OMS publishes manual

The Office of Management Services (OMS) of the Asso- ciation of Research Libraries (ARL) has published Collec- tion Conservation Treatment:

A Resource Manual for Pro- gram Development and Con- servation Technician Train- ing.The 452-page manual contains instructions for more than 100 conservation treat- ments, floorplans, and fur- nishing/equipment lists for conservation laboratories, flow charts, and decision trees for conserva- tion decision-making, plus a bibliography. The manual was developed by the 42 collections conservators and preservation administrators who attended the 1992 “Training the Trainers: A Conference on Training in Collection Con- servation” and compiled by Maralyn Jonec, as- sistant head of the Conservation Department at the University of California, Berkeley.

ALA publishes resource packet

The Joint Committee on Government Documents as Rare Books of ALA’s RBMS/GODORT/ MAGERT (Rare Books and Manuscripts Section/ Government Documents Round Table/Map and Geography Round Table) has published Rare and Valuable Government Documents; A Resource Packet on Identification, Preservation, and Security Issues for Government Documents Collections. The packet comprises previously published materials on the identification of rare documents and the preservation techniques which may be used to protect them. Free copies of the packet were distributed by the Government Printing Office in May 1993 to all depository libraries. Edited by Jim Walsh, Barbara Hulyk, and George Barnum, this publication represents noteworthy cooperation among numerous organizations and publishers.

TAM publishes disaster manual

The Disaster Assistance Net- work Committee of the

Texas Association of Museums (TAM) has pub- lished a disaster preparedness manual called PREP (Planning for Response and Emergency Preparedness). It provides 300 pages of intro- ductory material, bibliographical references, and appendices in a loose-leaf binder. The appen- dices are extensive and include disaster plans from two museums and one university library, resource lists, and sample forms for disaster- related tasks. Among the samples are a disas- ter vulnerability assessment form, a standard facilities protection checklist, a staff list and disaster responsibility form, an emergency funds sheet, a collection damage form, a collection priorities guide, a bomb threat checklist, and an accident investigation form.

CENTRO publishes results of project

The Central New York Library Resources Council (CENTRO) has published Preservation Needs Assessment: A Management Tool, a description and the results of a needs assessment project begun in August 1992. Staff from ten libraries and historical societies in the central New York region were trained in collection sampling techniques and use of CALIPR assessment software, which were then used to determine preservation needs. The participants and CENTRO have utilized this information to set institutional and regional preservation priorities.
