Amy E. Arnold,collection development librarian for Auburn University at Mont- gomery, Alabama, was pre- sented the Blackwell North America Research Award for her paper “Approval Slips and Faculty Participation in Book Selection." The award is funded by Blackwell and presented annually by the College, University, and Spe- cial Libraries Division of the Alabama Library Association to encourage and support research with potential significance for academic libraries. Arnold holds an MLS from the Uni- versity of Alabama, a master’s of sacred music from Wittenberg University, and a bachelor of arts from Huntingdon College.

Patricia Battin,president of the Commission on Preservation and Access, received the honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Emory University at its commencement ceremonies in May. She was honored for developing a coordinated national approach to counter the deterioration and disintegration of millions of library volumes and for marshaling congressional appropriations to support the endeavor. She became the commission’s first president in 1987 after serving nine years as vice-president for information services and university librarian at Columbia University.

Joanne G. Marshall,associate professor at the Faculty of Library and Information Science, University of Toronto, has been honored by two professional organizations. On May 13 Marshall was presented the Member of the Year Award from the Special Libraries Association- Toronto Chapter for her work on the impact of special librarians on corporate decision-making. She also received the Ida and George Eliot Prize from the Medical Library Association for her publication “The Impact of the Hospital Library on Clinical Decision-Making: The Rochester Study.”

Linda Thornton,interlibrary loan librarian for Auburn University, has received the EBSCO Research Award for her paper “Interlibrary Loan Workload and Staffing.” The award is funded by EBSCO and presented annually by the College, University, and Special Li- braries Division of the Ala- bama Library Association to encourage and support re- search with potential signifi- cance for academic libraries. Thornton earned her MLS from Clarion University.

Dorothy Woodson,librar- ian at Lockwood Library, State University of New York at Buffalo, received a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award for the 1993/94 academic year. Woodson, whose award is within the African Regional Research Program, will conduct research and assist in the organi- zation of recently unbanned historical manu- scripts, archives, and newspapers located at the Mayibuye History Centre at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa. Woodson is the author of Drum: An Index to Africa’s leading Magazine, 1951-1965and De- cade of Discontent: An Index to “Fighting Talk" 1954-1963-

Valerie R. Hotchkiss,library director at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary since 1989, has been named director of the Bridwell Library at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology. Hotchkiss holds a Ph.D. in medieval studies from Yale University, an MLS from Southern Connecticut State University, and a B.A. in classical languages from the University of Cincinnati. Active in the American Theological Library Association, she is now serving on its education committee and as chair of the Collection Evaluation and Development Section. She is also a founding member and president-elect of the Southwest Ameri- can Theological Library Association.

Richard J. Kuhta

Richard J. Kuhta,university librarian at St. Lawrence University since 1986, has been named librarian of the Folger Shakespeare Li- brary in Washington, D.C. Kuhta is a gradu- ate of Swarthmore Col- lege, with an M.A. in Shakespeare studies from the Shakespeare Institute in Birming- ham, England, and an MLS from Columbia University. His new duties will begin in February 1994.

Gerald R. Lowell,associate university librarian and director for technical services at Yale University since 1986, was appointed university librarian at the University of California, San Diego. He assumed his new duties April 1. Prior to joining Yale, Lowell served as head of the Cataloging Distribution Service at the Library of Congress, as a vice-president of the Faxon Company, and on the staff of the University of Washington Libraries in Seattle. He received his B.A. in Russian area studies from Gustavus Adolphus College and his MLS from the University of Washington.

Richard W. Oram,public services librarian at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin, has been appointed librarian of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at UT.

Karin Wittenborg,associate university librarian for collection development at the University of California, Los Angeles, has been named university librarian for the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Wittenborg received her MLS from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her bachelor of arts from Brown University. She has served at Stanford University as chief reference librarian and as curator of the social sciences. She was also a Council on Library Resources academic library management intern at MIT in 1981-82.

Vicky Adamitisis now preservation officer at the University of Maryland at College Park Libraries.

Nadine Baldwinhas been named assistant university librarian for technical services at the University of British Columbia.

Janet Borronis now reference librarian at the Loop Campus Library of DePaul University, Chicago.

David J. Brierhas been appointed UHCARL technical support librarian at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu.

Marsha Carothersis now half-time assistant dental librarian at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Rick L. Castrohas been named cataloging librarian at the University of Guam, Mangilao.

Tom Connorshas been named curator of the National Public Broadcasting Archives at the University of Maryland at College Park Libraries.

Leesa Dubyhas been named the Miller Nichols Library head of access services at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Laura Gayle Greenis the new music/me- dia librarian at the University Missouri-Kansas City.

Jon G. Grennanis now rare book catalog librarian at Washington University, St. Louis.

E. Jens Holleyis now head of access services at Clemson University, South Carolina.

Helen B. Josephinehas been appointed associate director of the Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.

Lee P. Keenehas been named access services librarian in the Florida International University Libraries at North Miami Campus.

Veronica Kenausisis now reference and instruction librarian at Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Joan M. Sibleyis now assistant department head of the Department of Manuscripts and Archives at the University of Texas at Austin.

Joanne Tarpleyis now reference librarian at the University of Guam, Mangilao.

P. Steven Thomashas been named instructional services librarian at Sangamon State University, Springfield, Illinois.

Jacqueline M. Vargohas been named UHCARL technical support librarian at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu.

Nancy S. Weyanthas been appointed coordinator of reference services at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

Deaths

Frank C. Campbell,chief of the Music Division of the New York Public Library (NYPL) at Lincoln Center until his retirement in 1985, died June 12 at the age of 76. Campbell began his career as a music cataloger at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, then spent 16 years as a music librarian at the Library of Congress. He began his association with NYPL in 1959- A member and past-president of the Music Library Association, Campbell also edited the journal Notes from 1971-1974, taught music history at Washington’s American University, and was music critic for the Washington Evening Star from 1953-1959- A graduate of Salem College in North Carolina, Campbell received his master’s degree in music from the Eastman School of Music.

Laura Dawn Pohlman,a former librarian at the New York Public Library, died on May 28 in Virginia Beach. Pohlman began working as a librarian in the Branch Libraries in the early 1940s. After leaving to join the U.S. Navy during World War II, she returned to the staff of the Reference Department Science Division where she advanced to the position of assistant chief. Later, in her dual capacity as chief of the Cooperative Services Department and assistant director of METRO, Pohlman was active in promoting cooperative programs among libraries through the CARES program and the Research Libraries Group. She retired in 1979.

Judith Thiele,reference librarian at the University of British Columbia (UBC) since 1972, died on April 27 at the age of 49. Thiele earned her B.A. and BLS from UBC, and cofounded with her husband Paul the Crane Memorial Library at UBC in 1968. She was internationally recognized as an information, technology, and braille expert; taught in UBC’s faculty of education; and received the Canada 125 award from the Canadian government in recognition of her contributions to the community.

David L. Thomas,a librarian at the Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University from 1956 until his retirement in 1983, died in June at the age of 64. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Thomas received a B.S. from the Cornell College of Agriculture in 1955, and an MLS from Syracuse University in 1956. After his retirement, Thomas volunteered as a librarian at the Paleontological Research Institute. ■
