The cover illustration is a watercolor and gouache painting of a street corner in San Francisco's China Town, circa 1890. The painting by American artist Robert Blum is part of the Robert B. Honeyman, Jr. Collection of Early Californian and Western American Pictorial Material held in the Bancroft Library at the University of California-Berkeley. A busy street corner lined with three-story buildings with elaborately carved cornices and balconies and facades decorated with paper lanterns and flowers is depicted. The figures in the painting wear traditional dress.
