Trudi Bellardo Hahn
Trudi Bellardo Hahn,manager of User Edu- cation Services at the University of Maryland (UM), College Park, and adjunct professor in the College of Information Studies, has been chosen president-elect of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. Prior to her position at UM, Hahn held positions at the Maryland State De- partment of Education, the Special Libraries As- sociation, the Catholic University of America, and the University of
Kentucky. She has also been a consultant for the National Center for Biotechnology Infor- mation, the World Bank, and other govern- ment and private organizations.
University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science faculty members P. Bryan Heidorn and Carole Palmer have received more than $475,000 from the National Science Foundation for research being conducted as part of a project with the Illinois Natural History Survey. The project, “An Internet Environment for BioDiversity Survey Collaboration and Verification," will develop software that those collecting field data for ecology and biodiversity studies can use in the field.
E. J. Josey,emeritus professor of library and information science at the University of Pittsburgh’s (UP) School of Information Sciences, has received the honorary doctorate of humane letters degree from Clarion University. Josey joined UP in 1986 and taught the initial Libraries in Society course for the Department of Library and Information Science. He retired in 1995. Josey has four other honorary degrees, as well as numerous professional, academic, and community honors. He was president of ALA (1984-85) and a member of its council for 30 years, receiving its Joseph W. Lippincott Award. Josey has authored more than 400 articles and has written or edited 12 books on information sci- ences.
Paula T. Kaufman
Paula T. Kaufman,university librarian and professor of library administration at the Uni- versity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), has been elected president of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Prior to being named university librar- ian at UIUC in 1999, Kaufman was dean of libraries at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, for 11 years. She also held several positions at Columbia University, including acting vice president and university librarian. Her experience also includes work in the private sector, dur- ing which she co-founded an information in- dustry service firm. She was elected to the ARL Board in 1997 and is currently chairing the Copyright Group. Kaufman serves on boards for the Center for Research Libraries, the Council on Library and Information Resources, the Re- search Libraries Group, and the Southeastern Library Network, Inc. She chairs the Directors Group of the Committee on Institutional Co- operation.
Norma Kobzina,head of information services at the University of California at Berkeley, has received the Librarians Association of the University of California Berkeley (LAUC- B) Distinguished Librarian Award.
Honora F. Nerz,head of the Burlington Textiles Library and Engineering Services at North Carolina State, and Suzanne T. Weiner, head of collection management at the North Carolina State University, have been named recipients of the 2001 American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference Best Overall Paper award. They won the award, which includes a $3,000 cash prize, for their submission “Information Competencies: A Strategic Approach” (available at http:// www.asee.org/conferences/annual2001/bestpapers.cfm.

Honora F. Nerzand Suzanne T. Weiner
Carlen Ruschoff,director of technical services at the University of Maryland, College Park, has been elected to a three-year term as a Board Member of PALINET, a multitype library network dedicated to the support of resource sharing and technology initiatives throughout Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
Iliana L. Sonntag Blay,San Diego State University librarian emerita, is the recipient of the José Toribio Medina Award, presented by the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM). Sonntag Blay’s book, Twentieth Century Poetry from Spanish America, indexes poetry from Mexico, Central America, and South America (with the exception of Brazil) from turn of the century Modernismo to the present. The award (a certificate and honorarium of $250) is made annually in recognition of outstanding contributions by SALALM members to Latin American Studies.
Arthur P. Young,dean of university libraries at Northern Illinois University, received the Illinois Library Association’s 2001 Academic Librarian of the Year Award.
Appointments
David H. Carlsonhas been named dean of library affairs at Southern Illinois University at
Carbondale. Carlson had been director of librar- ies at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, since 1994. His experience at Bridgewater includes two years as acting as- sistant vice president for academic information resources (1995-97). He was executive director of the Triangle Research Libraries Network in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (1991-94). He was director of the Office of Library Systems, university Libraries, at the University of Lou- isville, Kentucky (1987-91). From 1984 to 1987, Carlson was a systems analyst at the University Library of the University of Rhode Island.
David H. Carlson
Jo Cateshas been appointed director of the Columbia College Chicago Library. She assumes this position following four years at Ernst and Young in Chicago, where she served as regional research manager at the Center for Business Knowledge. She has directed the Transportation Library at Northwestern University and was the head of reference at the Lamont Library of Harvard College and director of the library at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida. Cates is the author of Journalism: A Guide to Reference Literature and numerous articles and reviews.
Lise M. Dyckmanhas been appointed library director at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco.
Ronald H. Epphas been appointed director of the Harry A. B. and Gertrude C. Shapiro Library at Southern New Hampshire University. He had been director of libraries at the University of Hartford since 1993 and developed ALiNUS, an online database of more than 600 academic library newsletters. He held diverse positions with the Council on Connecticut Academic Library Directors. In 1991, ALA published Collection development in college libraries, which he co-edited with Joanne Schneider and William Hannaford Jr. From 1985 to 1989, Epp was managing editor of Choice.
Marilyn Smith Bregolihas been named director of the Annenberg Library of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Previously, Bregoli served as director of the Regina Library at Rivier College in Nashua, New Hampshire, and librarian of the Graduate School of Social Work at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts.
Clarence Toomerhas been appointed dean of library and learning services and professor in the School of Education at Livingston College in Salisbury, North Carolina. He was dean of library and learning resources at Chicago State University (1998-2000). Toomer has been an active member of ALA for 19 years, serving on several committees in ACRL and the Black Caucus of ALA. He served as chair of the College and University section of the North Carolina Library Association (1997-1999).

Retirements
Willis M. (Bill) Hubbardwill retire in June 2002 as library director of Warren Wilson Col- lege in Asheville, North Carolina. A life mem- ber of ALA since 1968, Hubbard served two terms on the ACRL Board, chaired the Col- lege Library Section, served on the C&RL News Editorial Board, and has been a member of many ACRL and ALA committees. He has served as a consultant to nearly 30 colleges and universities and has given programs at ACRL, ALA, CAUSE, Educom, the Coalition for Net- worked information, and other organizations.
Bill (Willis M.) Hubbard
Prior to his position at Warren Wilson College, Hubbard was library director at three other private colleges—most recently Gettysburg College (1983-96).
Deaths
Dan Foley,58, nonbook cataloger/metadata librarian at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee’s (UWM) Golda Meir Library, died November 17 while teaching a class for UWM’s School of Information Studies. From 1982 to 1983, Foley worked as an intern in the UWM Library’s cataloging de- partment. Foley then accepted a professional position at Tulane University’s Howard- Tilton Memorial Library, later taking jobs with Mobil Exploration and Producing, the library at the Xavier University of Louisiana, the Sims Memorial Library at Southeastern Louisiana University, and the Energy and Environmental Information Re- sources Center at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Foley began working as a profes- sional at the UWM Libraries in September 2000.
Dan Foley
James Edmund Maynard,associate professor in library science at The Citadel and a librarian there for 33 years, has died.
George D. Terry,vice provost and dean of libraries at the University of South Carolina (1991-2001), died October 20, 2001. Before assuming the position of dean, Terry served as director of the university’s McKissick Museum and administrator for special projects, including development of an online library system to link the university’s nine campuses. Terry excelled in facilitating the acquisition of notable materials for the libraries’ special collection department. ■
