This photograph titled "Paula," by Alfred Stieglitz, was revolutionary when it was made in 1889. The image was both a technical and aesthetic accomplishment which foretold of future changes in the way photography would be understood. The image maintains good detail in the high­lights and shadows, and demonstrates the beauty that photography can produce. Stieglitz was seek­ing recognition for photography as equal to paint­ing and sculpture, and acceptance of photographs into museum collections. "Paula" is one of the 1.5 million images in the Photography Collec­tions of the Albin 0. Kuhn Library Gallery at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The collections are a major holding for historical and aesthetic research.
