Mary Edna Anders,now retired, received one of four Distinguished Alumni Awards from the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Sci- ence at its 60th Anniversary Celebration/Alumni Day on May 1. Anders achieved dis- tinction throughout her 38- year career in both the prac- tice and teaching of li- brarianship. While serving as executive director of the Southeastern State Cooperative Library Survey, she coordinated and inter- preted a statistical study of library service called Libraries and Library Services in the Southeast.
Peter Harris Curtishas been appointed di- rector of library services at Villa Julie College, Stevenson, Maryland. He had previously been curator and head of the Marylandia Department at the University of Maryland at College Park. He holds a B.A. from Oberlin College, an M.A. and Ph.D. in American history from Indiana University, and an MLS from Drexel University. A native of New Jersey, Curtis is a member of ALA, ACRL, the Maryland Library Association, and the Maryland Historical Society.

Evan Ira Farber,Earlham College Librarian since 1962, received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science at its 60th Anniversary Celebration/Alumni Day on May 1. Farber is known in the field as a leading authority on bibliographic instruction. He was named ACRL’s Academic or Research Librarian of the Year in 1980, and received the Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from both St. Lawrence and Susquehanna Universities.
Lucia Johnson Rather,director for cataloging at the Library of Congress from 1976 to 1991, received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina School of Informa- tion and Library Science at its 60th Anniversary Celebra- tion/Alumni Day on May 1, 1992. Rather’s career at LC also encompassed reference services and library systems analysis. She was instrumen- tal in many of LC’s technical services innovations that have occurred in the past 33 years, and continues to con- sult through the Research Libraries Group President’s Commission for Technical Processing in the 1990s.
Tsuyuko Shishido,serials librarian at the Hiroshima Jogakuin College Library in Japan, will be a visiting faculty member and serve an internship in the Department of Reference and Library Instruction at the University of Evansville Libraries, Indiana. A university librarian since 1973, Shishido will study the reference and instruction operations at the university for six months beginning in September, and will participate in collection development, research, library instruction, and reference services.
K. Wayne Smith,president and chief executive officer of OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Ohio, received the honorary doctor of laws degree from Ohio University during commencement ceremonies on June 13. Smith was honored for his contributions to libraries and information access, and in recognition of the historic ties between Ohio University and OCLC. Smith’s 30-year career includes positions in higher education, business, and government, including service as chairman and CEO of World Book, Inc.; group managing partner, Coopers & Lybrand; director of program analysis for the National Security Council; and university professor at Wake Forest University.
Katina P. Strauch,head of collection development at the College of Charleston, South Carolina, received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science at its 60th Anniversary Celebration/Alumni Day on May 1, 1992. Strauch has authored and edited 16 books on a variety of topics, published numerous articles, and made many professional presentations. Ten years ago she organized the first “Charleston Conference: Issues in Book and Serial Acquisitions.”
Appointments
Lynn Scott Cochranehas been named dean for library and learning services at Marymount University, Arlington, Virginia. Since 1984 Cochrane has been em- ployed at the Newman Library of Virginia Poly- technic Institute and State University (VPI/SU) in Blacksburg. She most recently served there as assistant profes- sor and assistant to the university librarian; ear- lier, she was head of user services and ILL li- brarian. From 1980-83 she was ILL librarian at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Cochrane received her MSLS from Catholic University and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in public administration at VPI/SU. She is an active member of ALA and the Virginia Library Association, where she served as president in 1986-87.

Joyce Davis,former associate librarian for ad- ministration at Hollins College, has been ap- pointed director of library services at Catawba College, Salisbury, North Carolina. Davis has served in various ca- pacities at Oklahoma State University Library, Bridgeport (Conn.) Public Library, Ferguson Library in Stamford, Conn., the University of Notre Dame Memorial Library, Connecticut State Library, and Perkins Library and Duke Divinity Library at Duke University. She has also served as manager of library systems support services for Cincinnati Electronics Corp. She holds a bachelor’s degree from William Jewell College, an MLS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master’s of divinity from Duke University.

