The brothers opened a photographic studio on the rim of the Grand Canyon in 1902 taking photos of the trail parties into the canyon and taking exploration photos of the canyon to sell to tourists. In 1911 they made a motion picture and still photos of their trip by boat down the Green and Colorado Rivers. Serving as guides, the brothers also worked for the USGS on several river trips. Ellsworth left the canyon in 1924; Emery stayed, making photos until his death in 1976 at the age of 95. The photo is part of the Emery Kolb Collection at Cline Library, Northern Arizona University. The collection includes more than 250,000 photographs and motion pictures dating from 1911.
