Pam Spiegel

Alice Cornell,head of the University of Cincinnati De- partment of Archives and Rare Books, has been ap- pointed by Ohio Governor George Voinovich to the National Museum of Afro- American History and Cul- ture Planning Council as a representative of the Society of American Archivists. Her term will run through Janu- ary 31, 1998.

Cornell has also been ap- pointed by Governor Voinovich to the Ohio Historical Records Preserva- tion Advisory Board. That appointment will run through March 31, 1996.

Appointments

Thomas Peischl,dean of the library at Mankato State university for the past 10 years, has been appointed to the newly created position of dean of aca- demic information ser- vices at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. This ten- ured, full-professor po- sition has responsibility for the library, the Aca- demic Computing Ser- vice, and the campus’ electronic networks. Peischl began his li- brary career at the University of Northern Colorado where he held a series of administrative posts from 1974 to 1979. He then spent five years at the State University of New York at Potsdam College where he was director of the libraries and computer services. Peischl has been active in ACRL for more than 20 years. He served as chair of the Educational and Behavioral Sciences Section (1985-86), on the University Libraries Section’s Steering Com- mittee (1986-89), on the Academic Status Com- mittee (1981-83), and on the Task Force on Organizational Members (1990-92). Currently, Peischl is chair of ACRL’s Budget and Finance Committee (1986-90 and 1991-95), a member of both the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, and is chair of the Poster Ses- sion Subcommittee for ACRL’s Seventh National Conference in Pittsburgh.

Susan Phillips,assistant li- brarian at Ohio University, Chillicothe, for 12 years, has been named as the new di- rector of the Hannah V. McCauley Library at Ohio University, Lancaster.

Patricia E. Sabosik,editor & publisher of Choice magazine, has accepted the new position of vice-president, electronic texts at CMG Information Services in Wilmington, Massachusetts. Sabosik has held the senior management position at Choice for the past ten years. During that time she published 110 issues, stabilized finances, and improved the magazine’s profitability. She established new revenue sources, designed and developed the Choice reviews database, appointed a subscriptions agent for Japan, and negotiated license agreements with Bowker, the CARL Corporation, and SilverPlatter for the electronic distribution of Choice reviews. She has written widely on collection development, document delivery, and electronic publishing. Her editorship ends with the completion of volume 31 and a successful 30th anniversary year. Prior to Choice, Sabosik held marketing and editorial positions at the H. W. Wilson Co. and Baker & Taylor. She holds an MBA in marketing and a certificate of advanced study in finance.

David Bruce Albert Jr.has joined the Montana State University Libraries, Bozeman, as library systems coordinator.

Lucy Barronhas been appointed serials cataloger in Widener Library at Harvard University, Cambridge.

Michele Behrhas joined the Bibliographical Center for Research, Aurora, Colorado, as member services librarian.

Kathryn Bowersis now head of copy cataloging and database management, Law School Library, Harvard University, Cambridge.

Elaine K. Didierhas been appointed associate dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Albert Hallenbergis now serials librarian at Pembroke State University, North Carolina.

Susan Hamburgerhas been appointed manuscripts librarian in the Special Collections Department at Penn State University Libraries.

Regan Whitelaw Harperhas joined the Bibliographical Center for Research, Aurora, Colorado, as member services librarian.

Mary Ann Itogahas been named head of the Original Cataloging Section in the Information Access Services Division of the Penn State University Libraries, University Park.

Mary Beth Kendrickhas been appointed head of reserves and circulation in Hilles Library at Harvard University, Cambridge.

Ruth E. Kiferis now associate director of Learning Resources at the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College.

Katharina Klempererhas been appointed assistant director for systems development in the Harvard University Library, Cambridge.

Jeffrey Kushkowskihas joined the Iowa State University Library, Ames, as business reference and collections librarian.

Anne Marie Laneis now the first curator of rare books at the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming, Laramie.

Merri Beth Lavagninojoined the University of Illinois Library, Urbana-Champaign, as library systems director.

Joachim Martinhas been appointed systems librarian in the Office for Information Systems at Harvard University Library, Cambridge.

Dru W. Moggehas been named the first electronic services coordinator for the Association of Research Libraries, Washington, D.C.

David Nullhas joined the Memorial Library staff at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as head of the Reference Department.

Zorica Oatleyhas been appointed catalog librarian in Library Resource Services at Vanderbilt University, Nashville.

