ALCTS Executive votes on new bylaws

The Executive Board of the Association for Library Col- lections and Technical Ser- vices (ALCTS) voted during its final session at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans to submit new by- laws to the membership for a vote in September. The proposed bylaws would completely reorganize the Association, eliminating the present sections and creating divisionwide interest groups and forums. These bylaws do not describe the organizational struc- ture proposed in the May 19th “Report of the ALCTS Organizational Structure Task Force,” but an alternative structure devised during the final days of the conference.

The Executive Boards of the Preservation of Library Materials Section (PLMS) and the Reproduction of Library Materials Section (RLMS) expressed serious concerns about this latest proposal and the haste with which the bylaws were submitted for ALCTS Executive Board vote. In a joint resolution which called for full discussion of the changes to the bylaws at Midwinter 1994, prior to a membership vote, PLMS and RLMS informed the ALCTS Executive Board of their intention to “explore opportunities for aligning themselves with other units within the American Library Association.”

ARL SPEC Kit profiles book repair programs

An Office of Management Services (OMS) of the Association of Research Libraries’ (ARL) recent SPEC kit is titled The Changing Role of Book Repair in ARL Libraries. It describes 24 book repair programs, covering their historical development, current activities, and specific conservation techniques. The descriptions were originally prepared to accompany samples of book repair treatments displayed at the June 1992 Annual Meeting of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) in Buffalo, New York. Randy Silverman and Maria Grandinette, of the AIC Book and Paper Group, organized the display session and compiled the SPEC kit. Portions of these materials were published simultaneously in the Book and Paper Group Annual.

SPEC kits are primarily available by subscription, but individual issues may be purchased from ARL. For more information, contact Gloria Haws, Sales Manager, ARL, 21 Dupont Circle, NW, Washington, D.C. 20036; (202) 296-8656.
