Ann-Christe Galloway

Pat Farthing, coordinator of the Instructional Materials Center at Appalachian State University (ASU), is the recipient of one of six Univer- sity of North Carolina Board of Governors’ Excellence in Teaching Awards. Farthing works closely with the Reich College of Edu- cation at ASU, collaborating with classroom instructors to develop the library component. In the last few years, she has worked hard to add an active learning component to all of her classes; she teaches more than 70 classes each year. Farthing has been a li- brarian at ASU for 30 years, where she is also a member of the reference and in- struction team.

Christopher A. (Cal) Lee

Christopher A. (Cal) Lee is the first recipi- ent of the Coalition for Networked Information’s (CNI) Paul Evan Peters Fellowship for gradu- ate study in the information sciences or librarianship. Lee is cur- rently in the doctoral program at the Univer- sity of Michigan's (UM) School of Information, having completed his master’s degree at Michi- gan in 1999. His area of interest is electronic record keeping and pres- ervation. He has already made contributions to the field of digital preservation as a research assistant for the CAMiLEON Project, a joint effort of UM and Leeds University in England.

Diane Schmidt, biology librarian at the University of Illinois Library in Urbana- Champaign, has coauthored the third edition of Using the Biological Literature: A Practical Guide (New York: Marcel Dekker, 2002). The book is an annotated bibliographic guide to important reference sources in the biological sciences, from anatomy to zoology. Priscilla Yu, city planning and landscape architecture librarian at the University of Illinois Library in Urbana-Champaign, has published “Leaning to One Side: The Im- pact of the Cold War on Chinese Library Collections,” a chapter in Books, Libraries, Reading and Publishing in the Cold War (Washington, D.C.: Center for the Book, Library of Congress, 2002).

Appointments

Linda Marie Golian-Lui

Linda Marie GolianLui has been named university librarian at the University of Ha- waii-Hilo’s Edwin H. Mookini Library and Graphic Services. Prior to this position she was a founding faculty member and the reference team leader/education liaison librarian for Florida Gulf Coast Uni- versity in Ft. Myers, Florida. Golian-Lui is a 2001 graduate of the ACRL/Harvard Lead- ership Institute.

Ruth Jackson is now university librarian at the University of California Riverside. Jackson’s expertise is in long-term planning, finding innovative uses for technology, forging partnerships both within and outside the campus, and raising support for the libraries she’s headed at universities in Kansas and West Virginia. Among her goals are hiring additional staff in key areas such as information technology, developing a fundraising system, enhancing the collection, and developing a strategic plan. Jackson has rep- resented libraries at the Governor’s Conference on Libraries and Infor- mation Service in Rich- mond, Virginia, and at the White House Con- ference on Libraries and Information Ser- vice in Washington, D.C. In 1992, she was a member of the Re- search Librarian's delegation to Russia, the Ukraine, and Hungary.

Ruth Jackson

Joanne A. Schneider

Joanne A. Schneider has been named direc- tor of library and information services at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. She was previously assistant college librarian for budgets and collections at Middlebury College. She was collection man- agement librarian at Middlebury from 1981 to 1999 and reference/cata- log librarian for a year be- fore that. Her earlier po- sitions included branch head in the Jefferson- Madison Regional Library System in Charlottesville, Virginia; work in two Tibetan refugee libraries in Dharmasala and Mundgod, India; and reference librarian for the Federal Deposit Insurance Cor- poration in Washington, D.C. She was coedi- tor of Collection Development in College Libraries (ALA 1991), which contained her chapter on “Preservation Organization and Practice in College Libraries.”

Donald Dean Smeeton is now the director of the Pentecostal Resource Center at Lee University.

Paid Atwood has joined the staff at the University of California-Berkeley’s Water Resources Center Archives as the new technical services librarian.

R. Wayne Bivens-Tatum has been named general and humanities reference librarian at Princeton University.

Daniel Boomhower is now assistant music librarian at the Mendel Music Library at Princeton University.

