ACRL programs and meetings in Miami Beach: Special conference pull-out
The Sections and Committees of ACRL working in concert and representing the diverse interests of the 11,000 members of ACRL have assembled the following multipart program. Thanks to the strong cooperative efforts of ACRL sections and committees, fourteen program sessions are being presented. Most are jointly sponsored by two or more groups.
The program focuses on:
■ The development and use of international electronic networks as a mechanism for information access.
■ Personal networking as a professional development activity to learn of developments in the larger society.
■ Intra-professional networking to communicate the vital concerns of one segment to other segments of the profession.
These points of focus are critical to the advancement of the profession and to the improvement of customer service in academic and research libraries.

Binding Together a Multicultural Society: Challenges for the Academy
ACRL Afro-American Studies Librarians, Arts, and Law and Political Science Sections
Saturday, June 25: 2.00- 4.00p.m.
It once was assumed that immigrants to the United States would become part of the “melting pot,” adapting to an Anglo-American culture. This assumption has clearly been challenged by the demands that we both recognize and recast ourselves as a multicultural society. The result has been an ongoing debate on multiculturalism and what it means to be an American. Dr. Sheldon Hackney, chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, will address the issues informing this debate. A panel of reactors will respond.
