People in the News

Peter Jacso, associate pro- fessor at Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois, has won the 1993 UMI Excel- lence in Writing Award for his article “Searching for skeletons in the database cupboard.” Published in DATABASE, the two-part article presents techniques to help searchers find data- base errors that could pre- vent them from retrieving accurate search results. Jacso wrote the article while he was a visiting associate professor in the School of Library and Information Studies at the Uni- versity of Hawaii. He received $1,500 and was honored at a banquet hosted by Learned Infor- mation at the Seventeenth International Online Information Meeting.

Howard D. White, professor at Drexel University’s College of Information Studies, has received the 1993 Research Award of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS). The award is given for a systematic program of research beyond the single study that has led to outstanding contributions with a significant and recent impact on the field. White has published on a wide variety of topics including biblio- metrics, citation analysis, social science data archives, and library collection evaluation. In a tribute, ASIS described White as “an articulate spokesman for the quantitative point of view in information science.” White has been at Drexel since 1974.

Appointments

Sharon C. Bonk has been appointed chief librarian of Queens College Libraries, City University of New York. She joins Queens from the University at Albany, State University of New York where she served in many positions since 1978, including assistant director for user services, assistant director for collection development and research services, assistant director for technical services, and head of acquisitions. Before that Bonk held positions in collection development and public ser- vices at Northeastern Univer- sity in Boston. She holds master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York, College at Geneseo. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Associa- tion for Library Collections and Technical Services, as president of the Section on Management of Information Resources and Technology, and council member of the New York Library Association.

Frieda M. Davison is now director of library services at the John Clayton Fant Memorial Li- brary, Mississippi University for Women, Columbus. Davison was tomierlv assistant uni versity librarian for reader and technical services at San Francisco State University. She earned her B.A. in English from Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia, her MLS from the University of Kentucky, and a post master’s advanced certificate from Columbia University, New York.

Ronald H. Eppwas recently named director of libraries and learning resources at the University of Hartford, Connecticut. He had been a professor of philosophy and chair of the University Library Committee there. A graduate of the University of Rochester, Epp earned an MLS from Memphis State University and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He served as managing editor of Choice magazine from 1985-1989, and coedited, with Joanne Hill and William E. Hannaford Jr., the book Collective Development in College Libraries (ALA, 1991).

Susan Grigghas been named librarian/archi- vist at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She most recently served as director of the Sophia Smith Collection and College Archives at Smith College. A graduate of Oberlin College, Grigg holds master’s and Ph.D. degrees in history from the University of Wisconsin, and an MLS from Simmons College. She has also served as curator of the Immigration History Collection at the University of Minnesota, and as archivist at Yale University. She currently serves as a reviewer for the National Endowment for the Humanities and is involved in various committees and boards of the Society of American Archivists.

Frieda M. Davison

John B. Thomasis now dean of college services at the Davie County Campus of Davidson County Community College in Mocksville, North Carolina. He previously served for 22 years as dean of learning resources at Davidson County Community College in Lexington, North Carolina.

Anne Marie Bakerhas been named project archivist at the Williams College Library, Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Michael Basinskihas been appointed assistant librarian/assistant curator for poetry and rare books at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Julie C. Blakehas been named automated public services librarian at Pembroke State University, North Carolina.

Susan Bradyhas been appointed assistant curator of the Harvard Theatre Collection in the Houghton Library, Harvard University.

Linda Brownnow serves as coordinator of collection development at Bowling Green State University, Ohio.

Suzanne Chaneyis now reference librarian in the Reference and Information Services Department at the University of Texas at Austin Libraries.

Flora Cobbis now reference services coordinator in science and technology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Libraries.

Marty Courtoishas been named biological sciences reference librarian at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Lucinda Covert-Vailhas been named director of reference and information services at New York University Libraries, New York City.

Diane E. Donhamhas been named assistant librarian of the Center for Astrophysics Libraries at Harvard University.

Elizabeth A. Dupuisis now a half-time reference and electronic information services librarian and half-time Balcones librarian in the Engineering Library at the University of Texas at Austin.

Ronald Edwardshas been appointed head librarian of the Curriculum Resource Center at Bowling Green State University, Ohio.

Michele Falkowhas been named assistant to the dean of libraries at New York University, New York City.

Mary Anne Foxhas been named cataloging librarian at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

Caroline Gilderson-Duwehas joined the staff of the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as head of the Preservation Department.

Lori Goetschis now head of reference services at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Libraries.

Francis S. Griegohas been named electronic information/reference librarian at the University of Idaho, Moscow.

Susan Hayesis now catalog maintenance librarian at New York University, New York City.

Ann E. Hodgesis now librarian/archivist in the Mexican Archives Project, Benson Latin American Collection, at the University of Texas at Austin Libraries.

