service at Columbia University (1959-70), has died. Dalton began his library career at the University of Virginia, where he was assistant reference librarian (1934—35); reference librarian (1936-42); associate librarian (1942-50); and librarian (1950-56). From 1956 to 1959, he was director of the International Relations Office of ALA, was a member of Council (1964- 68), and was chair of the Ethics Committee. He was director of the Library Development Center at Columbia University (1970-78), which focused on the needs of those who have limited access to library service. In 1954, Dalton received the J. W. Lippincott Medal and was awarded an honorary lifetime membership in the ALA in 1983. ■
