UC San Diego develops staff training program

Julie Page, preservation li- brarian, and George Soete, associate university librarian for collections, have devel- oped a new staff preserva- tion orientation program at the University of California, San Diego. The program fo- cuses on the responsibilities of library staff for preserva- tion of the collections and builds basic skills. In addition to the training, responsibility for appropri- ate handling of library materials has been incorporated in all library staff job descriptions. Slightly modified training sessions have been given to library custodians and physical plant administrators and are planned for campus police. Page and Soete have found the program particularly effective and are avail- able at (619) 534-1234 to answer questions about it.

CPA supports EROMM Project

The Commission on Preservation and Access has been recognized by the Bibliotheque Na- tional as an official partner in the preparatory phase of a pilot project to create EROMM, a machine-readable European register of micro- film masters. During the pilot phase, data from the British Library (Great Britain), the Bibliothèque Nationale (France), the Biblioteca Nacional (Portu- gal), and the Staats-und Universitätsbibliothek Gottingen (Germany) will be used to create a UNIMARC-based file. This file is expected to be com- patible with the minimum data requirements for an internation-al register of mi- croform masters currently under development. The EROMM project was initiated by the 12-mem- ber Commission of the European Communities, which will supply 60 percent of the first year’s funding. The CPA will supply the remaining 40 percent, using funds from its Mellon Founda- tion grant for international activities.
