Anne Marie Baker,curator of the Adams Museum in Deadwood, South Dakota, has been selected one of two fellows in archival adminis- tration for 1992-93 by the National Historical Publica- tions and Records Commis- sion. Baker will serve on the administrative staff of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Division of Ar- chives and Research Ser- vices, Madison, and will work on strategic planning for the division, budgeting, and meetings. For her technical project, Baker will formulate plans for using an off-site storage facility for archival collections.
Christine L. Borgman,associate professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, has been elected to the Council on Library Resources Board of Directors. Borgman has held research and analyst positions at OCLC, Chilton Corporation, and the Dallas Public Library. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and received a Fulbright Lecturing/Research Award to Yugoslavia for 1991-92.
William A. Crowe,dean of libraries at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, has been selected as one of three delegates of the Bibliographical Center for Research to the OCLC Users Council. Crowe will serve a three-year term.
Guy Garrison,professor and dean emeritus of Drexel University’s College of Information Studies, was the recipient of the 1992 Beta Phi Mu Award presented by ALA at its Annual Conference in July. The award, $500 and a citation donated by the Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honorary Society, is given for distinguished service in library education.
Frances Lynch,associate director of the Vanderbilt University (VU) Medical Center Library, and Mary Charles Lasater, authorities coordinator in General Technical Services of the Heard Library at VU, were the recipients of the Ida and George Eliot Prize of the Medical Library Association, given for a work published in the preceding year that has been judged most effective in fur- thering medical librarian- ship. The prize-winning ar- ticle, “Government Docu- ments and the Online Cata- log,” appeared in the Janu- ary 1990 issue of the Bulle- tin of the Medical Library Association.
Kris A. White,manuscript librarian and archivist at the Oregon Historical Society in Portland, has been selected one of two fellows in archival admin- istration for 1992-93 by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. She will work at the University of Wyoming’s American Heritage Center in Laramie as a member of the administrative team, and will be involved in personnel supervision, budgeting, planning, and fundraising. For her technical project, White will assist the center with planning for its move to a new archival facility.

Margaret Auerhas been named dean of university libraries at University of Detroit Mercy, including both the McNichols and Outer Drive campuses. A 31-year employee, Auer was formerly director of libraries on the McNichols campus. Auer earned her B.A. from the University of Detroit and her MLS from Wayne State University, which named her 1992 Alumna of the Year. Active in professional organizations, Auer serves on the boards of trustees of the Library of Michigan and the Detroit-area Library Network. She is past-president of the Michigan Library Association, past-chairwoman of the Michigan Library Consortium, and a member of ALA.
Patricia Lyons Basuis now director of the library at Hiram College, Hiram, Ohio. She was formerly head of the Graduate Theology Library at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. Basu’s new appointment began in August.
Gorman L. Duffetthas been appointed director of the Grasselli Library of John Carroll University-, Cleveland, Ohio. He previously served eight years as director of the library at Hiram College and six years as assistant director for public services at Cleveland State University. Duffett received his bachelor’s from Marrietta College, his master’s in history from Stanford University, his MLS from Western Reserve, and his Ph.D. in library science from the University of Pittsburgh. He has served as president of the Academic Library Association of Ohio and as chair of the Academic Libraries Section of the Catholic Library Association.
Marcia J. Myers,associate dean of libraries for administrative services at the University of Ten- nesee (UT), Knoxville, has been named director of libraries at East- ern Kentucky Univer- sity’s Crabbe Library, Richmond. Myers was formerly associate direc- tor of libraries for ad- ministrative services at UT (1981-89), and as- sistant librarian and as- sociate professor at Mi- ami-Dade Community College for 14 years. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Thiel College, her MLS at the University of Pittsburgh, and her doctorate at Florida State University. In her new role she will oversee a $13.3 million renovation and expansion of the library, including 80,000 new square feet and a four-floor addition.

Emma Bradford Perryhas been appointed dean of library and information resources at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Perry has served as university librarian at Dillard University in New Orleans since 1989. Prior to that she served as associate director for administration at the Harvard University Business School; consultant for the State Library of Louisiana; department head at Texas A&M University Library; branch head at the Evanston Public Library, Illinois; and media librarian in the Battle Creek, Michigan, Public School System. Perry earned a B.S. at Grambling State University, an MLS at Atlanta University, and an EdS from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. She is a member of the College and Research Libraries editorial board.
Mary Reichelhas been named university li- brarian at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. She assumed her duties in August. Reichel previously served as as- sistant university librar- ian for central services at the University of Ari- zona and head of refer- ence at Georgia State University. She earned an MLS from the Uni- versity of Denver, an M.S. in economics from the University of Wales, and a Ph.D. in educational administration and supervision from Georgia State University. An active member of ALA, Reichel is currently serving a four-year term as a member of the ALA Council. She has also served as the editor of the “Library Literacy” column in RQ since 1988.

Margaret Wellshas been appointed director of the Oscar Silverman Undergraduate Library at the University of Buffalo (UB), New York. She joined the UB staff in 1986 as an associate librarian then became head of bibliographic instruction and reference there. She recently received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship. A member of ALA, Wells has authored or co-authored several book chapters and professional articles. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree from UB.

