Pam Spiegel

The winners of the Conservation Division of Information Conservation, Inc.’s (ICI) Prize for a Plan 1995 were announced in January. The Special Collections Division at the University of Texas at Ar- lington will receive $3,000 worth of ICI conservation ser- vices for the plan submitted by Shirley Rodnitzky, archi- vist, to preserve the maps and a journal of Henry Washing- ton Benham, an engineer and army officer who fought in the Mexican and U.S. Civil wars. The Milner Li- brary at Illinois State University will receive $1,500 worth of services for the plan submitted by Beth Schobernd, preservation librarian, to repair, deacidify, and encapsulate the posters in the library’s Circus History Collection. And the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University will receive $750 worth of services for the plan submitted by John Bancroft, director of the institute, and Margaret H. Harter, head of in- formation services, to conserve portions of the notebooks of newspaper and magazine clippings that document public reaction to Alfred Kinsey’s research on human sexual behavior.

Gloria S. Werner,university librarian at the University of California at Los Angeles, was elected vice-president/president-elect of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) at its membership meeting in October. Elected to three- year terms on the ARL Board of Directors were: Betty G. Bengston, director of university libraries at the University of Washington; William J. Crowe, dean of libraries at the University of Kansas; and Carole Moore, chief librarian at the University of Toronto.

Appointments

Mary Biggs,formerly dean of the library at Trenton State College (TSC), has been appointed dean of the library and information services at TSC. Her expanded responsibilities include Academic and Administrative Computing; Telecommunications; the Media Center; Institu- tional Research; and Mail- room, Storeroom, and Du- plicating/Printing Services.

Ernie Ingles,library direc- tor at the University of Al- berta (UA) in Edmonton, has been named to the new po- sition of executive director of learning systems at UA. In his new position, Ingles takes responsibility for Computing and Network Services, University Information Enterprises, the University Bookstore, Technical Resource Group, and Print- ing Services; he retains responsibility for the li- brary system, museums, archives, and the Uni- versity Press.

Angie Whaley Le Clercqhas been named di- rector of the Citadel’s Daniel Library. She for- merly held the post of head of user education and assistant to the dean of libraries at the Uni- versity of Tennessee, Knoxville. Le Clercq has written widely on librarianship, especially in the areas of technology and copyright issues. Her most recent work, Life on an Ante-Bellum Low Country Plantation, will be published by the University of South Carolina Press in the fall of this year.

Sarah C. Michalakhas been named director of the Marriott Library at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She previously served at the University of Washington as assistant director of libraries, li- brary development, and planning; head of collec- tion access services and library development; spe- cial assistant to the direc- tor of libraries; and head of the Science Libraries. Before that she served as reference librarian, head of the Bio-Agricultural Library, and chief bibli- ographer for the life sciences at the University of California, Riverside. A member of ALA and ACRL, Michalak served on the ACRL Seattle National Conference Executive Committee.

Jeffrey Barrhas been named rare books and special collections librarian at the University of Florida, Gainesville.

Hugh Blackmerhas been appointed science librarian at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

Judith Brinkhas joined the Kresge Business Administration Library at the University of Michigan as selection coordinator.

Kathleen J. Butlerhas been appointed assistant education and psychology librarian at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Ann Copelandis now half-time assistant original serials cataloger at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Tamara Fetzeris the new acquisitions librarian at Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Jeffrey Franksis now head of reference at the University of Akron.

Nancy Georgehas joined the Salem State College Library as electronic resources librarian.

David Griffithshas been named half-time assistant documents librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Jill M. Hackenberghas been appointed reference/electronic services coordinator in the Sciences and Engineering Library at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Charlotte Hendersonhas been named head of government documents and periodicals at Southern University in Baton Rouge.

Tracey J. Hunterhas been appointed assistant undergraduate librarian Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Robin Hutchinsonis the new serials control/reference librarian at St. Lawrence University.

Barbara Joyceis now science librarian at St. Lawrence University.

Scott Kehoehas been appointed reference and interlibrary loan librarian in the Loeb Library of the Graham School of Design at Harvard University.

