Appointments

Gale S. Etschmaier has been named dean of university libraries at Florida State University. Etschmaier had served as the dean of library and information access at San Diego State University since 2011. Prior to her tenure at San Diego State, Etschmaier spent a decade as associate university librarian for public service at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. During that time, she held interim appointments as the acting associate university librarian for collection development and acting associate university librarian for library information technology. Etschmaier also served as head of George Washington’s Document Delivery Services Department (1995–2000).

Carl Grant, former associate dean for knowledge services and chief technology officer at University of Oklahoma (OU) Libraries, was named interim dean of libraries. Prior to joining OU in 2013, Grant worked as an independent consultant and executive adviser to the dean at Virginia Tech University Libraries. Prior to that appointment, he was chief librarian and president of Ex Libris North America. Grant previously served as president, vice-president, or chief operating officer of several other library automation suppliers, during which time he was responsible for international sales offices around the world. He is active in ACRL, the Library and Information Technology Association, the Coalition of Networked Information, and the National Information Standards Organization.

Neelam Bharti has been named library liaison for the Chemistry department at the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries.

Alaina Bull has been appointed first year experience librarian at the University of Washington-Tacoma.

Delaney Bullinger has joined the Auburn University Libraries as reference/instruction librarian.

William Claspy has been appointed head of special collections and archives at the Kelvin Smith Library of Case Western Reserve University.

Kristina Clement has been appointed student success librarian at the University of Wyoming Libraries.

Suzanna Conrad has been appointed associate dean for digital technologies and resource management at the University Library of California State University-Sacramento.

Samantha Cook has been appointed instructional design librarian at the University of Wyoming Libraries.

John T. Furlong has been named associate university librarian for the Research and Academic Collaboration Services Division at Washington University Libraries.

Alexandrea Glenn has joined the Blough-Weis Library at Susquehanna University as a research and instruction librarian and assistant professor.

Michelle Green has been appointed learning and engagement librarian at the University of Wyoming Libraries.

Tyler Martindale has joined the Auburn University Libraries as business and economics reference librarian.

Marisa Petrich has been named instructional design librarian at the University of Washington-Tacoma

D. J. Reece has been appointed special collections librarian at the University of Arkansas-Monticello’s Taylor Library.

Kevin Seeber has been named education and outreach services department head at the University of Colorado-Denver’s Auraria Library.

Cody Taylor is now the open education coordinator for the University of Oklahoma Libraries.

Robert Taylor has joined the faculty of Valdosta State University Odum Library in Valdosta, Georgia, as assistant professor and acquisitions/cataloging librarian.

Jen Waller has been named director of Open Initiatives and Scholarly Communication at the University of Oklahoma Libraries.

Deaths

Patricia Senn Breivik, retired dean of the San Jose State University Library, has died. Breivik’s 38 years in higher education included the positions of dean of university libraries at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; associate vice-president for information resources at Towson State University in Towson, Maryland; director of the Auraria Library and professor at the University of Colorado-Denver; and dean of library services and associate professor at Sangamon State University in Springfield, Illinois. Breivik’s last academic post was as dean of the San Jose State University Library, where in collaboration with the San Jose Public Library, The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library (a combined academic/city library) was created to meet the lifelong learning needs of the community.

Among other associations, she served as chair of the National Forum on Information Literacy. She was an elected member of the American Association for Higher Education Board, and she was ACRL president (1995–96).

She received the American Council on Education Fellows Programs in Academic Administration Service Award, the Columbia University School of Library Service Distinguished Alumni Award, and the ACRL Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award.

Her many book publications include Information Literacy: Revolution in the Library, Student Learning in the Information Age, and Information Literacy: Educating Children for the 21st Century. She also wrote more than 40 periodical articles and book chapters. In addition to scores of speaking engagements in the United States, Breivik was a sought-after speaker throughout the world, including Ireland, Mexico, Iceland, Germany, Finland, Australia, and Puerto Rico.

After her retirement in 2005, Breivik moved to Columbia, South Carolina, to live near her family and to serve as vice-president of her son’s company, Nehemiah Communications.
