Hugh Thompson

Suzanne D. Gyeszly,collection development coordinator for social sciences and preservation at the Sterling C. Evans Library at Texas A&M University, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to Hungary in library science. One of seven Fulbright scholars going to Hungary during fall 1995, Gyeszly will lecture and conduct research on the international and public relations of the National Szcchenyi Library (National Library of Hungary) in Budapest following the political changes of the ’90s.

Thomas Conkling,head of the engineering library at Penn State University, and Bonnie Osif, assistant engineering librarian, were recently presented with the Ei/SLA Engineering Librarian of the Year Award during the annual meeting of the Special Libraries Association. Conkling and Osif were recognized for jointly developing the Three Mile Island 2 Decontamination and Recovery Collection and creating two Internet-accessible databases relating to the Three Mile Island reactor cleanup.

Bonnie Osif

Sharon Hogan,university librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, has received the President’s Recognition Award from the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) for her outstanding accomplishments. Hogan has served on the Executive Board of the ALA and on the Council. She was president of ACRL (198586) and was a cofounder of its Bibliographic Instruction Section. She has been a proponent of minority recruitment to the profession for many years.

David Kaser,distinguished professor emeritus of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Indiana, has received a 1995 Distinguished Service Award from the Chinese American Librarians Association. He was recognized in particular for his impact on Chinese librarianship through his teaching, training, and addressing contemporary issues to library professionals in Taiwan. He has been active in ALA since 1952, serving two terms as councilor and as president of ACRL (1968-69).

Zhuang Shoujing,vicechairman of the Board of the China Society of Library Science and former director of the Beijing University Library (1983-93), received a 1995 Distinguished Service Award from the Chinese American Librarians Association. Zhuang has made outstanding contributions in promoting modern librarianship in China. He was instrumental in starting exchange visits between leading library professionals in Taiwan and the Chinese mainland after his visit to Taiwan in 1993. During his tenure as director of the Beida Library, he established steady relations in exchanging materials with more than 300 institutions in more than 50 countries and districts.

John Spencer Walters,documents librarian at the University of Central Florida, was named the eleventh annual recipient of the Bernard M. Fry Award for the best article to appear in the Journal of Government Information during the preceding year. The prize-winning article, ““Toy’ Presses and the Rise of Fugitive U.S. Government Documents” appeared in the September/October 1994 edition.

Appointments

Johanna E. Bowenhas been selected director of the Library/Learning Resources Center at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California. Bowen has been coordinator for technical services and reference/bibliographer for political science, business, and public policy programs at the State University of New York, College at Cortland. She served as chair of the ALA LITA Library Consortia and Automated Systems Interest Group, was involved in the ALA/ALCTS Creative Ideas in Technical Services Discussion Group, and participated in OCLC activities.

Lucy Cockeis the new director of the McGaw Library at Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky. She previously served for 15 years as director of Eckles Library at Mount Vernon College, Washington, D.C.

Bruce Mortonhas been appointed dean of Libraries at Montana State University, Bozeman. Morton has been at Montana since 1984 when he joined as head of reference service. In 1989 he became the assistant dean for public services and has served as the acting dean since 1993. Previously, Morton had been librarian at Carleton College and Dickenson College. For the last 12 years he has served as associate editor of the Journal of Government Information and was a member of the Depository Library Council to the Public Printer of the United States.

Susan A. Stussyis now library director at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan. She was formerly library director at Barton County Community College, Kansas; Marian College, Indiana; and St. Norbert College, Wisconsin.

Leighann Ayersis now head of the acquisitions/serials division of the University Libraries at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Carol Danner Benfieldhas been named director of development for the University of South Carolina Libraries.

Jeanette Bergeronhas joined the Earth Sciences Resources Institute, an independent institute associated with the University of South Carolina, as librarian/information manager.

Doreen Bradleyis the new information services librarian in the Alfred Taubman Medical Library at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Rick Brewerhas joined the University of Kentucky Medical Center Library as reference librarian.

Rebecca L. Brothershas been named special projects librarian in interlibrary loan/cooperative access services at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Sue Burchhas been named public services librarian at the University of Kentucky Law Library.

Sheila W. Butlerhas been appointed reference librarian at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Jon E. Cawthornejoined the staff of the Knight Library at the University of Oregon as reference librarian/coordinator for outreach services.