Sohair Elbaz,former information researcher and librarian at the Center for the Study of Eth- ics and the Profession at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chi- cago, has been named the university’s director of libraries. Elbaz, who has been with IIT since 1988, received her bachelor’s degree in se- mantic languages and a master’s degree in Afri- can languages from Cairo University in Egypt; an MLS from Catholic University of America; and a doctorate in information science from Simmons College.

Peter B. Kaatrudehas been named dean of library services at Lamar University in Port Arthur, Texas. He was most recently associate director of the Eilender Library at Nicholls State University and, before that, associate librarian at the UCLA Graduate School of Management Library. Other positions he’s held include busi- ness/documents spe- cialist at Louisiana State University and informa- tion services librarian at the Walker Management Library of Vanderbilt University. Kaatrude is currently Louisiana Chapter interim president of ACRL and book review editor for the National Librarian. He holds a B.A. from the University of Tennessee, an MLS from Vanderbilt University, and a master’s in public administration from California State University.

Retirements
Joyce J. Bonk,assistant curator of books at the William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, retired January 31, 1991, after 36 years of service.
Joseph C. Cunningham,Latin American materials cataloger at the University of Texas at Austin, retired May 31 after more than 37 years of service.
Robert J. Havlik,engineering librarian at the University Libraries, University of Notre Dame, retired on June 30 after 19 years of service on the library faculty. Havlik began his career at Iowa State College as exchange librarian, then worked as reference/documents librarian at Purdue University, at the Linde Division of Union Carbide, the U.S. Office of Education’s Library Service Bureau, and as library director at Nova University. From 1973 to 1980 he held the position of assistant director for technical services at Notre Dame. An accomplished scholar, Havlik is known locally for his exhib- its which have focused on themes like the Chicago World Fairs, Darwin’s voyage, Halley’s Comet, and extraterres- trial life. Nationally he has earned recognition for his biographical sketches in the St. James Guide to Biography and American National Bi- ography as well as for his major chapters in Magazines for Libraries, Books for College Libraries, and Magazinesfor Young People. A life mem- ber of ALA, ACRL, and SLA, Havlik holds a B.S. from the Illinois Institute of Technology and an M.S. from the University of Illinois.

Guela Johnson,social work librarian at the University of Washington, Seattle, retired in May after more than 22 years in that position.
Deaths
Robert Booth,former director of the Library Science Program at Wayne State University (WSU), died on May 15 at the age of 75. Booth earned his bachelor’s degree from WSU in 1941 and a bachelor’s degree in library science from Columbia University in 1942. He received an MLS from the University of Michigan and a doctorate from Western Reserve University (WRU). In I960 Booth joined the WSU faculty as associate professor of library science, became chairman of the program in 1964, and became the program’s director in 1974. He retired in 1983. Booth also served as a research associate and instructor at WRU from 1956-60, as associate librarian at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1947-56, as reference librarian at the Peabody Institute Library from 1946-47, and as editor and bibliographer at University Microfilms in Ann Arbor from 1944-46.
Booth was an active member of ALA, the Michigan Library Association, Beta Phi Mu, and the American Association of University Professors. He was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Michigan and WRU.
Shirley Hesslein,director of Lockwood Memorial Library at the State University of New York at Buffalo until her retirement in 1984, died in May from pulmonary embolism after undergoing back surgery. Hesslein joined the Health Sciences Library at SUNY-Buffalo in 1969 and became associate director of that library in 1971. She earned tenure in 1975 and received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Li- brarianship in 1976-77.
Marta Lange,head of the Reference Depart- ment at North Carolina State University (NCSU), Raleigh, died June 8 of injuries she received in an automobile accident| on June 7. She was 37 years old. Lange re- ceived her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University, a master’s in Spanish lit- erature from the Uni- versidad de Salamanca, and an MLS from the University of Michigan. She held professional positions at Ferris State University, the University of Houston, and NCSU. An active member of ALA, Lange held responsible positions both with RASD and ACRL, where she was the immediate past-chair of the Law and Political Science Section. A Marta Lange Memorial Book Fund will be established by the Friends of the NCSU Library to purchase books in areas of special interest to Lange. ■
