The cover illustration is a detail from Crossing the Line from A picturesque voyage to India: By the way of China, by Thomas Daniell, B.A., and William Daniell, A.R.A (London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme [etc.], 1810), which is held in the Mystic Seaport Rare Book Collection (call number 915 D18 Oversize, G.W. Blunt White Library), Mystic, Connecticut. The picture details the initiation of crew members aboard ship who are crossing the equator for the first time. They go through a number of initiation rites doled out by King Neptune, his Queen, Amphitrite, and other members of his “court,” all veteran seamen dressed up in costumes made from materials gathered aboard ship (mop heads, etc.). The G. W. Blunt White Library at Mystic Seaport is a research library specializing in American maritime history.
