This cover shows a Ziegfeld Follies set from 1931, designed by modernist architect and theatrical designer Joseph Urban (1872-1933). Born in Austria, Urban moved to the States in 1911 to become art director of the Boston Opera. He moved to New York in 1914, at the request of Florenz Ziegfeld, and began turning out a stream of work for theatrical productions, including the Ziegfeld Follies and the Metropolitan Opera. By the time of his death, he had designed between 500 and 700 stage sets for at least 168 productions, many of which he also directed. The design is part of the Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library's Joseph Urban Collection, which is part of the Brander Matthews Dramatic Museum Collection. The Urban Collection includes approximately 15,000 items, featuring mostly theatrical and movie designs and architectural works.