John Oberhas been appointed network resources librarian with Information Systems Instruction & Support at the University of California, Berkeley.

Nancy P. O’Brienis now professor of education and social science librarian at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Mark Parisihas been named librarian of the Center for Science and International Affairs Library at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Cambridge.

Kevin Risnerhas recently been appointed reference librarian at Carlson Library, University of Toledo.

Richard Saundersis now special collections librarian/cataloger at Montana State University Libraries, Bozeman.

Susan Searinghas been named associate director for public services at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Ted D. Smithhas been appointed documents reference librarian at the University of Oregon, Eugene.

Virginia Smyersis now curatorial associate in the University Archives at Harvard University, Cambridge.

Russell Sweethas been named evening services librarian in the Vanderbilt University Law Library, Nashville.

Retirements

Millicent D. Abell,Yale University librarian, will retire August 31, 1994, at the end of the academic year. Appointed in 1985, Abell was the first woman to hold the position of Yale li- brarian, and she is cred- ited with moving the catalog system into the computer age, enhanc- ing technological ser- vices, and helping lead the national effort to preserve some 76 mil- lion books printed be- fore I860. Prior to her arrival at Yale, she served in various positions including univer- sity librarian at the University of California, San Diego; associate director of university libraries at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo; and assistant director of libraries at the University of Washington. A graduate of Colo- rado College in 1956, Abell earned a master’s in personnel administration from Columbia Uni- versity (1958), an MLS from SUNY at Albany (1965), and a master’s in political science from the University of Colorado (1969). She is past- president of both ACRL and ARL, and is past- chair of the Center for Research Libraries Board.

She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of Connecticut Public Broadcasting, Inc., and is a member of the Commission of Preservation and Access.

Judy Harwood,director of undergraduate and instructional services at Southern Illinois University (SIU), Carbondale, since 1992, retired April 30, 1994. After finishing her B.A. in English at the University of North Dakota and her MLS at the University of Illinois (U of I), Harwood worked at the libraries of U of I and Parkland College in Urbana. She joined the Serials Department at SIU in 1969 then became head of the Undergraduate Libraiy in 1971. The Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries named Harwood its Illinois Academic Librarian of the Year in 1992.

Deaths

C. Donald Cook,professor emeritus of library science at the University of Toronto (1969-89), died April 4, 1994, at the age of 71. Cook graduated from the University of Arizona in 1945 and subsequently earned a BLS, MLS, and DLS from Columbia University. He was with the United Nations Library in Geneva (1947-1952), Columbia University School of Library Service (1952- 57), and Columbia University Libraries (1957-69).

George Masterton,former collection development librarian at Wayne State University’s (WSU) Purdy/Kresge Library, Detroit, died recently at the age of 72. Masterton began working at WSU in 1965 as a reference librarian and retired in 1991- In 1978 he received the G. Flint Purdy Memorial Award honoring outstanding contributions to the WSU library system. A lifetime member of ALA, Masterton earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees from WSU, and earned a BLS from the University of California.

Frederick H. Wagman,former director of the University of Michigan (UM) Library, Ann Arbor, and professor emeritus of library science, died March 19 at the age of 81. Wagman joined UM in 1953 as director of the University Library and professor of library science. UM’s Undergraduate Library, built in 1958, “was largely a product of Fred’s imagination,” according to Robert M. Warner, dean emeritus of the UM School of Information and Library Studies. “At that time, there were only one or two such libraries in the country. His idea to create a duplicate of the main library, aimed at undergraduates, was a pioneering venture.” Wagman’s library career began in 1945 when he joined the Library of Congress as acting director of personnel and administrative services. He later served there as assistant director of the Reference Department, director of the Processing Department, deputy chief assistant librarian, and director of administration. He served as president of ALA and the Michigan Library Association, and was named Michigan’s Librarian of the Year in 1970.

Marelia Walker,former head of the Emory University General Libraries’ Book Order Department; died March 9, 1994. Walker joined the General Libraries as an order assistant in 1936. The next year she became head of the Circulation Department and held that position until 1954. She served as head of the Book Order Department (now acquisitions) from 1954 to 1982. In 1980 she received the university’s Thomas Jefferson Award for Distinguished Service to the University. After her formal retirement in 1982, Walker continued to act as a bibliographic consultant to Emory’s director of libraries until she became ill in 1986.