Retirements
Robert Breyfogle. head of monographic cataloging and assistant chief of the Catalog Department at Stanford University (SU) Libraries since 1980, retired June 12 after 27 years at the SU Libraries. Breyfogle joined the Libraries in 1965 as a member of the Meyer Library Activation Unit. In 1969 he was transferred to the Catalog Department and assumed responsibilities as the monographic cataloger in linguistics. From 1969 to 1972 he participated in planning for the implementation of BALLOTS, served on the Uniform Titles Committee, and worked on the foreign dissertations reclass project. In 1988 he added to his responsibilities the cataloging of A-V materials and became solely responsible for the cataloging of the Meyer Language Lab materials.
John C. Caldwell, librarian and professor of history at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, retired last spring after a 36-year career in librarianship and teaching. He joined the staff at Augustana in 1975 as head of Denkmann Memorial Library. Before that he served as cataloger and assistant li- brarian at Drew Univer- sity for seven years, librarian at California Lutheran College, and head of technical ser- vices at California State College, Stanislaus. He received a bachelor’s degree from St. Vincent College, a master’s de- gree in American stud- ies from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MLS from Drexel University.
John Caldwell
Gwendolyn S. Cruzat,professor at the University of Michigan (UM) School of Information Studies since 1970, retired on September 1,1992. Cruzat received her B.A. in mathematics from Fisk University, an MLS from Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. in higher education/information science from Wayne State University. She was promoted to associate professor at UM in 1976 and to professor in 1979. She received the Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding contributions to UM and the scholarly community and was elected a director-at-large of the UM Alumni Association. Cruzat has been involved in many professional activities and has served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education, the National Library of Medicine, and the Library of Congress. She also received the Janet Doe Lecturer Award from the Medical Library Association and was named a regent of the National Library of Medicine.
Sally Romer Evans,music librarian at Amherst College, retired on June 30, 1992, after almost 20 years of service. She began her career at Yale University and later held positions at the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, Princeton University, and Oberlin College. She joined the staff at Amherst as a cataloger in 1972. She is a graduate of Oberlin College and received an MLS from Simmons College.
John Hyltoft,conservator of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL) Book Conservation Laboratory (BCD, retired July 1, 1992. Hyltoft established the BCL in 1977 and spent 15 years repairing and rebinding thousands of manuscripts and books. He has been awarded numerous prizes in international bookbinding competitions, published articles on bookbinding and conservation, and is a contributor to SIL’s Book Collecting and the Care of Books (rev. 1992). Hyltoft has curated several exhibitions over the years and has played a crucial role in SIL exhibition programs by ensuring that exhibition designs allow for proper support and housing to safeguard the fragile volumes. He has rescued countless items in SIL collections, and set up an environmental monitoring program throughout the libraries’ 40-some locations.
Deaths
Deborah Perkal Balinsky,former Africana cata- loger at Northwestern University (NU), Evanston, Illinois, died on May 7, 1992. Balinsky joined the Catalog Department at NU in 1978 as a copy cataloger, then served as Africana cataloger from 1982-87. Balinsky combined her library work with completing a Ph.D. in French. She is survived by her husband and two daughters, now four and seven years old.
John Eldridge Frost,librarian emeritus at New York University (NYU) and noted genealogist, died July 23,1992, in York, Maine, at the age of 75. Frost, who was also an Episcopal priest, served as the librarian of the Gould Memorial Library at NYU’s former Heights campus from 1955-72. From 1972-82 he was a member of the NYU library faculty. Frost graduated from the University of Maine in 1938, received a bachelor of sacred theology degree from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University in 1941, an MLS from Columbia University in 1948, a master’s of arts degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1948, and a Ph.D. from NYU in 1953. During World War II he was a chaplain in the navy. A noted genealogist, Frost authored The Nicholas Frost Family, Colonial Village, Sarah OmeJewett, and Maine Genealogy.
Jeanene McNair,a librarian for 27 years at the University of South Florida (USF), died August 1, 1992, in Tampa. McNair received her MLS from Indiana University in 1965. She joined the USF faculty in 1965 as a cataloger, then became head of the Collection Development Department and the library’s first human resources librarian. Her accomplishments include extensive service at the local and national levels of professional librarianship.
Gertrude Coddington Davis Middendorf,librarian at Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, Virginia, from 1957 to 1977, died in Staunton on May 10, 1992.
Thomas G. Narbeth,head of technical services and automation at David Bishop Skillman Library, Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, died of cancer on May 20, 1991, at the age of 42. Narbeth began his library career in 1973 as a member of the reference department at George Washington University. In 1981 he moved to the State University of New York-Binghamton where he held positions in reference and technical services. In 1986 he accepted the position at Lafayette. Narbeth was a member of ALA, ACRL (including the Delaware Valley chapter), and EDUCOM.
Taisa Scors,former librarian at the Library of Science and Medicine of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, died suddenly on July 1, 1992, while on vacation in San Diego. Scors earned her bachelor’s from the Byelorussian State University Medical School in Minsk and her MLS from Rutgers. She worked at Down- state Medical Center before joining Rutgers in 1966 to be head of the Periodicals Department. In 1972 she became biological and medical sciences resource librarian and held that position until her retirement in 1991. She was awarded an honorary appointment as adjunct assistant professor in the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in the Department of Anatomy. ■
