Pam Spiegel
Mary Russell Bucknum,associate director/head librarian for the archives of traditional music at Indiana University-Bloomington, has been awarded the 1996–97 Herbert F. and Virginia White Professional Development Award by the Indiana University Libraries. The award of $2,500 will enable Bucknum to begin compiling a comprehensive bibliography for scholars and students of ethnomusicology in an expanded edition of the 1992 publication Ethnomusicology Research: A Select Annotated Bibliography.
Linda Di Biase,collection development librarian at the University of Washington, has been elected executive director of the Pacific North-west Canadian Studies Consortium (PNWCSC), which is comprised of 20 colleges and universities in Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington and engages in a variety of ventures relating to Canadian studies. Di Biase has been on the PNWCSC since 1989 as library representative and has taken the lead on many cooperative activities.
Deborah Grimes,director of library services at Shelton State Community College, has been awarded a $250 research grant from the Alabama Library Association’s College, University, and Special Libraries Division. The grant will help offset the costs of publishing Centrality and the Academic Library with ACRL.
Sharon J. Rogers
Sharon J. Rogers,associate vice-president for academic affairs at George Washington University (GWU), has been elected chair of the OCLC Board of Trustees. Rogers has previously served at GWU as assistant vice-president for academic affairs and university librarian at the Gelman Library. She was assistant, then associate dean of the Bowling Green State University Libraries, and coordinator of the Library Programs Division at the University of Toledo.
James A. Ruffner,reference librarian and head of collection development at Wayne State University’s (WSU) Science and Engineering Library, was recently presented with the 1996 G. Flint Purdy Memorial Award. Ruffner, who has been with WSU for 32 years and joined the library system in 1978, was honored for his commitment to excellent service and his outstanding management of the University Libraries’ collections. He is known as a generous mentor who is always willing to share his knowledge.
Elizabeth Vernon,Judaica technical services librarian in the Judaica Division of Harvard University’s Widener Library, has been chosen to receive the 1995–96 Carol Ishimoto Award for Distinguished Service in the College Library, which includes a $1,000 stipend. Nancy Cline, Roy E. Larsen librarian of Harvard College, said, “Elizabeth has produced a very useful analysis of the Widener collections that have been moved to the Harvard Depository. Her work will be an asset to our ongoing review of the complex relationships that exist within our library collections.”
Nancy Whitten Zinn,head of special collections emerita at the University of California, San Francisco, received the Northern California and Nevada Medical Library Group Award for Professional Excellence. She was recognized for her work in the history of health sciences, including leadership roles in the collection and development of health-related oral history and archives.
Appointments
Joel Clemmer,library director of the DeWitt Wallace Library at Macalester College, has been appointed vice-president for library and information services at Macalester. He will manage the library, media services, academic and administrative computing, networking, and telecommunications. Clemmer joined Macalester College in 1985 after serving in various positions at Bucknell and Susquehanna Universities.

Dana C. Rooks
Dana C. Rookshas been named dean of libraries at the University of Houston (UH). Rooks has been assistant director for administration at UH since 1983 and served as coprincipal investigator for the TexShare Project from 1994 to 1996. She also served as acting director of libraries for six months in 1995, as library personnel coordinator, as coordinator of library instruction, and as business/economics reference librarian. Before joining UH, Rooks served at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and at the University of Oklahoma. She is currently a member of ALA’s Nominating Committee and the Texas Library Association’s Leadership Development Committee.
Gary B. Thompson
Gary B. Thompsonis the new director of library/audiovisual resources at Siena College in
Loudonville, New York. Thompson has previously served as head of information services at Cleveland State University, assistant librarian for public services at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and head reference librarian at Ohio Northern University. A member of ALA, Phi Beta Kappa, and the American Society of Indexers, Thompson has been a reviewer for Choice since 1978. He has served on the Choice and C&RL News editorial boards, and will chair the C&RL News board beginning this June.
Charlene Hoffman Shults,humanities librarian and assistant professor at Rutgers University, has been named associate librarian and director of libraries at Ripon College. Before joining Rutgers, Shults served as reference librarian and bibliographer at the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa.

Ellen I. Watsonhas been appointed dean of library services and associate vice-president for information services at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She previously served as associate provost for information resources and technology at Bradley University and recently authored “Merging Professions, Merging Administrative Units and Emerging Technologies” for the book Human Re-
source Management for the XXIst Century(ALA Editions, forthcoming).

Liz Bibbyis now head of reference and instructional services at Boston College.
Polly Boruffhas been appointed business reference librarian at Old Dominion University.

Retirements
Bill McClellanrecently retired after more than 30 years of service as music librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Joan McConkeyrecently retired as associate director for administrative services at the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries.
Bernice MacDonaldrecently retired from the New York Public Library after a 44-year career, the last 20 years as deputy director of the branch libraries and the last six months as acting director. MacDonald joined NYPL in 1952 first working with the Bronx Bookmobile and later with the Reader’s Advisory Service. She also served as coordinator of adult services where she established a number of programs including the Early Childhood Project and the Connecting Libraries and Schools Project.
Deaths
Richard Henry Lodgson,professor of library science at Queens College from 1971 until his retirement in 1974, died in February at the age of 84. Lodgson also served as associate director of libraries at Columbia University from 1947 to 1953, director of libraries at Columbia from 1953 to 1969, and dean of university libraries at the City University of New York from 1969 to 1971. He also served at Alamosa State Teachers College, Madison College, the University of Kentucky, the U.S. Office of Education, and the U.S. Veterans Administration Library. A member of ALA, Lodgson also served as director and chairman of the Association of Research Libraries (1962–65) and president of the New York State Library Association (1965).
Gary Meadors,cataloging librarian at the University of Texas at Austin, died in December. He had joined the General Libraries in 1988. ■
