This photograph titled "Paula," by Alfred Stieglitz, was revolutionary when it was made in 1889. The image was both a technical and aesthetic accomplishment which foretold of future changes in the way photography would be understood. The image maintains good detail in the highlights and shadows, and demonstrates the beauty that photography can produce. Stieglitz was seeking recognition for photography as equal to painting and sculpture, and acceptance of photographs into museum collections. "Paula" is one of the 1.5 million images in the Photography Collections of the Albin 0. Kuhn Library Gallery at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The collections are a major holding for historical and aesthetic research.
