ACRL candidates for 2002: Learn who’s running for office

Vice-president/President-elect

Tyrone H. Cannonis dean of University Libraries at the University of San Francisco, a position he has held since 1995. From 1991 to 1995, he was senior associate university librarian at Boston College, where he also served as head of the Reference Department (1989-91). He was head of the Social Sciences Division at Oklahoma State University (1988-89).

Among his ACRL activities are service on its Appointments Committee (2000-01); CHOICE editorial board (1995-99); Nominations Committee (1998); ULS Policy and Planning Committee (1989-92); and on the Ninth National Conference Invited Papers Subcommittee (1997-99).

Cannon has been a member of the Black Caucus of ALA since 1981. He has also served ALA on the Standing Council on Minority Concerns and Cultural Diversity (1993-95) and on the Membership Committee (1997-99).

Cannon has also been active at the state and regional level, serving as treasurer of the ACRL New England Board (1995), the ACRL New England Program Planning Committee (1991-92), and on the NELINET Reference Advisory Committee (1993-95). In California, he was on the CAI/PALS Executive Board (1995- 99) and on the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium Executive Board (2001- 01).

Cannon’s other professional memberships include EDUCAUSE (1995-present); American Association for Higher Education (1998- present); National Association of Social Workers (1975-82 and 1999-present); and the Academy of Certified Social Workers (1977-82 and 1999-present).

He was awarded a Title IIB Fellowship in 1980.

John Popko

Cannon earned a bachelor’s of science and a master’s of social work from the University of Connecticut, and a master’s of library science from the University of Pittsburgh.

John Popkohas been university librarian at Seattle University since 1994. Prior to his current position, he was assistant director for technical services at the University of Missouri, Kansas City (1985-94); project director of the Missouri Newspaper Project (1987-93); and head of cataloging at the University of Missouri, Kansas City (1983-85).

His activities in ALA divisions include service on the ACRL Board of Directors and Executive Committee (1999-01), and membership on the ACRL Budget and Finance Committee, where he was chair from 1999 to 2001. Popko was also a member of the Budget and Finance Committee of LAMA’s Library and Organization Management section (1988-92). In LITA, he served on the Board of Directors (1991-92), and was a member of the Program Planning Committee (1992-96) and the Bylaws and Organization Committee (1988- 92), serving as chair from 1991 to 1992.

In state and regional associations, Popko has been Northwest Academic netLibrary Collection co-manager (2000-present). He was president of the Northwest Association of Private Colleges and Universities—Libraries (1996- 97); member of the Steering, Administrative, and Executive Committees of the Washington Statewide Database Licensing Project (1997- present); Pacific Northwest FirstSearch Consortium section coordinator (1997-present); and chair of the Missouri LCSA Advisory Committee (1989-92).

Popko is also a member of OCLC Users Council, where he has served as president (1992-93) and on the Executive and Finance Committees. He was president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, Library Directors Conference (1999-00), and was part of the Missouri State Delegation to the White House Conference on Library and Information Services (1991).

Popko’s honors and awards include Beta Phi Mu (1979); Haggin Fellowship at the University of Kentucky (1977-78); and Phi Kappa Phi (1970). His publications include “Product pricing: A view from technical services administration,” Music OCLC Users Group Newsletter (August 1994); and “Achievement at the Intersection of Libraries and Technology: the OCLC Users Council,” NFAIS Newsletter (October 1993).

Popko received his bachelor of arts from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and his master’s of science in library science from the University of Kentucky.