Diane Klaiberis now executive director of the New England Law Library Consortium.

Cheryl Kuglerrecently began work as head of the Catalog Department at the University of California, Irvine.

Marta H. Kuszczakhas been named head of the Maps/Government Information Department at Syracuse University.

Marygrace E. McDonaldis now knowledge and consultation services librarian at the Countway Library of Medicine, Harvard University.

Julie Mellbyhas been named assistant curator of the department of Printing and Graphic Arts in the Houghton Library at Harvard University.

Pamela J. Merrimanhas been appointed user education librarian at Syracuse University.

Ammon Ripplehas been appointed reference/public services librarian at the University of Pittsburgh.

Stephen Smithhas been named assistant OCLC catalog librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Timothy E. Thompsonhas been appointed the library director for Syracuse University’s study abroad program in Florence, Italy.

Victoria Shwonek Williamsonhas been named documents librarian/ethnic studies bibliographer at the University of California, San Diego.

Frank Wojcikis now library system manager of the Five Colleges of Ohio consortium’s shared online system.

Sha Li Zhanghas been named head of technical services at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Peter Zhouhas been appointed head of the East Asian Library at the University of Pittsburgh.

Ya’Aquov Zisohas been named technical services librarian at William Paterson College in Wayne, New Jersey.

Retirements

Angela B. Rubinretired at the end of December as assistant humanities librarian at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale after 22 years of service.

Eliska Ryznar,head of Stanford University’s Law Library Catalog Department, retired in January after more than 20 years of service. In addition to working in the Catalog Department, Ryznar is the author of several bibliographies, a specialist translator, a professional indexer, and has contributed entries on the Czech and Slovak Republics to the Encyclopedia Americana.

Deaths

Lianne Schroeder Clark,a former librarian in the Rare Book Department at the University of Chicago, died of brain cancer in January at the age of 65.

Charlotte Jacobson,a retired associate professor and associate librarian at St. Olaf College in Northfìeld, Minnesota, died in December at the age of 86. Jacobson started working at St. Olaf in 1931. During her 43-year career she served as assistant registrar, secretary to the president and to the dean of men, associate professor of English, and associate librarian. She retired from St. Olaf in 1974 and became archivist for the Norwegian-American Historical Association, based at the college. That second career lasted 16 years.

Mary Alice Eggleston Kraehe,retired African bibliographer at the University of Virginia (UV), died last August. In positions at the Universities of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Kentucky, Kraehe developed her expertise in the antiquarian book trade. She moved to UV in 1970 as out- of-print librarian, and subsequently became Af- rican bibliographer until her retirement in 1994. Professionally active, Kraehe held many offices in the African Studies Association’s Africana Li- brarians Council and the Southeastern Regional Seminar in African Studies.

Margaret Kelly Toth,retired head of acqui- sitions at the University of Rochester (UR), died on December 15, 1995. During her 26 years at Rochester, Toth also worked in the areas of special collections and microtext. From 1953 to 1968 she was editor of the UR Press, and served as editor of the ACRL Microcard Series from 1954 to 1966.

John C. Tyson

John C. Tyson,state librarian of Virginia from 1990 to 1994, died in November after a brief illness. He was 44. At the time of his death, Tyson was an associate profes- sor at the Graduate School of Information Sci- ences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He also was president of John Tyson and Associ- ates, a library manage- ment consulting firm specializing in human resource development. Before his appointment as Virginia’s state librarian, Tyson served as university librarian at the University of Richmond (1986–1990), and associate professor and assistant director for planning, administration, and development at Northern Illinois University (1984–1986). A passionate supporter of the library profession, Tyson was a force behind the creation of the Black Caucus of ALA (BCALA). In 1992 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the BCALA for “his leadership and vision in planning the First National Conference of African American Librarians.”

Lucille M. Wert,retired professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), died last August at the age of 76. Wert served as science librarian at Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the State University of Iowa, and UIUC. She retired in 1986 as professor emeritus at UIUC, where she had been on the faculty and in administration. ■