Charles Eglestonis the new head of the Cataloging Management Unit at the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries.

Shawn Espositois now reference librarian at the University of Kentucky Law Library.

Dale Fosterhas been named head of special collections at Auburn University, Alabama.

Retirements

Robert Fitzgerald,cataloger of Slavic materials at Northwestern University Library, has retired. Fitzgerald has been active in the Slavic and Eastern European Section of ACRL for many years, chairing the Cyrillic Romanization and Automation Committee for SEES (1979–80).

Leo Hamiltonretired as cataloging librarian at the General Libraries, University of Texas at Austin, after a 35-year career.

T. Mark Hodges,director of the Eskind Biomedical Library at Vanderbilt University, retired in June after 40 years in the profession. Previously, he served with the Sheffield (England) and Brooklyn (New York) public libraries, the libraries at Hamilton and Swarthmore Colleges, and the medical libraries at Harvard and Emory Universities.

Marcia Jebbretired from the Cornell University Library this year. Aside from three years at Temple University, Jebb has been at Cornell since 1962 serving in the Reference Department, as assistant director for public services, and as Anglo-American bibliographer.

Leah K. Nekritzretired as dean of learning resources at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland. Before her appointment to dean in 1991, Nekritz served as director of the learning resources program (1967–91). During her career, Nekritz was active in many state and national organizations, including ACRL’s CJCLS, the AECT affiliate Community College Association for Instruction and Technology, and the Maryland Congress of Academic Library Directors. Sally O’Neal, archives librarian in Odum Library at Valdosta State University, Georgia, retired in June after 26 years of service.

Lorraine Raymond,collection development and catalog librarian at the University of Washington’s Health Science Library and Information Center, retired after 21 years of service. Raymond’s numerous accomplishments include overseeing barcoding of the library’s 300,000-volume collection and managing several large serials review projects.

Leah K. Nekritz

Berry G. Richards,director of University Libraries at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, recently retired. She joined the Lehigh staff in 1969 as associate director in charge of the Mart Science and Engineering Library and was named director of University Libraries in 1978. She received the Nelson A. Rockefeller Distinguished Alumni Award from SUNY-Albany in 1992, and the Paul J. Franz Award in Administration from Lehigh in 1990.

Mary Sengretired as assistant director of Facilities and Support Services at the General Libraries, University of Texas at Austin, after 26 years of service.

John S. Shipmanrecently retired as university bibliographer at Academic Libraries, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Berry G. Richards

Deaths

Anna L. Brackbill,104, who retired in 1955 as chief cataloger at the Franklin & Marshall College Library in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, died in June. Earlier she had worked in the libraries at Union Theological Seminary of New York City, Princeton University, and Yale Divinity School.

J. Dennis Day,director of the Salt Lake City Public Library, died in August. Day was former chair of the Intellectual Freedom Committee, former president of the Freedom to Read Foundation, and former member of the ALA Executive Board. Carolyn E. Jakemandied April 3 in Scarborough, Maine, at the age of 85. Jakeman graduated from Radcliffe College in 1932 and almost immediately thereafter took up her post in the Harvard Libraiy, where she served for nine years in the old Widener Treasure Room and later presided over the Reading Room of the Houghton Library for 35 years. A gifted and devoted librarian, Jakeman once joined a small group of employees who literally labored day and night moving the rare book collection from Widener to its new home in 1941.

Peter C. Mollema Jr.died March 13 at the age of 57. A librarian at California State University, Stanislaus, since 1975, Mollema served first as head of technical services, and most recently as collection development librarian. Previously, he was employed as instructor of English at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, and as librarian at Keene State College, the College of Wooster, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Ohio State University.

Gerald E. Parsons,55, a reference librarian since 1974 at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress, died July 13 of cancer. Parsons, a graduate of Colgate University, wrote extensively about American folklore and hunting and fishing traditions. He was treasurer of the National Council for the Traditional Arts, and a member of Ducks Unlimited and the American Archivists Association.

Herbert L. Searcy,retired professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, died June 5 of complications from hip surgery. As head of technical services at La Crosse, Searcy directed the reclassification and rapid growth of the library collection. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1963.