Susan Boyd has been appointed reference librarian/engineering subject specialist at Santa Clara University.

JohnJ. Burke is now the assistant director of the regional campus library at the Middletown campus of Miami University in Ohio.

Antonio Calvo has joined the reference and instructional services department at California State University-Northridge as the fine arts and performing arts librarian.

Jim Church has been named international documents librarian at the University of California, Berkeley.

Rita Evans is now the reference librarian and head of reference services at the University of California-Berkeley’s Institute of Transportation Studies Library.

Janelle Hedstrom is now an information literacy librarian at the University of Texas- Austin’s Library Instruction and Information Literacy Services.

Ryan Hildebrand has been appointed special collections and archives cataloger at the University of California-Irvine.

Adrian N. (A.J.) Johnson is now an information literacy librarian at the University of Texas-Austin’s Library Instruction and Information Literacy Services.

Elizabeth Knight has been appointed science librarian for physical and environmental sciences at the University of Puget Sound Library.

Wallace Koehler has been named director of the master of library and information science program at Valdosta State University.

June Lembo is now science librarian for biological and health sciences at the University of Puget Sound Library.

Anne Liebst has been appointed assistant director for technical services at Washburn University-Topeka.

Dan Linke has been promoted to university archivist and curator of public policy papers at the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library at Princeton University.

Laura Kane McEIfresh is now electronic resources cataloger for the General Libraries of Emory University.

Karen Munro has been appointed literature librarian at the University of Oregon Libraries-Eugene.

Michele Os trow is now head of library instruction and information literacy services at the University of Texas-Austin General Libraries.

Carol Ou has been appointed electronic resources cataloger for the General Libraries of Emory University.

Marina Pereira has joined the reference department faculty at the Edith Garland Dupré Library at the University of Louisiana- Lafayette.

Loring Prest has been promoted to the rank of assistant professor at California University of Pennsylvania, where he is electronic resources librarian and library Webmaster.

Ben Primer has been promoted to the position of associate university librarian for rare books and special collections at Princeton University.

Nancy Shader has been appointed assistant archivist for public services at the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library at Princeton University.

Karen A. Weaver is now curatorial assistant for the department of printed books and bindings at the Pierpoint Morgan Library in New York.

Kimberly Whalen has been appointed business librarian for the Goizueta Business Library of Emory University.

Tom Wilson is now director of information technology at the University of Maryland- College Park Libraries.

Julie Planchon Wolf has been appointed reference and instruction/nursing librarian at the University of Washington Libraries at the Cascadia Community College and University of Washington, Bothell Collocated Campus.

Dana Wright has joined the library at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign as the assistant undergraduate librarian for diversity services.

Ann Zeidman-Karpinksi has been named science and technology services librarian at the University of Oregon Libraries-Eugene.

Retirements

Martha Alexander

Martha Alexander, director of libraries at the University of Missouri-Columbia since 1990, has retired. Her previous positions include university librarian at the University of Louisville (1983-90), associate university librarian (1978-82) and assistant university librarian for technical services (1975-78) at George Washington University, and several positions at the University of Maryland from 1969 to 1974. Alexander is a member of ACRL, the American Association for Higher Education, and the Missouri Library Association. In 1991, Alexander gave testi- mony before the U.S. House Committee on Education and Labor regarding the Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.

Deaths

Rosalee McReynolds

Rosalee McReynolds, 51, special collections librarian at Loyola University-New Orleans, died on August 21. McReynolds joined the library faculty in June 1980 as serials librarian. She held that position until 1998, when she became Loyola’s first special collections li- brarian. She was an ac- tive researcher and writer and, at the time of her death, was work- ing on a book about Philip and Mary Jane Keeney, librarians who lost jobs because of unpopular political views. McReynolds was a founding member and past president of the Louisiana chapter of ACRL and a winner of ALA’s Justin Winsor Prize for excellence in library history research. ■