Irene M. Hoffmanhas been promoted to director of OCLC Pacific, the OCLC service for Alaska, Hawaii, western Canada, and the western states.

Katherine Holmeswas recently named off- campus services librarian at Lesley College’s Ludcke Library, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Darrell Jenkinshas been appointed social studies librarian at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

Mohammed A. S. Khanwas recently appointed information specialist at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Kuwait.

Wendy Van Wyck Goodnow serves as archivist of the Rush-Williams-Biddle Family Papers at the Rosenbach Museum and Library, Philadelphia.

Donald J. Watershas been appointed associate university librarian at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

Loma Youngis now an original cataloger at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Retirements

Brian Alleyretired as university librarian and dean of library instructional services at Sangamon State University in Springfield, Illinois, in December 1993. Alley joined Sangamon in 1982 after serving in various positions at Miami University, Elmira College, and Portland State University. He is the author of numerous articles and has coauthored four monographs. He is currently editor of Technicalities.

Ruth Baunerretired January 1, 1994, from Southern Illinois University (SIU) Libraries in Carbondale. Bauner earned her MLS from the University of Illinois. She joined SIU in 1956 as assistant education librarian then rose to become head of the Education and Psychology Division. After earning a specialist’s degree and a doctorate, Bauner was twice more promoted at SIU, and since 1969 she has also held a faculty appointment in the College of Education.

Mary Beth Fleischer,assistant archivist at the Center for American History, University of Texas at Austin, retired at the end of August after 32 years of service.

John David Marshall,professor and university bibliographer in the Todd Library at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), Murfreesboro, retired at the end of 1993 after 26 years at the university and 41 years in academic librarianship. Before his appointment at MTSU, Marshall was a member of the library faculties at Clemson University, Auburn University, and the University of Georgia. A 1950 graduate of Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee, he earned an MLS at Florida State University (FSU). He has been active in ALA and ACRL, and has authored or edited 16 books on librarianship. In 1984 Marshall was honored by the Tennessee Library Association with its Frances Neel Cheney Award and in 1992 with its TLA Honor

Award. He also received the 1989 Distinguished Alumni Award from the FSU School of Library and Information Studies, the 1989 Alumni Achievement Award, and a 1992 Distinguished Alumni Service Award from Bethel College.

Alva Stewart,reference librarian at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, retired in October after 13 years in that position. During his 33-year career, Stewart served in seven academic libraries including those at the College of William & Mary and the University of North Carolina (UNC)- Charlotte. He served as library director at Methodist College and N.C. Wesleyan College. Stewart received his MLS from UNC-Chapel Hill and a master’s in political science from Duke University.

Deaths

Nettie Lee Benson,former head librarian of the Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin, died June 23. The collection was renamed the Benson Latin American Collection in Benson’s honor upon her retirement in 1975.

Loda M. Hopkins,former director of the Simmons College Libraries and lecturer in services to adult readers at Simmons, died October 8 at the age of 87. Hopkins graduated from Vassar College in 1927 and received a B.S. in library science from Columbia University in 1930. Most of her career was spent working for the New York Public Library (NYPL), serving in various neighborhood libraries around New York City from 1927-1958. In 1958 she was appointed group specialist of adult services at Donnell Library, and was promoted in 1961 to coordinating librarian there. In 1964 she retired from NYPL and joined Simmons as assistant director of libraries and later director. She retired from Simmons, where she had been a lecturer on and off since 1955, in 1971.

Ralph W. McComb,former university librarian at Penn State University, died July 22. McComb directed the University Libraries from 1946 until his retirement in 1970. A native of Virginia, he earned a bachelor’s degree and MLS from the University of Illinois. He was a member of the executive board and former presi- dent of the Pennsylvania Library Association, which honored him with a distinguished ser- vice award. He was also an ALA Council mem- ber and served as chair of the ACRL Steering Committee.

John P. McDonald,director of university li- braries at the University of Connecticut (UC) from 1963 until his retirement in 1988, died November 13 at the age of 71. McDonald earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in 1946 and an MLS from Drexel Uni- versity in 1951. He worked in the libraries at the University of Pennsylvania and Washington University in St. Louis before join- ing UC. He served as president of the Association of Research Librar- ies (ARL) from 1971-1972 and as executive di- rector of ARL from 1974-1976 while on leave from UC. An officer in ALA and the Connecti- cut Library Association, McDonald also served on the Boards of the Public Affairs Information Service (PAIS) and the H. W. Wilson Company. He received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Drexel in 1975 and was awarded an hon- orary doctor of law degree from Wesleyan University in 1986.

Harriet Molenaer,former rare materials cataloger at the University of Texas at Austin, died June 13, 1993.
