Texas A&M University Medical SciencesLibrary (TAMU) and the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences (UNTLIS) have received a $401,668 IMLS grant to train health sciences librarians. The funds will be used to pilot a recruitment and teaching model program to recruit students into health sciences librarianship, support lifelong learning in the profession, and train librarians for the challenges of the 21st-century electronic environment.

Rutgers University Libraries and the NewJersey State Library have been awarded a grant of $460,000 from IMLS to create the New Jersey Digital Highway (www.njdigitalhighway. org), a Web site that will contain digitized historical and cultural heritage materials. Some of the items include books, diaries, letters and legal documents, and moving and still images. Institutions can recommend collections in a survey posted on the Web site. The inaugural theme, to be built by contributions from many institutions, is “The Changing Face of New Jersey: The Immigration Experience from Earliest Times to the Present.” The Rutgers University Libraries is building the technical framework to support the digital highway project.

The Alliance LibrarySystem, in partnershipwith Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS), has been awarded a $435,456 grant from IMLS to recruit library students in Illinois. The grant is part of a $10 million national initiative to offset a critical shortage of librarians due to retirements in the next few years. This grant will help to recruit and mentor 31 graduate library students in rural Illinois. Upon graduation, these students will work in rural schools and public, academic, and special interest libraries serving citizens of underserved rural areas. A total of 27 grants were awarded to recruit 558 individuals at the doctoral, master’s, and paraprofessional levels. Dominican University’s GSLIS was the only graduate library program in Illinois to receive a grant.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University'sPrescott Campus Library was awarded a grant for $496,750 by the United States Department of Education for the Academic and Technical Literature Congressional Award. The library will select, purchase, catalog, and organize academic and technical literature that strengthens the academic degree programs and augments the specialized cuniculum in aeronautical sciences, aerospace engineering, aviation safety, global security and intelligence studies, meteorology, and associated degrees. The literature will be in a variety of formats, including print, electronic, microform, and video. The main focus of the acquisitions will be technical publications from industry, NASA, the National Technical Infonnation Services, and from academic organizations.

The University of Rochester River CampusLibraries has received a $103,500 federal grant for further development of DSpace, an electronic repository that collects, stores, and shares scholarly work. The River Campus Libraries is using die grant to research “grey literature,” such as conference proceedings, academic theses, and technical standards and those who use it. Many of these works from government, academic, business, and industry sources in print and electronic foimats are not distributed by commercial publishers.

The Conservation Center for Art andHistoric Artifacts has received a $300,000challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). This grant will launch a campaign to establish a $1.2 million endowment dedicated to supporting education and outreach services at the center. When fully funded, income from the endowment will allow the center to expandits preservation assessment survey program, disaster assistance services, and educational programs. These seivices aid the nation’s museums, l ibraries, archives, and historical societies in ensuring the long-term stability of their collections, and preserving and protecting the vital humanities collections that define the national and cultural heritage. The Conservation Center has received another NEH grant for $402,000 in support of its preservationservices activities. Additional support of up to $80,000 in matching funds is conditional upon raising an equal amount of eligible gifts. The grant supports conducting preservation planning programs to assist libraries, archives, museums, educational institutions, and historical organizations in safekeeping their collections; offering workshops and conferences, including a three-day workshop series on the unique preservation needs of special format items such as audiotapes and videotapes; andprovidingongoingtechnical support to institutions and the public through disaster assistance, informationandreference services, Web site enhancements, and the on-site library.

Former U.S. Congresswoman ConstanceA. Morelia has donated papers to the University of Maryland Libraries-College Park. ARepublican from the Eighth District, Montgomery County, Maryland, who served eight terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Morelia lost her bid for reelection in November 2002. She is now U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris. Before her election to Congress, Morelia served for eight years in the Maryland House of Delegates. Included in the Morelia Papers are plaques, photographs, press releases, correspondence, andsubjectresearch files on a local and national scale. In addition, there are files compiled during her work as a member of the House Science Committee, research relating to her role as the cochair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, information on localinterest issues, and a host of other topics.

Constance A. Morelia

Harvey Mudd College (HMC), inClaremont, California, has begun transferring thousands of rare copies of mathematics journals to the National University of Colombia in Medellin as part of a program to further the study of higher mathematics in third-world nations. The journals are in 110 boxes, each weighing between 30 and 50 pounds, and will be sent by ship to Colombia. The magazines, which were left over after a consolidation of library facilities at the Claremont Colleges, are being delivered to Colombia through a program of the American Mathematical Society, which is paying for the shipping. The journals cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to acquire over the years. HMC is also giving away a large number of duplicate mathematics books to members of the college community. Elizabeth Millan, a senior mathematics major at HMC, is responsible for starting the donation process, and she personally spent a week boxing the journals for shipping. “When I heard that we had all these mathematics journals that had no permanent home and were in danger of being thrown out, I was heartbroken, ” she said. Alfonson Castro, who will be chair of the HMC mathematics department nextyear, informed his alma mater, the National University of Colombia, of the availability of the journals. Through this donation, and other smaller donations and trades, HMC has been able to clear out 80 to 90 percent of its excess mathematics journals.

The Getty Research Institute has acquiredthe Stephen White Gallery of Photography Records (1943-2000). Rich in recorded contracts with other dealers, collectors, and institutions; promotional materials; financial documents; correspondence; and records of the gallery’s own exhibitions, tire archive provides a comprehensive source of infonnation on the development of tire photography market in Los Angeles and in general. The materials document the growth of the gallery into one of the leaders in tire field of photography, owing to White’s passion for photography as a collector and dealer during a period of increasing interest in photographs as collectible art. ■
