This month’s cover features the dust jacket from Lá agus Oidhche (Day and Night) (1929), a book of short stories by Mícheál Mac Liammóir from the Irish Collection of the John J. Burns Library at Boston College. Liammóir, who is also credited for the book’s cover art, is best known as an actor and director who cofounded the Gate Theatre in Dublin in 1928 and An Taibhdhearc, the Irish language theatre in Galway. The book is part of an online exhibit titled “Free State Art: Judging Ireland by its Book Covers,” which features dust jackets of works published by An Gúm, the publications branch of the Department of Education under the Irish Free State. The exhibit is available online at www.bc.edu/libraries/centers/burns/exhibits/virtual/bkcovers/.
