This month’s cover features the “Mouth of the Willamette River, Oregon” from The West Shore: An Illustrated Western Magazine. From 1887, the image features a view from the hills northwest of present-day Portland looking downriver and includes the pre-eruption Mount St. Helens and, in the distance, Mt. Adams.

The West Shore was a literary magazine that was “devoted to the development of the Great West” and published in Portland in the late 1800s. It was famous for its wood engravings and lithography.
