This color woodcut illustration entitled "Steep Ravine Beach," featuring the California state flower, the poppy, depicts a coastal scene just north of San Francisco in Marin County. It is from the book Walls: A Journey across Three Continents by Tom Killion (Santa Cruz: Quail Press, 1990). Killion is a Santa Cruz artist whose woodcuts illustrate his own writings and those of California poet and printer William Everson. Killion is also the proprietor of Quail Press where he prints limited edition books and fine art prints. This volume is one of more than 4,000 in the Fine Press Collection at the Special Collections Department, F. W. Olin Library at Mills College in Oakland, California. This collection reflects the rich San Francisco Bay Area literary traditions which proliferated with the gold rush and endure today.
