In the News

C&RL Newsis your forum for sharing ideas with academic and research librarians around the country and the world. Perhaps not as immediate as the listserves and discussion groups on the “nets,” it is still a useful, portable, accessible, and permanent way to exchange information. To this end I ask your help.

We rely on you to let us know about what’s happening in your libraries so that we can share the information with the readers of C&RL News. How are you coping with budget cuts? How are you implementing new technologies? What new BI techniques have you invented/discov- ered? Did you have a successful fundraising drive? How are you motivating your staff in these tough times? This is just a brief list of the types of news items we'd like to hear about; the possibilities are endless. It’s easy for you to submit items—you can send them via U.S. mail, fax: (312) 280-7663, or e-mail: U38398® UICVM.uic.edu.

In this issue the impact of electronic publishing is examined by Nancy Eaton, Nancy Elder, and Dennis Dillon- in the report of the University of Texas at Austin’s fourth “The Future of Reference” program. Karyle Butcher and Shirley Scott share ideas for using statistics to manage CD-ROM collections.

We have a report of actions taken by the ACRL Board of Directors at the Annual Conference as well as the first of a two-part report on the many programs ACRL units offered in San Francisco. Part two of the program coverage will be published in the October issue.

Did you know that over $14,000 in cash awards and prizes are available through ACRL’s awards programs? Take a moment to review the possibilities listed on pages 527-532 and then send in your nomination or application.

We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
