The Woodlands in Winter (Watercolor) is an 1830 painting by artist David Johnson Kennedy, owned by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP). William Hamilton oversaw the extensive renovations to this West Philadelphia 18thcentury mansion house from 1788 until his death in 1813. Since the 19th century, the mansion has been located within the grounds of a landscaped cemetery with distinctive grave markers. Founded in 1824 the HSP is one of the oldest historical societies in the United States, housing more than 500,000 books, 300,000 graphic works, and 15 million manuscript items. It is one of the largest family history libraries in the nation and has extensive 17th-, 18th-, and 19th- century manuscripts holdings.
