Vol 81, No 3 (2020)

Cover Page

This month’s cover features a photograph of Philadelphia Dance Academy students Toni Lowe (left) and Marianne Danenbaum perform choreography from a Labanotation score, circa 1966. Labanotation, a dance notation system developed in the 1920s by Rudolf Laban, was widely used before video made documenting dance and movement much easier. Nadia Chilkovsky Nahumck, founder of the Philadelphia Dance Academy, made Labanotation part of the academy’s curriculum and helped pioneer Labanotation in American dance education.

The Philadelphia Dance Academy is now the University of the Arts’ (UA) School of Dance. View this and other archival images from the UA University Libraries and Archives at https://library.uarts.edu/dc/photohist.html.
