Vol 71, No 2 (2010)

Cover Page
This month’s cover shows an illustration from an 18th century copy of Dala ’il al-khayrat wa-shawariq al-anwar fi dhikr al-salah calá al-Nabi al-mukhtar, a book of prayers and devotions for the Prophet Muhammad composed by al-Jazuli (d.1465). The illuminated illustration provides a stylistic depiction of the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, a common motif in copies of Dala’il al-khayrat. The high dome in the far corner of the mosque sits above the Prophet’s living quarters and tomb.

The manuscript, from the personal collection of Sultan Abdülhamid of Turkey, is one of more than 1,200 Islamic manuscripts held by the Special Collections Library at the University of Michigan. The manuscripts will be cataloged, digitized, and made available on the Web in a “Cataloging Hidden Collections and Archives” project.
